TITLE: On the theory of the inertial-viscous boundary layer in a two-dimensional
model of ocean currents [The paper was presented at the International Symposium

TOPIC TAGS: ocean current, ocean dynamics, boundary layer flow
ABSTRACT: The structure of the inertially-viscous boundary layer in a two-dimensio
al model of ocean currents is studied; the dependence of the boundary layer on the
Reynolds number, R, and on the total flow of the boundary layer, g(y), are consider
The behavior of the boundary layer around g' = 0 and for large values of R is ex-
amined. The structure of the boundary layer around g - 0 and g' - 0 is analyzed in
order to obtain a critical value of the Reynolds number, R er' A hypothesis on' the
origin of the boundary'layor properties around g - 0, g' < 0, and R > R cr is stated

described. It is found that an inertially-viscous boundary layer cannot exist in
the region g' < 0 for R >> 1. From the above the Sverdrup relationship is not valid
for open ocean at g' < 0 and R Y> 1. In conclusion, the author expresses his
gratitude to A. H. Win for useful discussions which greatly facilitated the ful-
fillment of this work. Orig. art. has: 70 formulas and 11 figures.

PURPOSE: The book is intended for chemists, science historians, and
bibliograpbers concerned with chem-'stry and related subjects.
COVERAGE: The book consists of three sections. Section I contains
1171 references in alphabetical order; Section II contains
222 references consisting of "Notes, Abstracts., Reviews and a

'Bibliography"; Section III contains materials on the history
of chemistry and chemical technology in the USSR and abroad.
Annotations follow most of the papers mentioned.*In all, about
2,500 titles In this field were published by the Academy of
Sciences in 1936-1937. The references included by the compiler
were published not only in chemical periodicals but also in
publications concerned with geology, agriculture, physics, and
other fields. These were selected because a certain aspect of
the study was concerned with a chemical process or because
the investigation was interpreted from the point of view of
chemistry, thus making it possible for chemists to get
acquainted with the literature outside their field of
specialization. No personalities are mentioned. An extensive
list of source materials is given.
