A13STRACT: Lead and zinc single crystals.were-prepared from the melt by the methods I
of Bridgman and Chalmers, and the equipment constructed for use in each method is
described. Technical-grade reagents containing no more than 0. 0% impurities were
employed. Zone refining, used twice, Increased the purity of the crystals by two orders
I of magnitude., Zinc and lead crystals ineasuring up to 85 mm in diameter and 250
mm long were thus obtained. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of
single crystal structure. The crystalswere cut Into plates by the electric spark method,
the apparatus for which Is described. The plates, cut parallel or at right angles to a
given crystallographic piane, were subjected to analysis by neutron. diffraction to

ABSTRACT; Fundamental methods are presented for determining the optimum
hydro-operating schedules for hydro plants and for power systems with
predominating hydro plants, for both cases of controlled and noncontrolled
runoffs. Principal power -economy peculiarities of operating such plants and
power systems are presented. Additional cost of labor, caused by variable
hydro-power production conditions is discussed in detail, methods are
presented for evaluating the power -production 6eficits under various plant
operating conditions (curves of energy deficit division, curves of hydro-plant

Basic Methods for Determining an Estimated Rule Curve for Operation of Hydro
shares in peak-load taking; an analysis is submitted of additional cost of non-
productive labor caused by variable conditions of energy production at hydro
plants; an evaluation is offered of the part played by steam plants and
industrial enterprises in regulating the energy balance of the power system
(curves of power deficit in the system). Materials and graphic methods are
presented for determining the probable average values of nationil-ec6nomy
deficits of energy production by a power system; methods are recommended
for approximate evaluation of estimated rule curves for hydro plants and
power systems with predominating hydro plants, for both natural and controlled
runoff conditions.

PURPOSE: This book is intended for engineers, geographers, economists.,and other
persons interested in the potential and present power resources of the Kaz-
akh Republic.
COVERAJM: The monograph consists of two partst The first, based on factual data,
reviews in detail the fuel, hydro and vind-power resources of Kazakhstan, the
degree to which they have been studied, their distribution throughout the ter-
ritory, their quantitative and qualitative characteristics, and also, their

prappective utilization. The second part treats of general principles for
dew-loping the power resources of the Republic as a whole and that of the four
prinelpiLl power-producing ;regions. Considerations-for creating and developing
a unified power system for Kazakh tan are presented and a short historical
resume of the development of Nazakh power mesources up to 1957 Is included.
The economic maps comprising Figures (3) to:'(13) showt (3) the distribution
of potential power resources (4) coal and iignite fields (5) water-power. re-
sources and their distribution into water-aupply zones (6) regionalization
according to frequency and mean awual average velocities of winds (7) vari-
ation of utilization coefficients 6f in'Atalled capacities and expected stand-
stills of wind-power units (8) regionalization of power resources (9) map
of water-power utilization for the northern region (including existing and
planned dams, potential hydroelectric stations,, pipelines, etc.) (10) East-

Abstract Onokhoyskaya summer rya was pollinated with a pollen mix-
ture Gathered from many blossoms, pollen from a sinGle
stamen and pollen from the same spikelet. In the first
case there was a considerable speeding up and more harmo-
nious garmination of the pollen grains and stronger
growth of the pollen tubes. The poorest germination of
the pollen grain and slowest growth of the pollen tubes
was observed in self-pollination.
