TITLE,: A large Cherenkov gamma-ray detector
PERIODIC,xL: Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, nu.1, 1962, 60-62
TEXT: The detector consists of a stainless-steel container
in tile form of a truncated cone with water as the working
substance. The total volume of the cone is 82.5 1113, the average
path.length of particles in the working substance is about 3 m
-ind
the Cherenkov radiation produced by them is received by
sixteen specially selected photomultipliers with photocathode
diameters of 19 cm, which are located symmetrically over the
upper face of the detector. A block diagram of tile apparattis is
shown in Fig.2. Tile photomultipliers are divided into two .
s ym'metrical groups and the amplitudes in each group are added
and
then fed into a coincidence circuit. If tile amplitude of
each of tile sixteen photomultipliers reaching the coincidence
circuit i s simultaneously greater than a given threshold value,
the output pulse of tile coincidence circuit triggers the scope
and
the photographic camera automatically records the trace. The

apparattis has been used to record cosmic-ray 11-mesons. Th e
detector was place(] in it telescope consisting of two Geiger
counter arrays, one above and one below, and the pulse from the
telemcope triggered tile pulse recording system. The relative rills
error in the measurement of an energy of 109 eV is reported as
about 20':'). The detector is linear between 109 and 2 x 1011 eV.
Special, wrangements of photomultipliers can be itsed to extend
this range up to 1013 ev. These experiments were carried out in
1959-1960. There are 3 figures.

On the basis of his cnm work, Dadykin describes
in considerable detail techniques of investigating
the effect of low temps in the Polar region and
elsevhere on the resorption of individual
fertilization and nutrition components from the
soil by plants. In view of the fact that nitrogen
resorption is a crit ractor, the author and his
group carried out expts on fertilization by
Orming Of the leaves (of cabbage) with a: dil
ammoaium nitrate soln. The results were good.
Not only is the cold soil by-passed, but waste of
fertilizer through losses in the soil in avoided.
