This-is a statistical analysis of 1,415 autop:sy cases from the Pathological Institute
of Wroclaw. It could be ascertained that the wide application of irradiation had
caused a prolongation of life of 1.9 yr. , and a decrease in the spread into the
adjacent organs of 10.8%. However, there were no differences in the incidence of

Experiments an the antigenic variability of S. flexnerl 1b strains were made on
experimental animals and artificial media. S. flexneri lb strains when passaged on
white mice, were found to lose their type antigen I and to acquire type antigen 111,
the composition of group antigens remaining unaffected. Changes of this kind were
exhibited by all 7 S. flexneri lb strains used for passages. The changes in the anti-
genic structure seem to be permanent, as the strains maintained for 12 months on
artificial med'a behaved in the agglutination as after immediate isolation from mice.
No changes in biochemical properties could be found between parent and changed
strains. Further experiments revealed that, besides type antigen 111, the changed
strains had acquired an additional antigen. The additional type antigen of artificial-
ly obtained S. flexneri. 3 variants in serologically identical with antigen X, which
occurs in similar variants of this typ*. encountered in natural candWons.

serum component participate in opsonization of Salmonella typhimurium.
The two opsonizing factors operate independently. The nonspecific
scrum component seems to play the main role in opsonization of the
bacteria, while normal antibodies merely enhance phagocytosis. The

APSTRACT: rn vitro experiments with normal sera from nonimmunized pigs

of specific antibodies. In other animal species (rabbits and guinea
pigs) opsonization of Staphyloooccue aureue in vitro is attributed to
t&e action of normal antibodies and components of complement. However,
in these experiments with pig sera. complement did not participate in
pfiagoeytoole of the bacteria. Both calcium and magnesium cations must
