Aserological examination was made of the sera of children assumedly
diagnosed for whooping cough in spite of a neiptive bacteriological
test. Reactions of fixation of the complement(by therLnl and cold
methods) and agglutination (by volumetric method and slide :reaction)
ware applied. In 31% of cases, the eerological methods employed
made it possible to detect antibodies to pertussis's rod-shaped bac-
teria; this fact indicates the atypical forms of whooping cough in
these children. The sonaltivity reaction of agglutination exceeded
that of the fixation of the complement.

TITM Study of the Thermolabile Antigen of Shigella Flexnerl Types C and
F and Its Immunogenic Properties
PMUODICAL-. Zhurnal mikrobiologii, epidemiologii I immunobiologii, 1959, Nr 9~~o
pp 85-90 (USSH)
ABSTRACT: Tests were performed with 118 Shigella flexneri types a and f (S-
form) to detect the presence of a thermolabile antigen. The presence
of this was finally demonstrated bys 1) reaction with tripaflavine
and Milon's reagent (the method used to detect a Vi-antlgen In Sal-
monella typhosa) and 2) agglutination reaction with hyper-immune rabbit
sera, free of antibodies to the thermolabile antigen. Further tests
showed that the amount of thermolabile antigen in Shigella flexneri
drops by 4-8 times after the strains have been hegted for 30 minutes
at 60-800C. After 30 minutes' autoolaving'at 12D C, the antigen dis-
appears completely. In the course of preparing complete antigens from
Shigella flexnerl containing thermolabile antigen, the main antigen
lose seems to occur during the growth of the bacilli In the reactor
Card 1/2 under aeration. Other factors, however, also lead to a decrease in the

amount of thersolabile antigen at later stages in the antigen pre-
paration process. These factors are not yet understood. Shigella
flexneri labile antigen proved to play a great part In the formation
of Immunity in experiments on animals. References are made tol T.G.

TITLE: Calculation of Certain Mono-Substituted Benzenes Using
the "Metallic" Model (Raschet nekotorykh monozameshch-

PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedeniyj Fizika)
1959, Nr 19 PP 170-171 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The paper reports the use of the "metallic" model to
calculate certain properties of mono-derivatives of
benzene 005NH2, G6H5Cl, C6H5F, C6H5Br) and of C5H5N.
The four derivatives of benzene are similar in their
electrical and chemical properties and they have
absorption bands in the region 3800 - 2300 1. The
following assumptions were made in these calculations:
(A) each molecule can be represented by means of a one-
dimensional potential well with infinitely high walls
and length equal to the length of the molecule;
(B) two Tt-electrons of the substituent and one
'n-electron from each carbon atom form one bond and in
yridine the benzoid electron structure Is conserved;
Card 1/3 M the effect of the electro-negative substituents is
allowed for by introducing a further well M at the

bottom of the main well. The authors calculated the
wavelengths of the low-frequency absorption bands on the
five molecules. These calculated values are given in
col. 2 of Table I and they agree satisfactorily with the
experimental values given in uol. 3. Table 2 lists the
energy levels of benzene, aniline and pyridine. The
data of Table 2 suggest that on the introduction of the
substituent atom into the benzene -ring in place of the
C-H group (pyridine), the benzene levels ara split.
When the substituent atom replaces a hydrogen atom
(aniline), new le,.,,ols appear which are not due to the
benzene ring. The first and socond bands In the aniline
spectrum and in the other throe monodarivatives of
benzene are due to transitions frcm a level due to the
substituent onto split levels of the benzene ring.
The calculated and empirical values of the dipole moment
and the oscillator strength of aniline were found to be
in satisfa.-tory agreamont. For aniline and pyridine
Card 2/3 the authors obtained also curves whiCh ware p:~oportional

TITLE': Extensive chlorination of butane
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal prikadnoy khimii, v. 35, no. 3, 1962, 593-601
TEXT: The authors wished to c-otablish the character of the conti-
nuous chlorination of butane in a solvent medium. Solvents used
were Ccl hexachlorobutadiene or polychlorobutanes and the chlori-
nation rtaction was initiated by the introduction of free radicals.
In otudying the effect of the initiator the authors have found that
to maintain a steady reaction the initiator should be added in
small quantities throughout the process. The reaction has also been
0
found to depend on the molar ratio of chlorine to butane and the
best results were obtained when this ratio was equal to 5 and the
re8idence time of the intermediate products substantially increased.
It was shown that at 8010 the average C1 content in the molecule
of polychlorobutane was equal to the ratio of Cl : butane used. The
degree of 01 bonding showed a maximum at 800C while at the same

TITLEj Effect of some factors of composition and manufacture on the

TEXT: The results of wear tests on plastics using emery cloth (EC) and
metal gauze (MG) ared..given. For MG wear tests and testa with smooth steel
the equation v - v P holds mainly for the frictional-wear while the EG

much more sensitive than t~e '-,C te3t. The EC test shows the wear in
polymers to be a linear function of the product of impact strength and
hardness, whereas according to the LG test the wear is a linearfunction
of the product of tensile strength and breaking elongation. There are 3
figures and 3 tables. The English-language reference is% ASTM Standards

ABSTRACT;' The authors discuss the shortcomimqs of certain oi the glues
thus far used for fastening the polyvinylchloride masticated rubber shielding
(formula 57-40) which is presently in wide use as a protection against radio-
active cofitamination. Experimental work has shown that glue compositions on
a perchlorvinyl rosin base with a small admixture of epoxide resin ED-5 1"m&
good adhesion to formula 57-40 polyvinylchloride masticated rubbers. The
introduction into tha composition of epoxido re%in hardeners leads to the
formation of a tbxee-dimensional structure during the hardening pro" of
