ABSTRACT- T.I. Pugin-Yegorov and I.P. Mordovchenko invented a metbod
for making 18-20 m bore holes in sandy grounds with the help
of a pole made from 16" pipes with a detachable pointed end.
This tube is driven into the ground with a pile driver. Al~
filtering column is then lowered into the tube, which id's
then extracted while the point and the column remain.

ABSTRACT: The article describes an improvement, proposal of the
Engineers L.L. Smrchek and G.F.'Maslovskiy involving
'
work
the replacement of.a 68.34 x 8.09 m bile frarie
section of the Volzhskaya GF.8.(_Volga,GZS) project
by a section made of-large-size~reinforced concrete
panels. The composite pile framework's task will
be linking the machine room of the above ~~Mlwiith
its earth dam. The proposELl's good points are,.
1) the section to be made of reinforbed concrete

ABSTRACT: Thei'velocity of a crystal motion in a solution isiknown to affect
crystal growth in general and to impede the development of certain crystal faces*.
.A brief summary of the results obtained in investigations of the crystal rotation
effect on the rowth of monocrystals is presented here. Them study irrrolved

rotational velocities which differ for the crystals of different salts. The
authors explain the appearance of the "parasite" crystals and the difference in tho:~,
..crystal growth maxima for various substances by the development of 3emi-ordered
'layers on the crystal surfaces, which foster the formation of the molecular groups:1
.;and their transformation into the more complete crystalline forma. These blocks
tend to detach'themsel-wes from the surface layers under the aotion of hydraulic and!
:centrifugal forces o They continue their growth while floating and become'the
inuclei of the parasite crystal3e At moderate rotation velocities the speed of the
diffusion growth of the surface layer prevails over the rate of the block detach-
ment. This activity proceeds up to a certain maximum rotation Velocitys above
J. :)which the reverse action takes place,, and the rate of crystal growth begins to
ideclins. "The authors express their gratitude to L, N, Matusevich for his valuable
advice** Oris. art. bass 2 figurese

ABSTRACT: A study is made of an electrotensiometric method for the investiga-
tion of volume str(-,s and strain states of parts and elements manufactured from i
isotropic plastics. The method involves a testing device consilsting of six resist-
ance transducers capable of providing results which are easily applicable ford
further determinations. This experimental and theoretical method will permit
determination of the main stresses and deformations as well as their directions
in internal points of the parts and elements made of plastic, as well as the nature
of deformation ani stress distribution in any cross-section of',the part. Moreover,;

it is possible to measure deformations caused by static and dynamic I ads and to
carry out continuous laboratory and production-line measurements using trans-
duc ers which are built in within the plastic parts; the tranadlic ers are in a neal ly-
airtight medium and are protected against mechanical damage. S. Gavrilova.

Title' : Stddy of fte Physical Characteristics of an Atomic Electric Station Reacior
Orig Pub : Atom. energiya, 1956, No 2, 3-10
Abstract : A graphite-vateriesearch reactor, in which the cell construction, was nearly
equal to the cell of the reactor of an atomic electric w6ntion, was built to
check the calculation results for the letter reactor. Therebearch reactor
was a cylinder 190 cm high and 260 cm in diameter. The fission mater'itil.used
was uranium protoxide and oxide with lq U235enrichwnt. The critical mass
(liar) was 6.3 kg U235,-which was in good agreement Vith the calculated value
(11cj - 5.35 -- 7.4 kg V235) calculated with a proce4ure previously checked
experimentally only with a uranium-grapbite lattice,with'a small content.of.
staJI and water. The critical mass was calculated for the reactor ar them
atomic electric station for two cases: with an without water in the wcrking
channels. The results obtained are in good agreement with the calculdtione.
Experivients were made on the calibration of boron rods and on the de-
termination of the excess reactivity. The dependence of the effectiveness of the,

absorbing I-oron rod on the depth of its insertion in the reactor in in-'.-
vestigated. Experiments on the determination of the controlling ability
of the rod have eatablished that the surrounding rods affect strongly the
absorbing tbility of the rod. A study of the charocter ',of the cur-;d for the
decrease ir power with time under scram conditions~vas 44e to determine the
operating time of the scram rods.
A mechanical neutron selector was used to study the r4utron spectrum, and
the distribution of the thermal neutrons was found to be in good agreement
with the tbeoretical curve wten the effective temperature of the neutron gas
was assumed to be approximately 100o higher than the temperature of tbe~core.
The temperature of the neutron gas was then determined vith the vid~of
boron rods, and good agreement was obtained here with thO results of the
measurements made with the selector. The curves of the dadmium Satios
versus the reactor radius showed that 8.3% of the fissions in ~2 5 occur
in the region above the cadmium.
