AUTHORS: Levichl I.A. !54 68-58--5-9/25 TITLE: An Improvement in the Method of Preparing Freshlj Dissolved Arsenic Before its Feeding into the Operating Solution ( Usovershenstvovaniye sposoba podgotovki svezherastvor- ennogo myshlyaka pered podachey yego v rabochiy rastvor) PERIODICAL: Koks i Khimiya, 1958, Nr 5, PP 31 - 35 (USSR). ABSTRACT: In 1956, the stability of the arsenical complex in the solution purifying coke oven gas from hydrogen sulphide was unstable; it was decomposing with the precipitation of arsenic sulphide. A supply of freshly dissolved arsenic to the plant had no substantial influence on increasing its concentration in the purifying solution. An increase of pH to 8 - 8.2 of the freshly prepared arsenical solution had no benefisial JLnfluence on the stability of the complex. The negative results were also obtained on transferring sodium arsenite into tri-compciand of trivalent arsenic by preliminary saturation of --,ha Irre6h solution with hydrogen sulphide (from coke oven gas). In the ilreRh solution this trisalt is stable but on contact with the operating reagent It is easily transformed into oxythioarseni2al salt which is easily decomposed. It was found that in order tQ inorease the stability of arsenic in the operating solution the fresh Cardl/2 solution should be preliminarily traDsforiied into pentavalent 68-58-5-9/25 An Improvement in the Method of PreparinE Rreshly D-Assclved Ar5enic Before its Feeding into the Operating Solution arsenic. This can easily be obtained by saturating the sal-11- with hydrogen Bulphide and subsequent oxidation with air. if these operations are performed outside the working cy^:e, stable compounds are formed which do not decompcse on entering,- the operating solution. It is pointed out that the preparation c-f the arsenical solution should be carried out on a installation. TITLE: Characteristics of the Size D'-3tzibution of Coke PERIODTCAL: Koks I khiraiya, 1959, Nr 10, pp 27-30 (USSR) ABSTRACT: In view of the variability of the size distribution of coke which could not be explained by the ooking technology, the accuracy of the-detemination of the size distribution of coke using mechanised screens with square ma6h was investigated. It wac established that due to the pr.' 'smatio, structure of coke,k,; s:areening on square nuosh screens does no-41 give a correct picture of the size distribution of --oke- About- 15)'o' of lumps from the fraction 60-80mm finds i-cs way into the 60-40mm fraction. This value Is not constant and depends on ths structure of the coke. in parallel ~ererminations of the size distribution of coke, deviations it. the +40mm fraction amount to 2.5c.; while the resul-ts ror the -.!Omm fraction were more accurate. in large coke sizes about 33c'~ of all lumps possess the coefficient of "columnarity" (ratio of height to width) of 1.1-1.3 and 335, of 1.3-1.5. There are 4 figures and 4 tables. ASSOCIATION: Zaporo--Iiokiy koksolchimicheskiy zavod (Zaporozzh'~-a Cok1ng Works: cafd ll/--' 1MLLIMA-119 A.Ye.; YL"-;-AIYq F.Z.; j3UTUI"OV, F.D. The rollers are made from steel R9, RIO, or from the alloyed steel KhVG. The roller is held in a special holder. The pipe is fastened by a pneumatic clamp chuck. The speed of cutting is 160 m/min. The new method increases the productivity 2.5 times. Losses of material have been cull; in every ton of cut pipes, 215 kg of metal are saved. There are 3 diagrams. 1. Cutting tools - Performnes, 2. For obtaining the highest resolving power it is necessary to arrange that the concentration of the activator increases steadily with the height of the crystal and from the centre line to the outside. The scintillating efficiency should rise to compensate for the distance of the scintillating region from the photocathode. Pfann (Trans. Amer. Inst. Mining Met. Eng., Vol. 194, 747, 1952) first solved the problem of the distribution of the impurities in the controlled crystallisation at a constant rate with the assumption of complete mixing in the liquid phase and no diffusion in the solid phase. A number of exper-'ments showed the relation Card IL/4 84123 S/07o/6o/oO5/005/016/017 E132/E36o The Influence of the Crystallisation Conditions on the Distribution of Thallium in Single Crystals of Sodium Iodide obtained to be a satisfactory representation of the situations observed. The coefficient of diffusion in the solid crystal is in fact negligible. The transport of material. in the liquid phase takes place by diffusion and by convection mixing. As the coefficieryt; of diffusion of impurities in the liquid is small, (10 _5 to 10-4 CM2 /sec-1) the correspondence of Pfann's equation with reality must be due to the presence of convective mixing in the liquid phase. In the methods of controlled crystallisation due to Obreimov-Shubnikov and to Stockt:6,xrger, there is a tempera- ture gradient which is positive upwards and convection can take place only if the isothermal surface of the liquid (the crystal- lisation surface) is curved. The present experiments are studies of the distribution of impurities (TI) in NaI crystals grown under different conditions of impurity transport in the liquid phase. Diaphragms are used to control the temperature gradient. The rapid growth conditions used result in the sharp increase in the concentration of gas-Aike J,mpurltlo8 dissolved in the Card 2/4 8023 S/070/60/005/005/010/017 B132/E36o The Influence of the Crystallisation Conditions on the DistriL-tttion of Thallium in Single Crystals of Sodium Iodide liquid immediately in front of the surface of crystallisation. As a result of the increase in their solubili.ty limit :in the liquid phase, intense separation of the gas phase takes place at all interfaces. The observed distribution of the activator along the axis of the crystal for the case of convex isothermal surfaces is plotted. The distribution of activator across the crystal has been measured for various growth conditions and good agreement with the theoretical distribution is obtained. The concentration at the outside of the crystal can be made up to 50% greater than that at the axis by choosing the proper conditi.ons and this is the situation desirable for scintillator crystals. A theoretical investigation of the distribution of the coefficient of light-collection, showed that optimum resolving power can be achieved by irregular dietri- bution of the activator along the cyrstal; thereby the decrease in light collection is compensated by increasing scintillation ef- ficiency; (Ref. 6: L.S. Kukushkinq A.M. Ratner, ZhTF, 28p 345, 11W (Ref. 7: ZhTF9 289 1121p 1958). The present study experimentally confirmed the above conclusion. The spread of the light output along z Tlas low- est for crystals with a thallium content of 0-15-0-18 %. Thust unpolished cf&tal-sur- faces lead to a greater spread of light output than polished sur- faces. Hence the optimum activator-concentration ought to be grea- ter in crystals with unpolished surfaces than in polished ones. As the growing of the single-crystals involves high-temperature annea- ling, the influence of the latter was investigated. It was found that the annealing (at 63o-64000) led to a decrease in the reeolv- ing power (by 4 - 5 %). It is concluded that optimum scintillation -efficiency can be achieved by growing the single crystals by StockUrger's method. ABSTPvNCT: The author attempts to obtain a quantitative estimate for the system of small-angle boundaries, which are used in metallography but have not yet been employed for the analysis of single crystals, and presents certain results obtained with the aid of this method in an investigation of the morphology of the sub-boundaries in single crystals grown from the melt. The crystals were grown in the form of cylinders of diameter not smaller than 40 ffim by a method described earlier (in: Rost kristallov'i (Crystal Growth], Vol VI, p. 165, Nauka, 1965), which makes it possible to obtain a specified cross section of the growing ingot and to control the growth rate and the axial temperature gradient near the separatioft boundary between the solid and liquid phases. The tests ccnsisted of measuring the preferred orientation and the specifi. surface area of the small-angle dislocation sub-boundaries in the single crystals, both freshly grown and annealed near the melting point. The dislocation structure Card 1/2 ACC NR,' AE7005317 '.was obtained by etching and photography. The subboundary areas were calculated by an approximate method, used in metallography, which is briefly reviewed in the paper. In freshly grown crystals, the sub-boundaries form a linearly oriented syster surfaces with an orientation axis coinciding with the growth direction, regar"ess of the orystaUographic orientation of the primer. After hiSh-temperature annealing) realignment takes place in the crystal) causing the system of boundaries to become more isometric. The results indicate that the boundaries "inherited" by the growing crystal play an important role in the formation of its real structure. The author thanks M. V. Gladkikh for analyzing the boundaries ot the blocks in the single crys- tals, and 1. V. Smushkov for useful advice and a discussion of the results.
