(Institute for Machinery Research of the Czechoslovakian
Academy of Sciences) arranged an all-state conference on using
plastics in engineering, which was held at Liblice from
November I - 3, 1960. Thirty papers were read and discussed.
In his opening address Engineer Kv~iton",. director of the
organising institute, emphasised that the present trend is
towards increasing the parameters of the equipment and
improving the productivity.
Engineer B. PavlJrk (SPK) spoke of the economic problems
of plastics as compared with traditional engineering
materials;inCzechoslovakia, plastics are of extreme importance
in view of the fact that Czechoslovakia does not have
satisfactory reserves of raw materials for its ferrous and

non-ferrous metallurgy industry and the Czech power resources
are relatively expensive. The import of Soviet crude oil
opens up wide potentialities for the development of a plastics
industry and 1 ton of plastics can replace 3-10 tons of non-
ferrous metals,
Engineer Hnfdek (MCHP) compared the world production of
plastics with the development of the production in Czecho-
slovakia; the consumption is likely to increase from the
present 14 kg per head to an average of 30-35 kg by 1975.
Engineer J. Aebenda (UMCHESAV) spoke of the manufacture of
alkali polymerised polyamide, a method which enables manufacture
of massive castings from high molecular polyamine (three
Czech patents).
Academician Professor 0. Wichterle pointed out the possibility
of replacing steel and cast iron by plastics.,
Engineer V. Zilvar (SONT) spoke of the results achieved at
SVONr in solving the problems of polyamide fatigue,
Personnel of Vi~SPL-Pardublce spoke of epoxyde resins with
a higher heat resistance.

principles to be applied in designs in which polyester glass
laminates are used.
Engineer B. Schreiber (SV6M`r) reported on plastics of a high
strength and high thermal resistance (phenol, epoxyde, silicon
and melamine laminates). 0
Engineer J, Kabelka and J. Vejchar (Ustav pro vy'~~kum stroju
eSAV - Institute for Machinery Research of the CSAV) presented
two papers on polyester laminates.,
A further set of papers was devoted to glues.
A. Chva'tal (SVOOM) reported on corrosion-resistance of plastics
and plastic coatings,
Engineer F. Kadlec (Fatra-Napajedla) spoke of lining, coating,
varnishing and dipping containers and other articles in PVC.

and after exposure inhibited the appearance of the
destruction of lymphocytes and phaGocytes of the
cellular fragcents 3-4 hours in comparison to the
control. To a lesser deGree, the appearance of an
regenerative wave was delayed by Granulopoiesis mid
the setting in of karyorrhexin of the eosinophils.
The stronGest influence was exerted by ethanol nar-
cosis; the least effect was observed with the use
of luminal. The siGmificance of these chanGes for
the pro6mosis of radiation sickpess is tuiclear.

ciple and characLeristics of a newly developed
electronic semiconductor device, the "solion"
electrochemical diode. The operating principle
of the device is illustrated in figure 1. This
principle is used as the basis of two types of
integration diodes. The first type is the "con-
centration" diode consisting of two electrodes Amwir Asmarce (4 11ions

which makes electrical contact with a screw terminal passing through the plastic stop-
per at the other end of the casing. The electrolyte consists of a 0.5 n solution of
Al and a 0.01 n solution Of 12. A brief e4)lanation of the electrochemical reaction

Abstrect I An investigation wes mode of the influence of plastic do-
fornstion on the superconductivity of gallixri. An increase

to rviso the veluo of Tc for ordinary gallium fror, 1.070
to 2.50 K and more by moons of plastic dofornntion at helitn
toriporpture. For the other modification of gallium, which
occurs in the case of oondonsetion rt rapid cooling below
600K, the value of Tc 'risoc from 6-5 to 70K nnd above. Car-
