and dispatcher control systems. This book covers the program of
courses on Electrical Engineering in Mining for students special-
izing in "Underground Coal Mining'. In the Introduction the au-
thor gives a brief historical sketch of the development of elec-
trical engineering in mining in Russia and the USSR. He mentions
i------F.N. Shklyarskiy, I)octor of Technical Sciences and Professor at
the Leningrad Mining Institute, as the founder of mining electri-
cal engineering as a new branch of science. The following scienti-
fic research institutes are listed In connection with the develop-
ment of this science and of the electrical equipment used in min-
Ing: VUGI, DonUGI, VEI, and IOD AN USSR. The author thanks Tekh-
nikum, Director D.K. Zimin for help on the book and the following
technicians for providing the drawings and graphs: V.L. Kozhev-
nikov, A.M. Strellstov, G.Ya. Domnich, B.P. Demchenko and G.V.

substituted derivatives of the S-ft-naphthyl)-thioglycolic acid were
investigated. The "peri-effect" has been found In the series of
1,4-, 1,5-, and 1,8-metoxynaphthylthioglycolic acids, in the same
series of chloronaphthylthioglycolic acids, and in veo bromonaphthyll-
thioglycolic acids. The effect increases with the vimber of unhaund
electrons in the outer shell of the sub3titutlng atom. Chlorine aml
bromine have 6 such electrons. The "peri-effect" Is therefore more
pronounced than In other atoms.

ABSTRACT: Experiments oonducted by the Kutaisi IMotor Vehicle Plant ineni
Ordzhonikidze showed a method of saving material, and handling
the operations and electric current in the induction heating
of piston pins by intermittent cooling. The pins are heated
for 5*8 to 6 seconds, cooled for 1.8 to 2 seconds with a
final heating temperature of 9200C. After this the final
surface hardness of the pins was RC - 30 ! 40.
