B104/B201 maximum of emission ranged between 4100 and 4500 A, which was in good agreement with the maximum of spectral sensitivity of the antimony cesium Dhotocathode of the multiplier. The recording efficiency may berepresented In the form F- = Ea F-PE V .Here, ECF denotes the scattering efficiency of neutrons of the detectorg Ep the bitting efficiency of protons (to hit a ZnS-Ag grain), and EV is the efficiency of the recording of scintillations. F- as a function of the neutron energy En, of the grain size and of the concentration Om of the scintillator, of thickness, etc., is discussed. Relation Ep = I - exp(-k(r)CVRn) is derived, where CV denotes the volume concentration of ZnS-Ag, R,, is the proton range for proton energy En, k(r) is dependent upon the energy distribution of the recoil protons and of the grain size of the scintillator. It is also obvious that there is an optimum thickness 10 of the detector, that is dependent upon the optical properties of the detector, on En, and the discrimination threshold. For a detector with Cm - 25 0 the optimum thickness is equal to 10 mm., when recording the neutrons from a Po(, + Be souice, and at a discrimination of gamma radiation with 3.104 quanta .cm-2sec . The author describes his own experience during weightlessness as he flew in -two cosmonaut training airplanes. One airplane was a specially adapted two-seat fighter with its rear cockpit equipped with physiological monitoring instruments. As the airplane flew a series of parabolic area the person in the rear cockpit was instructed to perform certain exercises developed for cosmonaut Card 1/2 L 21443-66 ACC NRt AP6007297 .training. Thus, during the second arc the author was instructed to loosen his shoulder straps and float. The author experienced a total. of 120 seconds of weightlessness in this airplane, Another labora- tory-airplane has a "floating, basin," a6d carries more than 10 person q; a crew of six, medical an'4 training personnel, movie operators$ - and future cosmonauts. The cosmonauts were trained to develop spatial orientation and to coordinate their movements with their eyes opened and closed. Vestibular exercises were carried out in revolving chairs. Izve3tiya vysshikh uchebnykh zavedeniy.%.Geodeziya i aerofotosl- yemka, 1959, Nr 4, pp 35 - 42 (USSR) ABSTRACT. In the observation of arbitrary but not casual processes in a number of cases it is possible to obtain measurement results in the form of casual time functions owing to the casval character of measurement errors. According to the measureme-at results which form the sum of the actual process and the casual error, the process can be fixed on a certain period of time in advance, which means that the problem of extrapolation which is connected with the filtraticn can be solved. The result, however, fundamentally depends on how the extrapolation is determined. It is suppos@d Card 1/4 that the measurement results of process x(t) in an interval On the Solution of the Extrapolation-Problem and Its SOV/154-59-4-4/17 Connection With the Root-mean-square Approximation _T @ t 0 are known; besides, it must be known that x(t) is a function from a certain and definite class of non-casual functions (e.g. from a linear combination of given functions Ti(t)l 92(t)i ... @r(t)). Value x*(T) which in extrapolated for a time period T in advance, is often determined (Refs 1,2,3) as such a linear combination of measured values of the process which shows no systematic errors and in which the dispersion x(T) - xl@(t) is reduced to a mini2ium. Besides that, the measure- ment results of a curve of the same siven class which show a better approximation to the measurement results in interval _74T Q can be approximated and the extrapolated value can be determined as a value of this approximated function in the re- spective future date. This shows in which cases the solutions of the extrapolation problem, obtained in such different ways, will correspond to each other. It is supposed that the measure- ment results y(t k) of a certain non-casual process are known in distinct points t (k- 0 1, ... n; -T @,_ T 0) . Formula (2 1 k I Card 2/4 is derived for x* (T) and formula (22) for the minimum dispersion On the Solution of the Extrapolation-Problem and Its SOV/154-59-1-4/17 It Connection With the Root-mean-square Approximation D of the extrapolation error. Various DOSSible cases are inves- tigated. A general solution of the extrapolation problem is obtained. This solution grants a minimum of dispersion for the error of a finite number of measurements y(t k) which contain errors with the given correlation function k(t ky t1). In arbi- trary linear combinations of linear independent fut@ctions T1(t)1 " Tr(t) the solution containf; no systematical errors. There it,was found that if the determinate of the correlation matrix J'k(t k' tl )11* is not equal to zero and the system of the proper functions of the operator k, which corresponds to correlation function k(t kjt1)' is a perfect one - the solution is plain and agrees with he value of function F(t). Function F(t) is the best root-mean-square approximation to the measure- ment results in the metric of space R 2' According to the assumption of a metric space L stands for space R 2* k(t k' tj) is a known correlation function. It is based on the change in half-width of the transmission band with light filters for visible light depending on the degree of homogeneity of the glass powder. The method described here is based on the theory of dispersion light filters suggested'by B. I. Stepanov and A. P. Prishivalko (Ref. 2). The authors assume that the light filter consists of individual independent elementary layers. Each of these-layers is subdivided into a great number of cells. Fig- 4 shows the results of measurement of the degree of homogeneity of SC -4 (ZB-4) glass, and its scrap rate on heat treatment. It has been found that in most electrovacuum glasses a Card 1/3 Device for Controlling the Degree of S/072/60/000/008/005/007/XX Glass Homogeneity B021/BO54 deterioration in homogeneity of more than 180-200 A increases the sqrap rate. TITLE: The effect of aluminum on the properties of deoxidized carbon steel PERIODICAL: Liteynoye proizvodstvo, no. 6, 1960, 43-47 TEXT.- The authors report on the difficulties encountered in the pro- duction of thi-n-wallea steel castings due to their inclination to cracks, depending on the casting conditionsand the presence of Al, 0, N, H etn.. in the metal. The final results depend on the deoxidation which alters some of the sulfides and nitrides and the quantity of nitrogen in steel. Methcds and results of four series of tests carried out to determine the effect of 0.5 - 4.2 kg/ton aluminum on the physical, mechanical and -.asting properties of mild electric steel are described. Tests were part of the GTaduation Pro- ject of V. B. Livshtts, student of the Moskovskiy institut stali (bloscow Steel Institute) carried out under the supervision of L. 1. Levi in coopera- tion with A. S. Murakhin, Z. P. Dubinskiy, D. T. Karaseva, E. P. Rink, 0. P. Levina, 0. K. Konenko-Gracheva, Yu. A-Chirvo, V. V. Parlin, S. I. Shalygin@ During test 1 the 25JL(2,5L) electric steel was melted by the conventional method and tapped into a 4 ton ladle to whi.-.-h pi,@oes of 1.5 - 3.43 kg/ton pure aluminum were a(rded. Steels weA held in the ladle until 1,5200C and used for castings tending to hot cracks. The tendency to hot cracks, shrinkage factor, gas content, magnetic, physical and mechanical properties were determined. A description of the inspecting method is given. The tests 2 and 3 were performed in induction furnaces de-- signed by "Dinamoll and ToNlITMash. Test 2 included aoid electric steel con- taining 0,27% C, 0-37% Si, 0.58% Mn, 0,039% P and 0.038% S., For test 3 the charge consigted of 9.43 kg steel cuttings-containing 0.06% C, 0.48 kg syn- thetic cast iron and ferroalloys. Ferromanganese was added correspondingly to the melting stage, followed by ferrosilicen 2 minutes prior to teeming. Alumirvim. was added to the bottom of ladle. The steel was heated io 1,6500:- 1,7000C and tapped into the ladle at 1,600 - j,6500C. The speoimensof test 3 were poured at 1,5500C. The physical and mechanical properties were test.- ed on wobbler sps,@,imens subje2ted to the usual annealing. The results of the chemical analysis and the mechanical.tests are shown in Table 2. In all cases increased quantities of added and residual aluminum improved the ste6l flowatility. A104 A133 410 castings compared to Nos. 11 - 18 castings,, Test 4 dealt with the effect of aluminum on the formation of hot cracks during deoxidation. The specimens were inspected by the magnetic defectoscopy method. The results coincide with the recommendations in Reference 4 (N. N. Dobrokhotov, "Liteynoye proiz- vodstvoll, no. 12, 1958) advising the addition of considerably higher quanti- ties of.aluminum. A residue of 0.25% aluminum has no adverse effect or. steel containing 0.20 - 0.25% oxygen, but improves its casting properties. The in-.' teraction of nitrogen andaluminum deserves special attention. Nitrogen im- proves the tensile strength of iron, mild steel and cast iron, while decreas.- ing ductility of iron and carbon steel due to the presence of phosphovus. Carbon.and oxygen have analogous effect. Less than 0.5% Al have no effect on iron, free from other substances but affect the properties of steels oon- taining oxygen, nitrite or sulfur. The fractures of acid electric steel castings contain 0.005 - 0.01% nitrogen. Sufficient quantities of free alu- minum in steel bind most of the nitrogen into alumitnum nitride. Contr%dic- tory data on aluminum nitride and also its favorable effect on steel are men.- tionea. In steel casting Al is an intensive deoxidizer and paralyses the ad- verse effect of nitrogen and by formation of A12s) sulfide sometimeu aluQ that of sulfur. These factors explain the diminished tendency to hot cracks of cast acid carbon electric steel to whicli 2 - 4 kg/ton aluminum were added. In view of the position of the defect, it was thought that the defect was caused by non-uniform heating of ingots in the soaking pit. To check on this possibility, ingots from 16 heats were heated according to three alternative heating practices: a) by the ;usual ractice, i.e. turning the ingot 1800 1.5 hours before t he removal from the soaking pit; b) by heating the ingots without turning and c) heating the ingots in reverserl position (head part down). The subsequent eyami tion of blooms did not show any relationship between the heating practice and the position of the defect. Obeervations during rolling indicated that the defect appears on the face most cooled with water used for Card 1/34 cooling rolls. This was confirmed by rolling a part of SOV/133-59-2-15/26 On the Nature of Fissures on Steel lKhl8N9T the ingots from the same heat with and without water cooling of rolls. The defect appeared on all blooms rolled with water Cooling. The following mechanism of the fo-mation of the defect is postulated: a) water from rolls falling on to the rolled surface cools only the surface layer, reheating of which by the heat from the lower situated layers is slow due to the low conductivity of IKhl8N9T steel; b) the cooled layer becomes more rigid than the rest of the metal and is more difficult to deform along the height and this obtains a smaller 61-ongation, as a result tensile stresses appear on this layer; a) a decrease in plasticity of the cooled la-yer is particularly characteristic for lKhl8N9T steel, the plasticity ran of which lies within 1150-1250OC; d) under the influence of tensile stresses the less plastic and weakened by skin holes (on the surface of an ingot) layer breaks forming a row of transverse fissures, In order to prevent the formation of the defect, rolling of steel lKhl8N9T on Card 2/3 the blooming mill should be carried out without or with 6OV/133-59-2-15/26 On the Nature of Fissures on Steel lKhlBNgT only a small supply of water for cooling rolls. An increase in the number of turnings helps to decrease the number and the Bize of fissures on the surface of the bloom. Them are 2 figures. The investigation supplements earlier exporimental results of the present- authors (A. L Komissarov and A; A. Khudonlkikh, Stall 1963, No. 4). The specimens were kept in the furnace at 1220-1230C for 16 hours and were annealed at 790-80OG for a period of I hour/ton of stool. The experimontal results are presented in graphs and tables (see Fig. 1). It was found that the most important factor responsible for .carbide formation was the carbon content in the steel. The chromium content was of secondary importance. The most effective method for lowering the carbide content - of the.stool (along with decreasing the carbon content to below 1%) was found to be w increase in the rate of'cooling after rolling at temperatures not lower than 820- -8500. Normalization from a temperature of 920-9000 followed by annealing at 7900.
