ABSTRACT: The displacement and stress functions are determined for an aniso!ropic oyllnde
of elliptical cross section with an initial slight deflection of the axis, under a transverse force.
Differential equations for the displacement and stress functions are derived and the correspond-
ing boundary conditions are established, Particular solutlons of the differential equations are
obtained. Or1g. art. has: 30 formulas.

TITLE: On a method of approximating a random vector function
SOURCE: Kibernetika, no. 5, 1966, 73-74
TOPIC TAGS: vector function, mathematic matrix, approximation, automatic control design
ABSTRACT: The proposed method makes it possible to construct self-adaptive and learnilg
automatic control systems by means of the inverse Jacobian technique in cases where the re-
lations linking the input and output parameters of a system are unknown. The inverse Jacoblan
technique reduces to finding the control actions exerted on the input of the system according to
the discrepancies at the system's output, on utilizing the reciprocal matrix of partial deriva-
tives. Thus the problem Is that of finding this matrix according to the available statistics --
the information on the system. Real statistics, which is used to find the inverse Jacobian at
some point of the region, contains a substantial variation in the parameters of the system and
hence also in the partial derivatives. The unknown relations are approximated by a Taylor se-

The matrix of derivatives is found with the aid of passive experimental data. The sampling
is performed in such a manner that all the experimental findings are taken from the approxi-
mated rQion in the neighborhood of the point at which the coefficients a ij are found, so that
the mathematical expectation of the sample would tend toward the vector x 0* By virtue of the
random nature of the vector y a ariance may be said to exist between the real sought value of
V) for a sample of volume N. This variance will be minimal

for the values of a , which correspond to equation (2), 1. e. for the sought values of coeffi-
cients. Hence, these values may be found from the condition of the minimization of variance

,vith respect to the coefficients aii this may be written in matrix form as CA = B, A = C B.
The matrix C is such that, when determining all the coefficients a ij whIose number equals
nm, a linear system of m-order equations must be solved n times. Thus the Jacobian for
systems with incomplete information may be found. Orig. art. has: 8 formulas

PFRIODICAL: Kristallografiya, v-7, no.3, 1962, 412-1117
TEXT: By means of the invariants of the tonsor which determines
the propagation of elastic waves in crystals, the invariant
parameters of the modulus of elasticity tensor can be calculated
using the measured velocities of pulse propagation in various
directions. A method is proposed for determining the
parameters of crystals of the tetragonal classes 4,71i, 4:m
and the trigonal classes 3J;. The paper is cancerned with
calculational improvements. Professor F.I.Fedorov is thanked

phase velocities of the two elastic waves coincide have been set up
and studied. In general, three elastic waves (two transverse,
one longitudinal) with different velocities can be propagated in
any dirfiction. Directions where two of these phase velocities
coincide can be called acoustic axes. The-positions of the
acoustic axes, where they do not coincide 'with the crystallographic
symmetry axes, are of interest. All symmetries but triclinic are
considered here. In the monoclinic system there may be 16 a3ces
although this number is probably never realized. The orthorhombic
system may have up to III but an analysis given by K,S.Aleksandrov

symmetry or in the Planes normal to the axes of symmetry or in
Plancs e(I'livalent to them as regards elastic properties. In the
tetragonal c'ase, besides the above, axes may lie in planes normal
to the axis of highast order. The directions of the acoustic
axes in hexagonal crystals form a cone which may be expanded into
a Plane or contracted to a symmetry axis. In the cubic case
the acoustic axes coincide with the axes of the 3rd and 4th order
and there are therefore 7 in all. Acknowledgments are expressed

Mixing of electro4netic waves by a nonlinear crystal

ABSTRACT: The authors calculate the coefficients of conversion of radiation in dif-
ferent cases of mixing of light waves in KDP and ADP single crystals. The light
waves have different frequenciesp and are normally incident. Expressions are given
for the conversion coefficient, for the transmission coefficients of the ordinary
and extraordinary components of the incident waves, and for the dependence of a
function proportional to the conversion coefficient on the divergence of the beam
and on the thiclmess of the crystal. A table of the results shows that the trans-
formation coefficient for the emission at the difference frequency Is smaller than
for the emission at the nun frequency. The main reason is that the intensity of the
transformed radiation is proportional to the square of the freq=ncy. Orig. art.
