TITLE: Determination of the Sources of Contamination of Ball-Bearing
Steel With the Aid of Radioactive Isotopes (Opredeleniye

PERIODICAL: V sb. : Primeneniye radioaktivn. izotopov v chernoy metal-

ABSTRACT: Methods of radiometering and radiography were employed in
an investigation of the effect of the refractory brick (RB), used
in the lining of the siphon and in the spout of the ladle, on the
contamination of the ball-bearing steel with non-metallic inclusions
(NMI). Experimental - heats ': were performed in electric arc-
furnaces of 30-40 t capacity from which 1300 kg ingots were poured.
Eleven ~ heats - were poured through the channel lined with experi-
mental RB, 6 were poured by means of a ladle lined with experi-
mental RB, and Z9 ingots were poured by means of a siphon lined
with the experimental RB. The isotope Ca45 (in the form of a
Card 1/2 water solution of CaCI7) was introduced into the material, from

which the RB was to be made, in such amounts as to produce
400-500 m curie of radioactivity per ton of finished product.
Samples of metal from which the non-metallic inclu-,ions (NMI)
were to be extracted by electrolytic means were removed from
the ladle by a special dipper, as well as from finished stock of
100 mm square section. The radioactivity of the samples of
NMI was measured by the thin-layer method, and radiographic
prints were taken from longitudinal samples of the finished stock
and from the samples which had been subjected to metallographic
inspection. It was found that the extracted NMI contained 0:-.0.44.,
percent of NMI from the RB of the ladle, 0-0.8 percent frorn'the
RB of the siphon, and no NMI from the RB of the channel. The
radiometric data were confirmed by the radiographs of the
samples; with 54,000 mm2 of total area of micro-ections, the
area of the uncovered NMI comprised 0.0254 mm?- (5-JO-5 percent).
A comparison of the metallographic analysis with the radiographic
data indicated that the cast metal contained globular NMI 40-100 a
in diameter composed of complex silicaies, and that the rolled
metal contained non--uniformly distributed globular NMI (10,~.L in
diameter) and elongated NMI compo.,;ed of .6licate glasses.

TITLE: The influence of f-apping slag on the contamination of

TEXT: This investigation was carried out in order to clarify the-
role of tapping slag in the formation of non-metallic inclusions
and to study the nature of inclusions containing slag. lbe,
investigation was done on a ball bearing steel smelted in a
40 kg laboratory and a 40 t industrial arc furnace, using
radioactive calcium. Ozid:e of Ca 45 was carefully mixed with at
small amount of the slag forming materials (300 to 500 mCurie per
ton of slag) placed into a tin which was introduced into the-
furnace 20 to 30 minutes before tapping. After carefully
stirring for 2 to 3 minutes before tapping, samples of slag were
collected from 5 or 6 different spots-. The mean activity of these
slag samples was then used in calculating the amount of slag in
non-metallic inclusions. The metal was studied-in cast, forged
and rolled states. Non-metallic inclusions were separated

electrolytically. The weight of dissolved metal was 100 to 200g
and the weight of inclusions separated'10 to 20 mg. After
determining the radioactivity of inclusions they were spectro-
scopically and petrographically analysed. The evaluation of the
degree-of steel contamination by the largest inclusion in a
6pecimen waa,,done according to roCT801-47 (GOST 801-47) for
semi-brittle'and according to the 3HVilitl (ENIIP) scale for
globular inclusions;. It was found that the tapping slag could be
a substantial source of contamination of steel by coarse non-
metallic inclusions, The amount of slag in the incluaions
separated varied from 0 to 25%, but in the majority of specimens
it did not exceed 1%. With an increasing proportion of slag in
the non-metallic inclusions, contamination of the metal by semi-
brittle inclusions increases. Contamination by globular
inclusions increases with an increasing degree of oxidation of slag.
The extraneous inclusions were mainly silicates of variable shapes
and composition, consisting of various particles which interacted-
with each other, or represented a mechanical mixture. The
extraneous inclusions were randomly distributed'in the body of the
Ingots. It Is concluded that in order to attain an effective

ABSTRACT: The authors describe various communication channels for data transmission in
the Soviet Union and discuss their reliability. The development of a large network of
information processing and computng centers in the Soviet Union has led to the utili-
zation of existing and new communication channels for the transmission of digital data.
The reliability requirements for such transmission are much more stringent than for the
transmission of verbal data since the digital numerical information is not naturally
redundant. The following communication links are used at present: municipal automatic
telephone networks, automatic teletype networks, semi-automatic and automatic inter-
city telephone networks, voice frequency-carrier telegraph links, and supersonic

telegraphy. An increase in transmission speed can be achieved either through the use
of parallel telegraph-channels or through telephone communication links which have a
greater bandwidth. When audio-carrier telegraph is used, the speed of transmission is
comparable to the speed of information recording on a punched tape or cards. The in-
formation received in this manner is first recorded on an intermediate medium (punched
or magnetic tape) and then fed into the computer at a much higher speed. Various
transmission channels were evaluated for their reliability using standard test informa
tion blocks consisting of 1000 to 2000 digits in the International Code No. 2 and
various combinations of correcting codes 112 out of 5" and "3 out of 5". The average
errors for various communication modes were as follows: vuice frequency carrier tele-
graph (underground cable)-l in 16,000; voice frequency carrier telegraph (overhead
line)-l in 14,600; supersonic telegraph (overhead line)-l in 10,060. The authors in-
clude the tables of the test results for the individual communication lines, as well a
the calculations of statistical error probabilities. Orig. art. has: 4 figures and 3

TITLE: The distribution of the cations in the spinel CuMn204

TEXT: The crystal structure of the spinel CuMn204 was
determined by X-ray diffraction methods using both photographic
and ionization chamber methods. Fe radiation was used for cell
size'determination and Mo for intensity measurements. Work by
A.P.B.Sinha et al (J. Phys. Chem., v.62, no.2, 1958, 191-194) did
not agree with earlier work by the present authors as to the degree
of inverseness. Sinha found the spinel to be normal (X = 0) and
measured the 0 parameter as u = 0.392. Zaslavskiy gave
~u = 0.375 with the spinel half-inverse. It has now been found
th,?t' X may be between 0.67 and 1.0 . These two possibilities,
a statistical distribution of the two kinds of atoms between the
8(a) and 16(d) positions and full inverseness, are hardly to be
distinguished. It was confirmed that u = 0.375 (or 0 250 with
different origin). Three dimensional line syntheses along [IIIJ
were constructed and the p reak heights were carefully adjusted.

ABSTRAM The authors determined the kinetics between hydrogen peroxide
and potassium iodide in the presence of iron salts in HC1-
and H2SO -solutions. The investigation of the kinetics of
this rea4tion was performed by the optical method. The photo-
metric investigations were performed on a universal photo-
meter of the type,~M with green filter and at 533 pu and
19-200C and 21-22 00. The inclination between the tangent
angle and the abscissa of the iron-concentration is propor-
tional to the reaction velocity.

A13STRACT: The reactions mentioned in the title concerning mono and bi-
valent cations of the metals yith ethylene diamine tetra-
acetate, are characterized by relatively low thermal effects
and by considerable positive entropy changes (Refs 1,2). Thus,
the entropy changes in these reactions play an important role
and to a high degree determine the stability of the metal
complexonates in the solutions* There are, however, no reliable
data on the entropy changes in the affiliation reaction of
the proton to the anions of the complexons as well as in the
reactions of the complexonate formation of the trivd:lefit metals.
As for the calculation of the entropy changes besides data
on the equilibria also exact data on the enthalpy change during

calorimetrically the thermal effects of the mentioned reactions
under the participation of complexons. For this purpose the
authors decided to determine by direct calorimetric measure-
ments the reaction heat in the addition of the trotons to the
anions of ethylene diamine tetraacetate and of 6xamethylene
diamine tetraacetate, as well as the formation heat of the
combination of aluminum with the former acetate and of calcium
with the latter. The hexamethylene diamine tetra acetic acid
was synthesized at the IREA (Institut khimicheskikh reaktivov
Institute for Chemical Reagents) and supplied by Professor
R. Po Lastovskiy. The results obtained are given in tables
1-5, 7, 8* Data concerning-the change of the heat content and
of the entropy in the dissociation of the ethylene diamine
tetraacetic acid and of hexamethylene diamine tetraacetic
acid were obtained. With the former acid the entropy in the
dissociation of the acid is changed under the separation of
the two last protons Ord and 4th step of dissociation) by a
much higher absolute value than is the case with the first two
protons. With the last mentioned acid it may be assumed that
the entropy in the corresponding dissociation is changed in

changes of enthalpy and entropy in the formation of the
aluminum complex with the ethylene diamine tetras-cetic acid

tetraacetic acid are determined. The factors were revealed
which determine the value of the entropy change in the re-

ABSTRACT: The influence of.the ionic strength in the change of the
entropy and-heat content during the uumplex forming reactions
of calcium and nickel was investigated by ethylenediamine
tetraacetic acido The complex formation proceeds quantitatively
at PH 10-11 and is shown in the following equations:
Ca2+ + EDTA4- CaEDTA 2- M
Ni 2+ + EDTA4" NiEDTA2 (2)
.The change of the ionic strength from 0.06 to 1.58 brings
about a considerable change of -~~ H and ec~. Z whereas the entropy
change,:nLS almost remains constant. It was found that at low

ABSTRACT: This paper is a.continuation of previous investigations (Refs
1,2). Co.polymers of the vinyl chloride (A) with methyl-(B), n-
butyl-(C), and n-oatylacrylate (D) were obtained and their
composition and properties -were determined. Some quantitative
rules governing the reaction properties of the investigated
acrylic and methacrylic esters.were found. Corresponding data
were also obtained for the copolymers of (A) with vinyl.benzoa
(E) (the latter was produced by V. S. Etlis, just as (D)). At
a certain ratio of the components these products have better
elasticity properties than polyvinyl chloride. The rate of
polymerization was determined dilatometrically in a dichloro-

copolymerization constants were -obtained graphically according
to an equation by L. M. Ginain, A. D. Abkin and S. S. Medvedev
(Ref 7). The copolymers of (A) with methaerylates are complete
soluble in cyclohexane, in contrast to those with (E). The co-
polymerization velocity as well as the viscosity of the re-
action products are considerably lower with methacrylates than
with acrylates, which fact is -explained by the effect of the
methyl group in the-a-position. The copolymerization constants
for (A) with (B,C,D, and E) obtained at 450 are the following:
a - 0.02, P - 15; a - 0-051 P - 13.5; a - 0-04, P = 14.0;
a = 0.72 and 0 - 0.28. The fact that at (E) 0< 1 is explained
by the difference of the electron density of the double bond
C=G. The reactivities of (A) and (E) are rather close to each
other, and the-copolymerization yiel-ds.rather homogeneous
products which at a ratio of (A) - (E) = 0.72 : 0.28 form an
aceotropic mixture. The macromolecules of the copolymers (A)
--wi-th (B,CPD) mainly consist of long methacryl chains and short
vinyl chloride chains. In the copolymerization products of
(A) and (E) at equimolecular ratios an arranged distribution c

TI M The Reaming of Apertures in-Caprone Articles
PERIODIbAL: Stanki i Instrument, 1960, No. 6, P. 38
TEXT: The author describes a reamer for the machining of apertures of
caprone parts which, owing to deformations during the pressing process. or -because
of inaccurate casting, have to be given the right geometric shape a6d 31eaessaa7
accuracy to size. The reamer has a front angle 200, a rear angle 0~ -, 8. an
angle0of inclination of the spiral grooves to - and a partition cone. angle
I - 0 491. It is made of VIOA (U10A) grade steel, which makes it possible to
give the cutting edge a more pointed shape than this could be done with high-speed
steel or hard alloys. Dry.machining takes place at a cutting speed -of 16.2 %/mln
with manual feed. The reaming allowance should be 0.08-0.2 mm on the diameter.
Reaming under the mentioned conditions results in a 2nd-class precision with
highly polished surface. The author points out that,.since not only plastic
deformations but also elastic deformations are wising during the machining of
caprone, the machined.aperture will-be somewhat smaller in diameter than that of
the reamer, which makes it necessary to choose the reamer diameter somwhat larger
than the maximum diameter of aperture, There are 2 diagrams.
