170) AUTHOH: Glezer, V. D. SOIT/2()_1 26-5-56/69 TITLE: Cone Adaptation Viewed as a Illervous Procei3s (Kolbochkovaya adaptatsiya kak nervnyy protsess) PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 126, Nr 5, PP 1110-1113 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The imDortance of the nervous system for the darkness adaptation was pointed out in recent papers. A hypothesis was set up accord- ing to which the adaptive increase in sensitiv(iness to light is connected with the extension of the zoned of spatial summation (pros trans tve nnayp- eummatsiya) on the retina (Refs 1-3). Essential changes of the said sunmation in the coiws part or the curve of darkness adaptation could be proved by experiment. At the same time, the rod changes are very small (Ref 4)- Some authors think it possible to identify the summation zone with the receptive field which appears in electrophysiological teOtS (Ref 5)- There is much reason to assune that the zone of spatial summation really corresponds to the rod recepbi-~-3 field. As is known, the foveala cones have isolated nervous canals. It is also inevitable to assume that a cooperation of the conef, is possible in fields Card 1/3 which are analogous to the rod fields. In the present paper, the Cone Adaptation Viewed as a Nervous Process S07120-126-5---6169 .1 following hypothesis is supported by experimenr: the increase in sensitiveness to light in the process of' darknossadaptation must be connected with the extension of the rec-2ptive field, i.e. .7ith the increase in the number of cones, whi,~h converge toward a common nervous canal. At firsty tho magnitudoo of the foveala- cone-receptive fir3lds were determined in 12 test peroons under the conditions of darkness adaptation (after a stay of 30 minutes in the dark). In control invoBtigatiorto by trienno of artificial pupils, white fixation points and spactai:lo 1.,,Jasoea, it vas proved that neither the spherical, nor ti-e chromatic, nor the night myopia affect the determination of the receptive field. Figure I ahown a typical diagram obtaine(i in such a determimation (Rof 7). The author concludon from tho ri,oiilto Wint tho probabil- ity of such a complicated occurrence, as is the thre3hold excitation of a ganglicus cell, is determined by the numbE!r of quanta falling upon the receptive field, as troll as by 'the number of nervous elemento which, at a given point of time, converee to the granglious cell. At the moment, it is diiffiralt to Judge which mechanism is the basis for the dependence observed. lt can, however, be assiunpd: if' the photoreceptors are able to generate Card 2/3 spontaneous impulses (Ref 9), the incr()a;-.-,(! in tLe number of Cone Adaptation Viewed as a Nervous Process S07/20-126-5-56/69 receptors converging to the original cell must; lead to an accumulation of subthreshold excitation in this cell as Tell as to an increase in the excitability of the field as a whole. It can also be assumed that the spontaneoua eye motions play a certain part in this phenomenon. Uruler e):perim(?i1tn1 conditions, the changes of t%e foveala sensitivene8s to liCht in the range observed can be completely explained bit rof-.)rj~anizationo (perestroyki) of the iiorvouii otructui-e. Ttv~ ruIC-.i cibU4L~rv-~d (mlf= const) can be of interact to the bijildini- or cybernetic modelo of the nervous system. There are 3 fiJurO3, 1 table, and 10 reCerences, 5 of which are Soviet. Under oT)timurn conditions of vislial cbgervation, this tni-oughout, attains some dozens of binary information units per second (Ret% 1). r- their experiments, the'authors followed G. S, Sziklai's methods (Pefl. 1) except for brightness variations by neutral filters. The test persons were well trained in identifying eight standard objects (or"er of magnitude of 2 - 4 angular degrees) contrasting by approximately 80r,. These objects were shown to thein in random sequence. Two t3chniques were emplayedt a) surface impregnation, and b) vacuum impregnettlon.. Metallographic e.-caminations indicated -that the AW-0ared ferrous base had a non-homogeneous structure with irregulwr- port characteristics and pore size. The surface -imprognated bearings had their pore characteristics and self-lubricating properties modified. Performance tests wero undertaken with the following types of bearing: 1) standard, untreatedl 2) au. 1:'ace-impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene; and 3) vacuum impret:'natmd with polytetrafluoroethylene, with siraultaneous additkovi of lubricant. Performance tests indicate that iiurface-impregnate4i bearings c n be recommended for comparatively low sliding velottLies, v = 0.3 m/see at higher loads 50 kg/cm2; vacuumi-twipregnated Card 1/2 Z/032/63/0l3/0,:)3/00's/,oo6 Porous bearings impregnated with ... . ~ I E112/F,136 sintered bearings should be used for IIowor loads up to 30 'kg/ctn2 and preferably for higher temperaturest where other bearings or conventional lubricants would fail. TITLE: Study of the impurity distribution in the surfaco layer of n-type silicon photoolectric converter3 of solar enerEy P_ERIODICAL- Fizika tverdogo tela. v, 3, no. ~, 196.1, 2M-23812 TEYT: The authors describe a model of a silicon photoelectric converter with p-n junction, The junction was produced by thermal diffusion of boron into n-type stlicon. Prior to diffusion, the res4 stirity Q and the I Hall voltage -t;ere measured and the concentration a of the majority carriers was calculated. After the diffusion one side of -the specimen was complete- ly ground off, at the lateral faces the alloyed layer was left crily in the central part. The authors used lead- coated nickel contact3. The model is schematically sho-.-;n in FiEs. 11a and 1b. The measuremor-ts itere made under a heating lamp of the type 2r,-3 (M-3) with filtez correction of the spectrum according to a solar irradiation of an intensity of 78 mw,/cm2. To determine the electrical para:.-,eters in the surface layers, layers were etched off by means of KOH and the conductivity and the Hall voltaFe were Card 1/5 27291 S/18 1/6 1 /CiD31068102 11034 Study of the imrurity distribution B102/:-,202 measured before and after *he etchin,;z. From those meastiremercs mobility and concentration of the boron atoms in silicon could 'ne dete:rmined. The distribution of the boron atoms in the entire allowed layer vias determined by successive etchingg and measurements. The Plentrical para.-RF~terq of the silicon converter were studied as & function of the thiiknpsn of thj alloyed layer. The results are illustrat::jd in Fi,,, 4, The (HE3tuno(j x from I the surface of the specimen, mea~nired into the int,-rior of the spccimeri, was chosen as the common abscissa. As can be seen, no-load voltage Ux,-, increases v.,*ith an increase in x, also the short-circuit rurre:at IK-3, an (I the maximum power P,,Irc increase until EL certain depth ~13 reached (X - x ), On further approach to the p-n junction (which was at a on rn opt depth of about 11~k) these :-iantities aLain decreased. The crianee of the resistance r of' tne alloye. layer is illustrated by the dashed line. It t depths of the p-n junctior greater than x opt the resistance of the alloyed layer is relatively low Ev increases slowly with the approach to x. in 4 Ps 3~4.
