According to preliminary,calculations the joint in-
stitute will have a staff of 600 to 1,000 profes-,
sors-aad instructors, scientific workers and engi-:

300 to.500 workmen other than students. The total
number will thus be between 1,300 and 2,100 per-
sons, but including the.' students - 3,500 to 5,000
persons. Such a center will require considerable
means, which should easily justify itself by the

ABSTRACT: The effect of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties of
fcrritic-pearlitic steels and the r welded joirgs has been investigated.. Specimens
of annealed and tempered 25Kh2MFA1 and 12Kh2MFA~chromium-molvbdentim-vanadium steela
with 0.2% and 04% C, respectively I were irradiated at 80-305C with integratedy,*,
ne'utron fluxes of 2.8 x 1017-7.2 x .109 n/cm2 (35% of neutrons with energy > 1)
Mechanical tests of both steels and of 12Kh2MFA steel welds showed that ne ron
irradiation increases atr -tousthness?

not as much as in 25W)Llsteel or 20 steel irradiated under the same. conditions.

ical properties of 12Kh2MFA steel welds obtained by manual or automatic*welding
with 12KhNF or l2KhM electrode wires undergo ractically the. same change as the
base metal when irradiated with a 7-1019'n/cm3 flux. Mowever, this thange is
slightly more pronounced in welds obtained with 12KIM Yire, owing to its lower
content of alloying elements. Increasing the tempeFa-ti re of irradiation decreasied
the radiation damage in all tested steels and diminished the degree of change in
mechanical properties, because the damage is partially or completely eliminated
by annealing. The highest temperatures at which no change of mechanical properties
of ferritic-pearlitic steels and their welds occurs under effect of irradiation
with neutron flux of the indicated intensity are 350-400C. At an irradiation
temperature of IOOC, none of the tected steels attains the highest values of-strength,
ductility, and toughness, ualess'the,flux of fast neutrons ig 1020 a/CM2. Orig.
