PERIODICAL: Vestnik Vozdushnogo Flota, 195T, 11r 12, pp. 46-52 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: This article is composed of two chapters. The first
chapter, "Leaving the Aircraft"/ is written by
Col N.Ya..Gladkov. This chapter deals with the procedure
being ejected from an aircraft with the aid of an ejection
seat. The main advantage of catapulting is that the pilot
can be ejected from the aircraft in the air at fairly
close to sonio speed and at any altitude either over the
ground or the sea. A description of the whole ejection
procedure Is given. According to the author, there are
many officers in the Soviet Air Force who master perfectly
the catapulting from jet aircrafts. Some officers, nwaes
are given whom it is said have several dozen jumps to
their credit. They are usually catapulted at an altitude

TITLE: With the Army's Parachutists (U armeyskikh parashyutistov)
PERIODICAL: Kryllya rodiny, 1958, Nr 12, pp 18-19 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author reports on 1958 developments in parachute jimrping in the
Military and Air Forces and the contests held in all military sectors, units
and districts throughout the year. The realization that skill in parachute
jumping can save a pilot's life, and develop traits essential for a fighter-
pilot, made the sport extremely popular among the Military and Air Forces.
This was vividly demonstrated in the 1958 finals in district contests.
Personalities mentioned include: Master of Sportsp Private P, Ostrovskiy
(ZakVO), absolute World Champion; Lt Col I. Savkin (Voronezh Milit District),
Captain V. Bondarchuk, Master of Sports (Carpathian Military DiQaclt, Sr

AUTHOR: Gladkov, P.Ya., Director of the Gi-Drot--unsneft' Institute
TITLE: Problems of Trunk Pipeline Constructors (7,a&Lchi proyektirovshchikov
truboprovodnykh magistraley)
PERIODICAL: Neftyanik, 19'~,8, Nr 6, _')P 5-7(USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author states that the rapid growth of pe-troleum and natural
gas production, as well as the discovery and exploitation of new oilfields,
calls for an extensive development of trunk pipeline construction. Pipeline
construction can be carried out much faster than before due to the mechaniz-
ation of such operations as digging trenches, laying, -md coating pipes, welding,
etc. This can be seen from the example of the 720 mm, . L.-,as line Stauropol'-Yos-
cow, which was built in a period of only eight months. The most important
features of the new pipelines now under construction are their greater capacity,
the larger diameter of pipes, and the higher capacity of their pur-Ping stations.
Under present conditions, petroleum and gas production is growing rapidly, and
increasing quantities of crude oil are being supplied to refineries and e2W..:.-t-
ing centers. For that reason the long disto-rice pipeline networ-1 should be
developed in relation to the future growth of the petroleun industry and river
and railroad transportation facilities. Problems connect--!d with the construct-
ion of high capacity pipelines demand a new approach to the question of punp
station equipment. It has been found that modern pumping stations 3ust be
equipped with only one pumping unit consisting of 3-4 T)wqps of 750m /h. or 1,10C
Card 1/3

m /h capacity. Still more powerful pumps of 2200-3,000 m A capacity are under
study at present. The installation of such ptu-.4)s would i%,quire more powerful
electric motors. Therefore, it would be ueucs,%try to review WIC Capacity of
electrical power lines and to constrict addiLional long distance lines. Trunk
pipeline operations are connected with the prololem of pctr:)Ieum storage facilities,
and of petroleum loading and unloading ecr.~ip~ent. Projects of them Giprotransneftl
Institut~ provide for the construction of reinforced concrete tanks of
10,000 -m capacity, built of prefabrica-!x-d assemblies. To bring crude oil to re-
refineries located. in Gor'kiy, Yaroslavf, and Li the Moscow region, the institute
is planning to construct a network of' lines 1,~00 kni. long. Between 1958 and
1960 the institute will have to develop the pipeline network in the lawbyshev
region, which is supposed to supply petroleum to refineries to be built in
Belorussia, the Ukraine, and the European p,%:t-t olf t1he RSFS-R. The institute is
also pInnning to construct the Kuybysh~ev-Bryansk petlloleum product pipeline,
where for the first time in pipeline construztiDu, t:,.Le pirnping stations will be
equipped with explosion-resistant motors installed on the same pnmises with
pumps. This petroleum product pipeline will be equipped wit"a radiorelLay system
which later might also be used for of pump station operations. More-
over, important research work is being carried out in com ction with the proposed
supply of petroleum products and gas to Ybscow and adjacent towns. Much importance

is attached by the Giprotransneft' Institute to the standardization of varioua
buildings, installations, pump stations, etc. Considerable cyperience has been
acquired by the institute in planning and designing bulk plants and terrAinals
whose installations must also be standardized. To ensure a further improvement of
construction methods, the adequacy of designs should be checked during the process
of the pipeline exploitation, and any defects reiealed by oilmen should be re-
ported to constructors.

ABSTRACT: A criticism of the foreign idealistic philosophical concepts
connected with cybernetics. In the article no light is shed
upon the mathematical apparatus of cybernetics, vithout which
the author's critique of the philosophical principles of
cybernetics is deprived in significant measu--e of its

plimping-systeni network, ind of tesis ni,cw ot iridi,.'dual fittings
(bends LA various type., fhr-ee-,,va~ juints, and rvducLrs). Ex-
periments were made to determine the influence of Lhe scale ef-
fect on coefficients of resistance. In tests made of steel models
the lower lit-nits of the so-called Self-SiMiLar range were deter-
mined (relaLiVe to the Reynolds number), which Imits declined
as the model's diameter decreased; in addition, various factors
were determined with respect to a numter of fittings and types
of pumping svstems. As a model's size decreased, its co-
etficient of resistance was tound to incrt-ase. Ail xpproxim.,te

Using Models to Investigate Pressure Losses (cont. )
pumping-system assemblies made fron-i one type of material by a given fabrica-
tion method. It emerged that fittings of the same type welded from sheet steel
and light sheet iron exhibited differing coetficients of resistance in the sell-
similar range and that the coefficients of resistance were not uniformly depen-
dent on the model scale. For this reason it is still not possible to give a
quantitative estimate of the influence of the model scale on the coefficient of
resistance which would be accurate enough for use in large-diameter pumping-
neLwork designs.
