TLXT-. Previous transformer steel melting techniques were based on the
combined oxidizing of carbon with iron ore anJ oxygen, and diffusion deoxidation
of the metal with ferrosilicon admixture. The cold rolled soteel* produced by
this technique showed unsatisfactory magnetic properties. During 1959 and 1960
some Improvements were made at the 101K tneluding the use of an increased amount
of it-on ore for oxidation of Cr, Mg and P; red)Action of the carbon and manganese
content; decreased oxidation of the metal during melting, more complete.deoxi.-.
dation of the steel during the reduction period. A more accurate correlatioh'of
iron-ore and admixtures in the metallic portion of the charge, increased slag
amount, strict observatiort of temperature conditions during oxygen blast, and an
increased amount of silico-calcium, were the improvements achieved. On the basis

were established at the end of oxygen blast (1,590 - 1,6200C) and in the ladle

TITLE: Synthesis of Amino Acids From Oxalacetic Acid in SpmtExtracts
(Sintez aminokislot iz shchavelevouksusnoy kisloty v ekstrak-
takh iz proro8tkov)
PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 124, Nr 1,
pp 217 - 219 (USSR)
ABSTRACT; It is the aim of the present paper to investigate more
thoroughly by quantitative chromatography the already earlier
(Ref 1) proved synthesis of aspartic acid in homogenates from
plant tissues in the presence of oxalacetic acid. This method
permits the simultaneous determination of the fluctuations
of the content of oilier amino acids. 8 - 9 days old wheat
and barley sproWnwere used in the experiments. Asparagine
was photometrically determined by extraction (leaching out)
of the spots with aqueous isopropanol (1:1). Table I gives
the results. Herefrom can be seen that an energetic synthesis
takes place in the extracts from the spxuft., as mentioned in
the title. The maximum is 300~ as comparedto the control
Card 1/3 (water - 10W%). Thus, no doubt is left that oxalacetic acid
Synthesis of Amino Ac*ds From Oxalacetic Acid in Germ SOV/2o-124-1-62/69
'Extracts
is a nitrogen-free precursor of aspartic acid in plants. At
the sarne time a still more energetic synthesis of al&nine
takes place. Alanine is formed as a result of amination of
pyruvate which in turn is formed by decanboxylat~on of
oxalacetic acid. Asparagine, glutamine, Y mi 0 butyrilc acid
serine are consumed in the synthesis -7 c
and 0 lparii` acid and
alanine. They are re'quired in the transaminat on process.
Glutamic acid was only consumed in the barley germs. Thus,
the mentioned synthesis takes place by transamination of
oxalacetic acid and pyrvvic acid. In this connection aspara-
gine and glutamine play an important part as sources of
amino groups. The authors refer to a number of still un-
clarified circumstances in the above mentioned process and
emphasiie the points still to be .clarified. There are 1 table
and 12 references, 8 of which are Soviet.

effect of the mineralization of the water occurring below the
petroleum layer and of the drilling compound on the results of the
neutr+ganuna well logging; this is explained by thia- anomalously
high capture cross section of thermal neutrons by the chlorine

Abstract: To determine the location of the water-petr,;~leum contact im regions
where the water below the petroleum layer is IV-0-ly To:!_neftlized,
when the content of the chlorine is much less in ths petr6leum-
bearing part of the strata than in the water-bearfLug ane, it is
propoBed to employ Btandard neutron-gamma logging. The favorable
results obtained by using the proposed method are reportea for the
determination of the location of the water-petroleinn centact in 2
wells in the Tuymazinskiy formation. It is noted -tWqt it is possi-
ble to use standard neutron-40ma logging also -o eitimate the

formation. It is proposed to employ for this est te ~.he relative
values of the neutron-gamma le:~gging, which are independent of the
sensitivity of the apparatus, of the intensity of the-etutron
source, etc. It is proposed that the relative neutran-gamma-logging
value employed be the ratio of the average intensity of the second-
ary gamma radiation opposite the investigated stratum to its aver-
age intensity oppofift the reference level. The value of this ratio
differs by 15% opposite petroleum-bearing and water-bearing aand-
stones, with an accuracy of measurement of 2%.

Abstract: To eliminate the influence of the freshening of the stratum water
(in the case of wells just drilled this is caused by the fil-trate
of the drilling compound, and in the case of operating wells,
this is caused by water from the shaft cof the well) it, is proposed
to purify the water-petroleuin contact not earlier than 10 days
after placing the well in operation, and only atter fir.9t tbailing
it until the stratum water appears. To reduce the effect of the
water in the trunk of the well, it is proposed to fill it with
fresh water and to use a depth instrumenz of increased diameter.

PERIODICAL: Yaroslavsk. prom-at' (Sovnarkhoz Yaroslavsk. ekon. adm. r-na), .1958,
Nr 5, pp 25 - 29
ABSTRACT: The rubber mixtures made of SKS-ZOAM (non-regulated oil-filled polymer)
have an increased shrinkage and an unsatisfactory adhesiveness due to
sweating out of the oil; their vulcanized rubbers have inferior physical-
chemical properties compared to the rubbers of SKS-ZOA, have a higher
wear-resistance, but show a lower heat-formation. The filling with oils
of rigid rubbers, like SKS-ZOAM needing thermo-mastication, lacks any
technical foundation, because the thermo-masticated rubbers of the
polymers of this type are enriched by a considerable quantity of low-
molecular and high-molecular fractions negatively affecting the technolo-

chemical composition was studied by determining tho hydroxyl groups in organic com-

that ti iethal is a mb:ture of complex chemical products formed by the reaction of phthalict
