ABSTRACT: This study of the Belorusskaya SSR takes two
lessons.
The author recommends that it be studied after the
section "The Western Part of the European USSR."
Lesson plans are given in detail, as well as thorough
instructions as to their presentation; these plans
are accompanied by a sample chronological sequence.
Examples of questions to ask the students are included.

TEXT: The total scattering cross sections of neutrons with 2.13 -

from D(d,n) reactions were measured with the arrangement shown in
Fig. 1.
The measurements can be made with liquid gas. The device is free
from
many shortcomings attached to similar apparatus. After evacuation of
the system, the gas is condensed and led into the test cylinder
under a
pressure of 2 - 3 atm (to reduce evaporation). The gas, cylinder B is
placed into the devar C with liquid nitrogen. The gas evaporating
from
the test cylinder is led back into the gas cylinder B through a
rubber
cooling'SDiral and condensed in the cylinder B. For refilling, the
test
vessel is placed in the dewar. Refilling with argon was necessary

thermal conduo-
tivity of the condensates But boundary effects are found to play an
important r016
when thermal resistance of the condensate, is small, These eff acts
include contact
thervial resistance (due to contamination on the wells), resistance
during phase
transition (because of temperature jumpa between vapor and the
liquid surfaced and
diffusion resistance (caused by impurities of uncondeneed gases and
metai vapor)&
This paper furnishes the first experimental data on the role of
boundary -effects on'
heat exchange during condensation of immobile potassium vapors

TITIE: Aircraft and Mechanical Harvesting of Cotton
(Aviatsiya i
mashinnaya uborka khlopka)
PERIODICAL: Grazhdanskaya aviatsiya, 1958, Nr 6, p 23 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article advocates a wider use of aviation in
cotton
fields and demonstrates its economic advantages. Aviation is
used for fertilization, pest and disease fighting,
defoliation,
and desiccation of cotton plants. The area treated by
aviation,
increased from 22B,000 hectares in 1940 to 1,340,500
hectares in
1957. A 1,000 hectare area takes 57 man/days when
treated'from
an An-2 plane, but 356 man/days when done by an ODN ground
machine.
The economic advantage is illustrated by the following
figures:
in spraying cotton plants with calcium cyanamide (50 kgper
hectare) the daily coverage is 172 hectares by a plane, and
only
7 hectares by the ODN. The cost per hectare is 16.26 rubles
Ca~ft 1/2
Aircraft and Mechanical Harvesting of Cotton 84-58-6-24/59
for an An-2 plane, and 20.10 rubles for the ODN. The
employment
of aviation for defoliation, however, has dropped from 467,200
hectares in 1954 to 136,500 hectares in 1957. The explanation
given is the dependence of the calcium cyanamide treatment on
dew and temperature conditions. Satisfactory results were
achieved only at 170C or higher temperatures, and when the
dew was
ample. Magnesium chlorate, which vorks under any conditions,
is
not available in the needed quantities. The author further
regrets
that the use of the desiccation process is restricted to
cases of
failure of the defoliation operation. But the value of
desiccation
consists in the quick opening of all the capsules for machine
har-
vesting under any circumstances. For this, however, the
supply of
the preferred desiccant, pentachlorophenol, must be stepped
up. The author urges that at least the existent flying
equipment ft,113
be utilized to its full capacity, which, in turn, could be
boosted
by cutting time lost in repairs, transfers, etc.

factory layers with a maximum density (in the case of plutonium)
of 0,5 mg/om 2
was successfully carried out.
The Electrolysis of Acid Solutions of Am, Cm,-and Pu: On the
occasion of electric
deposition from slightly acid electrolytes the method of the
production of
initial materials is considerably simplified, but also hydrogen
is deposited,
and hereby the quality of the deposits deteriorates somewhat. The
eleotric de-
position of plutonium occurred from hydrochloride alcohol-acetone
solutions with
a pH-value of the electrolyte of from 1,5 to 2 and a current
density hf from
5 to 10 milliamp6res/em 2. On this occasion plutonium was
practically deposited
quantitatively, and the layers of satisfactory quality attained
thicknesses of
2
00 mg/cm .The electric deposition of Americium and Curium
occurred at a
current density of 10 milliampares/OM2 and a pH-value of the
electrolyte of from
2 to 2,5. Also a simultaneous deposition of this element is
possible.
In conclusion the eleotrolytic deposition of plutonium from an
alcohol-aoetone
solution of carbon tetrachlorine at pH - 1 and at a current
density of
40 milliamp4res/OM 2 is discussed. The above methods were
repeatedly employed
by the authors.

ABSTRACT: The initial equations for displacements and deformations
of a sandwich plate
with isotropic faces and a transversely Isotropic core are analyzed
using the hypotheses of
transverse incompressibility and preservation of the normal element
for the core, and the
Kirchhoff hypothesis for the faces. The same Poisson coefficient is
assumed for all layers,
and equilibrium equations with boundary conditions are obtained in
terms of the displace-
ments and deformations from the variation in the total energy of a
plate under transverse
pressure. The problem is then reduced to a system of three
differential equations containing
force and displacement functions, and a scalar function describing
the edge effect. These
equations are simplified by neglecting the edge effect, and the
behavior of plates with simply

ylindfical flexure of g plate subjected
to compression and the stability in the small of a circular

The possibility of extending the* application of these equations
