(Myeshdunaroday geograficheskiy kongrese v Brasilii, Russian) PMMMAL- Vestnik Ak&demii Nauk SSSRv 1957, Vol 27, Nr 2. pp 80-84 (U.S.S.R.) Reocivedi 5 / 1957 Reviewedt 6 / 1957 ABSTRAM Silloe 1871 iS International geogmphice.1 congresses have been held of whioh only one, the last, took place in South America (Rio de Janeiro). The U.S.S.R. did not take part in the three preceding oongressos, so that our geographers had no opportunity for 20 years to meet their foreign colleagues. It was not until 1956 that the AoadenW of Science of the U.S.S.R. received an offioial invitation, whereupon il scientists were able to travel to South America. The stay of our scientists In South America ocnatisted of two stages: the first consisted in work at the con- ferenoe in vvhich the Soviet delegates participated as "members of a great international society on an equal footing with their foreign ocolleagues" , and the seciond in excursions, which offered the Russian geographers the possibility of becoming acquainted with Brazil as tourists. More than BOO delegates took part in the work of the congress. Three quarters of them were Americans, 20% were Europeans, and J$ came from Asia or Africa. In spite of this ratio, the prinoipel, part on this congress was not played ly Card 1/3 the Americans but by the Europeans (so the author believes). Card 213 The International Geographiml, Congress held in Brazil PA - 2496 50% of all lectures were delivered by Europeans (including the Russians), 16% by soientists from Africa and Asia, and onlY 34% by the America= p half of whom were from Brazil. The most im- pressive. moat methodical. and theoretically the most interesting lectures were those held by French, Polish, and Soviet delegates. Tho* the Russian geographers delivered only 8 lectures, they sulmitted 43 scientific papers written in the French languagep which attracted much attention. It o&nnot be denied that also the delegates from the U.S.A and other capitalist states delivered valuable lectures, but they were moreof a private nature and never stressed the necessity of & oomon "front" to be formed by all scientists. Oonneotea with the Congress there was a cartographicel exhibition showing geographical maps of 20 countries. The principal participants in this exhibition were the USSR and England. The excursion org&nAzed after the Congress made a considerable im- pression on the Soviet delegrtes, and they were particularly im- pressed by the perional. qualities of the simple Brazilian. The
