Twenty patients in the first, 54 in the second and 26 in the third stage of hypertens-
ive disease were Investigated. BMR and functional tests with 1131 were used In the
investigations in addition to clinical examination. The following conclusions were
reached: In a majority of cases in the first stage of the disease the rate of accu-
mulation of 1131 in the thyroid gland to increased or at least is near the upper limit
of the normal, an the disease progresses this figure declines and becomes marked-
ly lowered in the 3rd stage of the disease; in the majority of patients in the first
stage of the disease the BMR is increased and It increases further in the later
stages. A comparison of the results obtained by means of functional tests using I
and from the estimation of BMR leads to the conclusion that the former method is
the more accurate.
