The polymeri- zation was carried out by methods described in a previous article. A table shows results of using fifteen different rhodium complexes as catalvat In the polymerization of butadlene In an aqueous emulsion at 50 and 70 . Oomparleon of the catalytic effect of the halides of rhodium shows that the chlorides and the bromides of rhodium have almost identical catalytic ability and stereospecificity. The iodide is inactive at 5009 while in its presence at 700 there takes place a polymerization process of the free radicai type. With the pree- ence of three ammonia molecules in the--fiiiiei-iphere of the Iodide the ,polymerization proceeds by a coordination-ionio mechanism. Results also show that the ateroospeoific polymerization of buta4lene In the ?resence of the Rh3+ complexes studied leads to the formation of trans-1,4-poly- butadiene, regardless of the number and nature of the bonds.
