ABSTRACT: Tc study the phynicochemical interaction between rhenium and
praseodymium, alloys of the tw~ metals were prepared and subjected to
x ray and microstructural analyses in the cast form and after vacuum an
nealing at 12000C for 200 hr. PrRe2 metallic compounds containing ap-
proximately 66.67 at 1; Re were formed. Powder diagrams of cast samples
quenched at a temperature close to the melting point showed a system of
lines characteristic of MgCuZ-type Laves phases with a cubic crystal laq~_
tice. The lattice parameter of the high temperature modification of

the Laves phases type (02) was established in all cases. A polymorphous trans-
formation of the compound PrRe2, whose high-temperature modification has an MgCu2-
type cubic structure and the low-temperature modification has an MgZn2-type hexagonal
structure, was identified. The formation of Laves phases of various structures (cu-
bic or hexagonal) should apparently be attributed both to the change in the valence
of the B element in AB2-tYPe compounds and to the change in the valence of the A ele

ABSTRACT: A phase diagram of the scandium-rhenium system (Fig. 1) hael
'been plotted on the basis of data obtained by physicochemical analysis
of 13 alloys containing 0 to 100% rhenium, melted from sintered 99.98%-
pur rhenium and distilled 99.4-99.6%-pure scandium. The diagram is
of the peritectic type with two intermetallic compounds, ScRs2 and
Sc5RQ24, and limited solubility of components. The solubility of Sc in Re is
approximately 2% Sc at peritectic temperature and decreases insignifi-
cantly at lower tempmturei, The Sc5Re24 compound has a cubic lattice
with a constant a a . 448 and a microhardness of 1225 kg/mU2. The
ScRe2 compound of the Laves type has a hexagonal, close-packed lattice

able stresses. The crystals contained 104 cm-2 dislocations In the
initial state. The dislocations were disclosed by selective etching..
The thermoelastic stresses were measured by a polarization-optical
method. Measurements of the residual stresses In the samples show
that even for the small sizes ( - 3 x 5 x 20 mm) and low temperatures)
the thermoelastic stresses that can arise exceed the elastic limit
and cause motion and multiplication of dislocations. The authors

.Vitamin Bl (thiamine) was administered daily, for
'310 days, parenterally to 30 children between 6 and
11 months of age in various stages of dystrophy. The
dose was between 2.5 and 3 milligrams. After 3d in-
jection of thiamine positive, effects on the gastric

secretion were noted, although the general condition
of the children showed only slight improvement. Cor-
rection in peptic activity was further noted after
thm 6th injection. It seem that the course of treat
ment for dystrophy in children, who are already free
from causes that produce the illness, should consist
of 6 injections of vitamin B, .

lenium and tellurium in in-,;ermediate products of the lead ain-Fline
industry. Germanium is spectrographically determined by injection of powder specimens
into an a-c arc discharge. The spectroscopic buffer for determination of more than
0.001% Ge is carbon powder containing 5% Bi(NO3)3 as an internal standard. The
analytical line pair is Ge 269-13 mp-Bi 260.96 mp. For determining higher concen-
trations of germanium (above 0.1%), use in 2kade of the Ge 258-91 mu-Bi 280.96 mp or
Ge 274.o4 mp-Bi 280.96 mv line. A buffer consisting of a mixture of quartz and sulfur

was used for determining traces of germanium of the order of I part in 100,000 in slags
and mattes. The sensitivity of germanium determination with respect to the Ge 303-90
mo line is 10-4% in this case with a relative error of about 15%. Commercial solutions
are analyzed by electrode saturation. The relative mean square error is 9% with this
method. Indium, thallium, gallium, and germanium are simultaneously determined by
pouring the solutions to be analyzed into a Bocket'in a special copper electrode and
then drying the electrode so that the solution adheres to the surface. The*advantage
of this method over the saturation of carbon electrodes lies in the possibility of
using the sensitive long-vave lines located in the region of cyanogen bands: in 410.18
mu, Ga 417.2 mV and TI 377.5T mu. This method gives a relative error of 9%. Methods
are discussed for determination of rare elements in zinc and lead ores with a sensiti-
vity of at least 10 4% using spectrographic analysis with &-buffer solution of sodium
