TITLE: Investigation of dynamics of pressure changes In gas containing sys-

TEXT- The author considers the process of pressure changes of a perfect
inertia-free gas in systems composed of chambers, tubes and valves, under an as-
sumption that all resistances are concentrated in the valves and do not depend
on frequency of pressure changes. Pressure drops in the valves may be both sub-
critical and transcritical. The main investigation method is the operator metho(%
which is applicable to the extent that mainly small changes of the steady condi-
tions are considered and all equations are linearized. However, in the isother-
mal case, at the stepped change of the gas inflow, the author Integrates the

Abstract : All children candidates for antibiotic therapy are first
carefully screened for past allergic reactions of any type, including
here all asthma, eczema, even dermatophytoses; all such patients have
first 2 skin tests with suitable precautions, and even if these tests
are negative antibiotic therapy is oral only for these patients. In
general antibiotics are given only when no other comparably effective
drugs are available, and patients are carefully observed. No clinical
data.

TITLE. Tubular Surfaces with Longitudinal Ribbing for
Regenerators and water Heaters of Gas-turbine. Sets
PERIODICAL- Energomashinostroyeniyl. 190V No. 1, pp. 5.8
TEXT. FGr gas-turbine regenerators,, smooth-tubed heat
exchangers have two important disadvantages the entire
heat-exchange surface is mechanically loaded, and there is
no way of compensating for the different rates of heat
transfer from the inner and outer surface3 Accordingly,
except under the moA favourable condittons, smooLih-tubed
heat exchangers are heavy and cumbersome- The tvibes need
ribbing, particularly on the gas sidpl to itterease tht~ rate

makes them stronger, so that with relati-ely small inct-ease

gas speeds, The ribbing is not particularly subject to

Accordingly, the Khar4kov Turbine Works was re~oriimended to

Simultaneously, the Inatitut elektrosvarki imeni Ye,O,Patona
AN UkrSSR (Electric Welding Institute imeni Ye.O. Paton of
the AS Ukrainian SSR) developed automatic equipment for
manufacturing longitudinally-ribbed tubes by welding the ribs
to the plain tubes. Aluminium tubes may be made by pressing
or drawing from molten metal.
Heat-transfer investigations for a single ribbed tube were
made in an open-circuit wind tunnel of cylindrical shape,
a sketch of which is given in Fig. 2c
In the test rig the tube consisted of measuring: stabilising,
experimental and tail-end sections. Compressed air was
obtained from a compressor and could be passed at rates fiom
5 to 30 m/sec. The seamless tubes and ribs were made of
steel, grade 20, The tubes were ele(Arically heated and the
power input measured. The instrumentation and experimental
procedures are described. The accuracy of the experiments
depends very much on the correct measurement of the mean

temperature of the tube surface and so particular attention must
be paid to this point, An assessment of' the azcuracy of
determination of the heat-transfer coefficient including heat
lost by radiation showed that the maximum relative error is
Heat-transfer coefficients were determined and for comparison
and generalisation the results were expressed as relationships
between the Nusselt and Reynolds criteria, the resistance
being also plotted as a function of the Reynolds number. The
tube dimensions are tabulated, The tests were made with
air-flow rates of 7 - 26 m/sec , which corresponds to Revnolds
number range of' 3 000 to 20 000 with i !empvrature dift'Prence,
of 30 - 75 OC and with the sl)Gcific therinal, loading in the
range 11 000 to 36 000 kcal/m-hour.,
Experimental heat--transfer results are pIGtted in Figs, 3

as the ratio of length to equivalent diameter ia decreased,
For all tubes investigated the heat--transfer results are
satisfactorily described by expression (1),
Resistance tests were made under it4othpriwil conditions., The
test results plotted in Fig. 5 show that within the limits of
experimental error thejesistance follows the usual relation-
ship for smooth tubes given by expression (3),. Comparison
between ribbed and smooth tubes shows that. the ribbed tubes
have considerable advantages in weight., volume and heat--
transfer characteristics, This is parti-:ularly noticeable
when the thermal resistance of the heat-transfer medium
flowing within the tube is small compared with the resistance
to gas flowing over the outside of the ril)bed surface,,
4~omparative data were obtained by building up bundles of tube3,
3ome smooth with longitudinal gas flow, others smooth with
cross-flow of gas, and longitudinally-rxbi)ed tubes with gas
flowing along the ribbing. In each tasc 'the b,,Andles were made

equal in volume and in active section for passage of gas.
The comparison is made in Fig. 6 and considering as unity
the heat.-transfer coefficient of smooth t,.ibes with long itudina I
flow, smooth tubes with a cross-flow have a -coefficient of 1.2
and the long itikdina lly- ribbed tubes have a coefficient of 2.2.
In gas-turbine regenerators the longLtudirially-ribbed tubes
will not give all of' this improvement but the reduztion is less
when the heat-transfer coefficient from the air side is highs
Thus, even with the present :Ample form of ribbing on the gas
side it is necessary to interssify the hea-: -transfer proness on
the air side, A simple way is to raise the air c;p--~ed by
redusing the active section of th" tubt, with light inserts.
Internal ribbing could be used but woij1d 1:-e rather difilcult

v in 1. B. - PROBL. ENDOKR. 1956, 2/5 (72-82)
The ad-re-nocortical syndrome is distinguished by 3 main characteristic symptoms:
(1) sexual disorders, (2) metabolic disorders, (3) hypertonia. The sexual disorders
consiBt frequently of virilism, feminism being encountered more rarely. They
arise as the result of hypersecretion of androgenic or (considerably less frequently)
oestrogenic hormones. The metabolic disorders are reflected in adiposity of the
491/
trunk and abdomen with slender extremities. florid moon face% glycosuria and
result from overproduction of glucocorticoids. The hypertonia is connected with
increased production of mineral corticoids. The absence of hypertonia does not
exclude the adrenocortical syndrome. Three clinical forms are distinguished, de-
perding on the preponderance of the different symptoms. sexual, metabolic and
mixed (sexual-metabolic). The communication cites the principles of differential
diagnosis of adrenocortical syndrome and Itsenko-Cushing's disease, virilizing
ovariantumours, precocious puberty and physical maldevelopment of other aetiology.
Prompt surgical intervention in cases of adrenocortical tumours leads to recovdry
in many patients. (S)
