TITLE: 'Acidity' of aluminosilicate catalysts and methods
for its determination as a means of estimating their
catalytic activity

TEXTt A review is presented of the chemical surface proper-
ties Oacidity$) of the above catalysts, (including allied substances
and mixtures of compounds of Al and Si), based on Soviet and Western
works. The work was produced in view of the importance of t4,e acidity
in estimating the catalytic activity in e.g- cracking, polymerization
and isomerization reactions. The acidity depends largely on compgaitiont
preparation and subsequent treatment of the catalysts. Ranges of compo-
sition are quoted and the preparation and activation procedures are dis-
cussed. Theories concerning the structure and action of the above cata-
lyst are described; the active localities are believed to be proton or

electron-pair acceptor centers. Examples of the dependences of activity
on the acidity are given, followed by a description of methods used for
determining the latter property. These include (a) measuring the acidi-
ty of aq. suspensions of the catalysts, e.g. by the measurement Of C02
evolved on adding Na2CO or the rate of inversion of saccharose, by ex-
changing the cations adlorbed on the catalyst with basic ions, following
this by estimation of excess alkali, by potentiometric titrations, pH
measurements, gradual poisoning of the catalyst with alkali followed by,
extrapolation to zero activity, and (b) measuring the acidity in non-
aqueous media, by titration of the suspensions in benzene with.n-buty-
lamine, by determining the adsorption of basic gases and vapors at var-
ious temperatures, and, (for aprotic acidity only) by measuring the rise
in temperature of a benzene suspension of the catalyst on gradual addi-
tion of 1N solutions of Lewis acids in benzene. There are 67 references:
