Abstract : The bacteria) cultivated in MFD) were irradiated with a
dose of 32 r and placed for ine hour wider a temperature
of 370. It was discovered that after sucL treatuent, the
bacteria secreted a lytic factor transferred in subino-
culations. Checking of strains showed that they are not
lysoGeaic. The lytic factor was liberated wider various
doses, but a dose of 30 r was optiral. The first subino-
culation smetices mve neeative results. Under small
doses the lysis was observed in the first passages;
under large doses, lysis was nanifested later. Lhider

ABSTRACT: The author describes probable ways of the prop ag -
ationof phages (short for bacteriophages). By it-
self the phage is a macromolecule of the nucleopro-
teid which has some properties of a living organism.
Chemically, a phage is composed of nucleoproteids
with a 40-501A addition of nucleinic acids, mostly
the desoxyrib-)nucleinic acids. Thus, in contrast
to the bacterium, the phage is of a simpler compo-
sition, being basically a nucleoproteid. All the
phages are divided into two groups - "virulent" and
11moderatell phages. The I'virulent"pliage. absorbs the
bacterium and destroys it, and the second can coexipt
with the bacterial cell without dertroying it. Only
from such cells is the inactive phage spontaneously
0
producing a "virulent" one, which destroys the cell

PERIODICAL: Nauka i zhizn', 1959, No. 5, pp 21-24 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Describing radioactivity in general, the author, Director of
the Biofizicheskiy institut Chekhoslovatskoy akademii nauk
(Biophysical Institute of the AS 6SR), points to the danger
of strontium 90, caused by atomic tests. Strontium enters
the human body in the form of foodstuffs (especially plants).
He deals with methods of determining changes in living or-
ganisms due to radioactive influence, such as analysis of
urine and detection of leukemia.

-11 This conference was organized by UNESCO, the Internatlonal Atomic
Agency and the Italian Atomic Commission in June 1959. Altogether 150 scien-
tirle workers attended the conference, rive of them from Sovi.et-bloc countries.
The conference was very interesting in that it showed the Importance of radiation
effects in small doses. Much work remains to be done in order to ascertain
whether small doses represent a biological hazard for living orgarlLzms. It is
prebumed that small doses really can have a harmful effect. wliere robody expected

TIM: Biological Effects of Radioactive Carbon
PERIODICAL: Jaderna energie, 1960, No. 6, Pp. 181 - 183
TEXT: Radioactive Carbon C - 14 originating during nuclear weapon tests con-
stitutes a grave danger to the health of the living and cg?ing generations., It
was estimated that by the end of 1958, as much as 93.5-10 atoms of artlfl~ial
C - 14 could have originated from nuclear tests. This estimate, however, does not
consider any losses of neutrons released during the nuclear explosions (Leipunskyy.
1957). Therefore, the actual increase of_Q - 14 due to nuclear tests is estimated
to be somewhere between 12-102Y and 48'W'( atoms, representing an equivalent of
about 107,000 curie-or 23.4 kg. It can, therefore, be expected that the content
of C - 14 in the human body will gradually increase during the coming years and
It is estimated that the additional radioactive dose due to C - 14 will reach 8
billion during the next 30 years. This, in turn, will cause a rapid increase
of genetic mutations in the coming generations. Estimates to this effect have been
made by several western scientists (Crow, Pauling). This mutation eff4ct can,

Biological Effects of Radioactive Carbon A201/A026
according to latest results of scientific research, be intensified by the so-callied
transmutation effect. When radioactive carbon is incorporated Into a biologically
important molecule, such as desoxyribonucleic acid, it increases the detrimental
mutation effect by decomposing into radioactive nitrogen, thus combAning +.he ioni-
sation effect of C - 14 and the transmutation effect of radioactive nitrogen.

TITLE: Methods of corrosion-proof protection against high temperatures of
carbon-steel pipes at the Thermal Power Plant in Aghirej
PEI?'ODICAL-. Energetica, v. 9, no. 10, 1961, 413 - 415
TT-1 The article presents three methods used at the Thermal Power Plant in
Agh- -..? for the protection of blast pipes against corrosion. The blast pipes
of t'. Aghirej power plant are made of OLT 35 and OLT 45 steels. When unprotected,
these pipes became useless after 300 to 400 hrs of operation. To increase their
life, the OLT 35 pipes were coated by spraying them with aluminum. This method,
however, gave good results only in pipes installed at the cold end of the boilers.
The second method used in Aghirel consisted of spraying aluminum silicate on the
metalized tube in three layers, followed by a heat treatment of the coated tubes
at 7000 - 9006C. This method did not give satisfactory results, for the protec-
tive layer peeled off, immediately after the pipes were removed from the an-
nealing furnace. The third method consisted of spraying ethyl-Silicate on the

metalized blast pipes. The ethyl-silicate layer had a thickness of 0.1 -0.2 mi.
Pipes treated with ethyl-silicate showed the best resuits and operated for 9
months without any defects. The last method ensured protection against tempera-
tures of up to 9009C. Ordinary metalizing, with or without a protective layer
of sodium silicate, is a sufficient protection for pipes installed at the cold
end of the boilers. There are 2 figures.
