TITLE: Truing and Cutting of Stainless Steel Electrode Wire (Pr~vka
i rubka elektrodnoy provoloki it nerzhaveyushchey etali)
PERIODICAL: Svarochnoye Proizvodstvo, 1957, No 10, pp 37-3s USSR)
ADSTiZACT: 7'he purpose of aub,ject inv~~stigntian - p.rf'arml?d col.lectivE~ly
by the Moskva Electrode Plant, Ts?dIICh~~khiET and the plant
"Sere i 9iolot" - was to find the optium mechanical properties
of stainless electrode wire. Since the standard "I'OCT~246-5 4"
does not specify the mechanical properties of wire, consider-
able variations of these properties in various consignments
and within a oonsignment are the result, and there is a high
prcent~ge of ~vire rejects in truing-and-cutting machines
through ~yarpage and raptur~ls. Wire grades "0~18H9" r "1X13H9T"
and "~20H10I~6" were experimentally investigated and the
optimum heat treatment conditions and drawing technology were
found. The difference of properties of presently produced
stainless steel electrode wire is illustrated 'by the test re-
sults of87"wire consignments at the plant "Serp i Molot".
Card 1~2 This wire was annQaled in flame furnaces ar 850 - 900o C; 23~

The voltage and cLirrent employed wsre 5~ 5 V and X00 amp The
el.e ctrolyte (50:50 BeC12 : P1aC1) was replen:Ished from an adjacent
bath with an insol.ub.Le anode ~ The energy consumed s.n one test
arr~ounted to 34 OOC- amp-~i, the max~.mum output being 3 ~ 5 kg of
refined berylliumy which corresponded to an average ~:urrent
efficiency of 80~~ Recovery of beryllium attained was also 800
Th.e cathode deposit constituted 94~ of the d.issol.Ved anode
material, A homogeneou3 deposit, in the farm of bright plate-
like crystals, meawur:ing 15 x ?_.0 mm~ was produced For the
preparation of anodes., beryllium obtained either electrolytically
or by thermal reduction of fluoride, was used In the former
case, it contained Oo02-0,05 Fe, 0~1~ Ni, and 0,005--0~008~' Cu;
in. the latter case the impurity content was 0 ~12 a Fe, approxi-
mately O o01~ Ni, and O o01~ Ou and Mn., In most cases the refined
metal contained 0 0005.0 ~006~ Fa, 0 ~Ol~ Ni, and 0 0003 Ou; th
manganese content did not exceed. n x 10-4;0, that of zinc and
silicon being less than n x 10~~~; the deposit contained less
than 0~3 g/t boron and less than Oo04 g/t rare earths

Electrolytic Ref~inin~ of k~eryll.iutn
the time required fcr the current effici_er~cy to attain a steady
value was the same (abaut 2~ h), .irrespective ai' the purity of
BeCl~ in the electrolyte, but the maximum r_:urre~lt; efficiency
attained was lower when impure I3eG1~ was used The current
efficiency and recovery attained ~.n a 1~0-hour test were 8~ and
83~ respectively Under these conditions ~ 50h of beryllium was
deposited in the .form of large, plate-like crystals and 50~ in
tine form of smaller grains j strongly adherinK to the cathode.
The laboratory experiments were xepeated cn a sornewriat .i-argr
scale? after which long~t:erm to is wore caziducted :i.n a p.~lot plant.
I:n view of prom.is.ing results obtained, a series of tests on an
industrial scale was car. rigid out;, A standard bath far electrolytic
e:~ctracti.an of beryllium was used foz~ this puxpasa The anode
consisted of se~aen beryllium powder compact rings (each weighing
1 ~~g), su.~pended on a graplZ.~te ~~od.. Before star. tiny; the refining
operatic~r.~y the bath was ~~perated for a short per. iod with a
graphite anode, in axder to remave from t1-ie electrolyte those
metallic impurities whir.:h are mare electrowpositive tElan beryllium.
