The authors arrived at the following conclusions: The resolution of the
spectrometer is 0.5 Mev Cor soft radiation and somewhat less for hard
radiation. The theoretical values of the photoelectric affect cross
section of the NaI(Tl) crystal can be used for determining the efficiency
of the spectrometer for r-lines which satisfy the condition
'Q'100'/'-' 40-5-1001%/(2E + 0-5). In this case the error is approximately
1&lo. There are 3 figures, 2 tables, and 4 referencest 2 Soviet and 2
non-Soviet.

JOSTRACT: The authors report the results of optical measurements made by a procedure
~.,ey developed and describcd elsewhere (Optika i spek-4troskopiya v. 1.8, no. 4, 1965 find
earlier) for producing turbid media whose parameters can be varied and which are suit-
able for optical scattering measurements. The measurements were made in a small cell
I with a light bean, of 3.14 cm2 area and divergence angle smaller than 10, using an end-
window photomultiplier (FE-U-25) capable of measuring the illiunination in varioua see-
tions of the medium, in a radial direction relative to the beam propagation directicn.
The parameters varied were the photon survival probability (A), the extinction coeffi-
cient, (e), and the longitudinal and radial coordinates of the observation point (-rh
and Tr). 11V is shown that for equal values Of Th, the amount of radially scattered
radiation decreases with decreasing A. The extinction coefficient bmo an important
influence an the shape of the beam-spreading curve at small qj and is of no importance

ABSTRACT: Thez. present paper continues a series of investigat ions of the
ca"alytic reactions of multiatomic alcohols carried oat at
the kafedra organicheskoy khimii LV'U (Chair of Or&anic Ci-,e-
mistry of the LGJ). Copper and nickel alur-iinum silicate
Cu.Al 20 3' Si02 (1) and NiO.Al031 $i02 (2) served as catalysts.
A vertical electric furnace with a q~.mrtz tube with oatal,',st
inside was the catalysis device. Tests were carried oat at
250, 279, 500, and 3200 in catalyst 1. The condensate was
fractJ.unsted on an ordinary stripping tower after a pre-di-
stillation. The data on the products obtained are compiled
in table 1. a-Mlethyl levulin aldchyde- (it has hitherto not
been described in publications), metl-.ql glyoxal propionic al-
dehyde, pentadione-2,3, propionic acid, pyrotartaric acid,

The se-oaration of the catalyzate was carried out in the same
way as in catalyst 1. Table 2 shows the data concerned. For
the purpose of identifying a-methyl levulin aldehyde -the in-fra-
red spectra of diacetyl and acetyl acetone were taken as co;.,i-
parative spectra and compared with tho spectrum of the frac-
tion containing a-methyl levtilin aldehyde. The figure shows
the infrared spectrum of a-Liethyl levulin eldehyde. On the
basis of the character of the products obtained the folluring
tran!3fo_-.,.iation of propane diol is assumed: dehydrogenation
and dehydration to methyl glyoxal and proplonic ald-Ayde forming
as the main substance, and further condr-n2ation of the latt~_r.
It was not possible to detect condensation products f:roQ two
molecules propionic aldEhyde nor froa two molecules u-Dt11Yl
glyoxal. Decarbonylation takes place In tho process of conden-
sation. The products CH 3COCH2CH2CH 3 and pt:.ntadione-2,3, arc a
confirmation thereof. Further investigations will be necc-ssar,,jr

ABSTRACT Several authors investigate the scattering of nucleons by nuclei by
means of a model with the help of which thenucleuA is represented in
form of a nucleon gas with T - 0. With this modalp however, also the
scattering of other particles by nuclei can be studied. By using the
thus obtained results orientation would be possible on the occasion
of the avaluation, of the effects of the scattering of pions and K-me-
sons which are connected with the PAULI principle. A particle 1 with
the mass ml and the momentum k is assumedto impinge on to a FERMI gas
of particles 2 with the mass m and the momenta -p8.(o
