GINV-RIL~IrKO~ G. 1. "I'leasuremnt of the Torque of an Engine and Determination of R tional Regimes of Operation of an Automobile" Tr. GorIkovsk. Politekhn. In-ta, Vol ), No 2, 1954, 10-38 The author describes an instrument which makes it possible to record toraue on a Cardan shaft, fuel expenditure, magnitude of the opening of the baffle plate of the carburetor and tiLv of motion on one tane under actual road conditions. He considers the question of the accuracy of the measurement of torque. He cites e%perimental data and shows by a calculation huw to determine the proper speed for minimum cost and maxiimim fuel economy. TITLE: Acety1cholinesterase activity of lymphadenoid tissue in PERIODICAL: Radiobiologiya, v. 1, no. 32748 S/205/61/001/006/008/022 D268/D305 and the histopathology severe radiation sickness 6, 1961, 861 - 865 TEXT: Experiments were made with 55 adult cats, 10 used as a con- trol, to determine acetylcholinesterase activity in lymphadenold tissue and the initiation and development of histop~Lthological pro- cesses following a single exposure to X-rays at a dose of 700 r using a ?J~1-3 apparatus (RUM-3 mass X-ray unit 3) with an atmos- pheric rate of 23.5 r/min. Reduction in weight and leukopenia were the criteria for the severity of the sickness. Leukocytes fell from 109000 - 12~000 to 800 - 500/mm3 blood. Death usually ensued on the 13 - 15th day, and was due to exsanguination in the 1 - 15th day af- ter exposure. Palatine tonsils. the mesenteric ganglion, and spleen were studied. AoEtylcholinesterase activity was studied by a hislochemical method described by Koelle and Friedenwald (Ref. 9: Card 1/3 32748 6/205/61/001/006/'008/022 Acetylcholinesterase activity and ... D268/D305 Proc. Soc. Exptl. Biol. and Med., 70, 4, 617; 1949), In the 3 -4th day after irradiation there was increased ace tyl chol lnestVraSe ac- tivity in tonsil. mesenteric ganglion and spleen tissue in the form of more intense staining of the follicle cell elements of the first two and of the Malpighian bodies of the spleen; it was inten se in red pulp reticular stroma cell elementsat t1iis time. During the 10 - 14th day specific cholinesterase ac'Livity in these tissues fell sharply, which confirmed the author's previous results (Ref, 10-. Tez~ dokl~ na V. Vsesoyuzn, slyezde otolaringologov SSSR (The- ses of Papers Presented at the 5tb All-Union Conference of Otola- ryngolists of the USSR) 165, Medgiz, 1958), The increase in acetyl- cholinesterase activity in the first days after irradiation is ait- ributed to the production by the organism of a large number of small cell elements with a large specific cholinesterase content; these perish during the 12 - 14th day resulting in a reduction of the enzyme activity. This was further partially confirmed by study- ing histological preparations at the same periods of increased and reduced acetylcholinesterase activity. At the 3-4th day the size of follicles and Malpighian bodies decreased,. while at the 13-14th Card 2/3 32748 3120 61/001/006/008/022 Acetylcholinesterase activity and ... D268YD305 cay lymphadenoid tissue disappeared almost completely as well as most of the follicles and Malpighian bodies, and the splenn capsule thickened. Results showed that -there is a considerable inhibition of specific cholinesterase i.e. acety1cholinesterase activity in the lymphadenoid tissue in radiation sickness.. showing the import- ance of the cholinergic systems in radiation sickness pathogenesis. ORG: PhvsIcs-enzineering Institute, M TLkrSSR, L'Yov (Fiziko-mckhanicheskiy Institut AN UkrSSR) TITLE: Determination of the chemical resistance and clectrochemicil properties of steels In corrosion-fatigue tpt samples SOURCE: Fiziko-6iimicheskaya mekhanika mnterialov, v. 1, no. 5, 1965, 592-595 TOPW TAGS: corrosion resistant steel, corrosion resistance, sea water corrosion, fatigue test, electrochemical analysis ABSTRACT: The authors describe an assambly designed by them for automatic measurement and recording of data required in determining the corrosion resistance and the electrochemical properties of materials in a medium used for fatigue tests. The requirements for the determination of the chemical resistance are: 1) the technologic history and the treatment given to the samples being studied should be Identical to that of corrosion-fatigue test samples, and 2) the method should be a fast one. The method used is based on the determination of the current of self-diffusion ic ma/cm2 along the polarizing curves, employing samples prepared for corrosion-fatigue tests (e.g. , on the NU machines); the "differential polarizatiow, principle is applied according to G. V. Aldmov (Teorlya, I metody issledovanlya korrozii metallov, Izd. AN SSSR, 1945.). The polarization curves presented show that the corrosion Card L 10269-66 C AC AP5028377 0t SMk~teel, for ex I proceeds with considerable anode control dqq to the intensive sj~T..p , passivation. of the e. It Is caused by the preserWe of molybdenunVi th Ste 1 (3. 14%), decreasing the dep vation effect of the chlorlons Y /Anode controlq's less pro unced in the 11 ~2e corrosion of Kh17N2 el, and almost dis7a-ppears In steels No. 45 1hd ShKh15. In the latter case the corrosion process Is determined by the concentration of oxygen in the medium. Therefore, the results,of the corrosion-fatigue testswill depend on the methods of admission of the medium to the sample, In the experiment con~iucted the fixed potential of SN3 steel was 175 mv more positive than that of Kh17N2 steel, ancV30 mv more positive than of steel No. 45, which also testifies to the increased thermodynamiciltesistance of SN3 steel to sea water corrosion. The assembly dencribed makes it possible to perform investigations of electro- chemical reactions in samples made of structural steel without external load and under conditions closely approximating those of corrosion-fatigne tests. Kats from January to April 1941-1959 in a zone contained between 40-709 lat.N.. and o-6oo long.E, showed that the average resulting index of the south and north components of the meridional circulatio -n is in January - 0.20; in February - 0.10; in March - 0.27 dkm per equatori!al degree. In low latitudes the amplitude of 1. oscillations increases from winter towards spring, while the reverse is true for Im. The amplitude of the Iz oscillations in higher latitudes is greater than in lower, while the 1. is smaller. In the spring, with the increasing latitude there is also a decrease in the amplitude of I., and increase in the Im amplitude. In order to Card 1/3 Use of atmospheric circulation ... s/169/6,2/ooo/oo8/o45/o9o E202/E192 characterise the processes at the south of the European synoptic region, values of circulation indices over the surface bounded by 50-600 lat.N, and 0-60* long.E, are used. In order to find quantitative indicators characterising the position of the planetary height of the frontal zone (KIFZ), a comparison of the intensities of the interzonal transfer with the position of PHFZ with the V/ deviations of indices from the average values taken over a number of years was carried out. Analysis of periods in which the values of Iz were close to normal allowed determination of the character of the changes of the barometric field during the changes of Tm. Analysis of cases in which Im was almost normal and Iz was changing was also undertaken. Various combinations of Im and Iz led to isolation of 9 different types of processes. During the winter most frequently were repeated the processes of meridional transfer. Repetition of processes with sharply expressed meridionality and weakened zonality reaches 62.9a,'*. Peculiarities of the field AT-500 and average positions of PHFZ in processes characterised by different combinations of Im and Iz are discussed. The authors present considerable data on the characteristics of warm fronts in the Ukraine during the mentioned months. An the zone of a warn) front moving In the iower kilometer layer there is either an inversion or a slow temperature drop with height when the moisture content of the air Is high. in the warm air mass above a warm front the temperature decreases uniformly with height, regardless of direc- Tion of movement of the front. Variation of relative humidity with height is not identical under diffe rent synoptic conditions, and is in all probability evidence of a different.thickness of the frontal.clouds.
