ABSTRACT: An.experimerktv4 study completed by the authors seems to refute the
generally accepted conqodfi of the biosynthesis of chlorophyll in the dark by only
some algae and young.sprouts of Gymenospermae.' Some previous studies of other authorl
are reviewed and discussed vhichmeV hint at the possibility. of chlorophyll biosynthesis
in the dark by Angiospermae. The present study consisted of growing Tradescantia
shoots in the dark for a long period (1 1/2-2 months). The results 'indicated that
the elongated and etiolated stem of the plant contained no chlorophyll; however, the
leaves newly formed on this stem were green and contained chloroplasts. These chloro-
plasts were smaller in size, but more nufnerous than those of the control plant. The
experiment confirmed that at least one Angiospermae plant is capable of producing
chlorophyll in the dark. Orig. art. has: 3 figures and 1 table. [BN1

ABSTRACT: The authors determine the applicability of T. P.
Viaryutin's method (Tr. NIU, GUGMS, 1941, Ser 5, Nr':.l)
to forecast fluctuations in the level of the Gulfs of
Finland and of Riga. These fluctuations are caused
by the water being driven offshore and onshore.

ABhRACT: The author visited that country in October 1957, Upon
invitation of the Council of Geographic Societies of Yugoslavia.
He acquainted hims~lfwith the organization of higher
geographical education and with the state of:,geographioal
science i~nd entered into personal relations with Yugoslav
scientists. The author made extensive travels and became
acquainted with various regions of that country. The Yugoslav
Federation consists of 6 republics each of which has its
geographical society. The council of these societies has a
coordinating function. These societies comprise 120 to 600
members, consisting mainly of teachers from secondary schools,
Card 1/2 scientists, and professors from universities, The country has
kith the Geographers of Yugoslavia 30-58-3-16/45
3 independent Academies of Science: in Serbia, Croatia, and
Slovenia; the state ot their geographical science is low..
The main work in the field of geography is performed at the
universities where there are professorial chairs for
geography. The investigation of individual geographical
problems is well organized. Many Yugoslav scientists keep to
the idea of a uniform geography which identifies the rules
governing both society and nature. The Yugoslav scientists are
very much interested in the works of their Soviet oolleaguas
and obtain much printed publications from them. The author
proposes common investigations by the scientists of the two
countries.
