ABSTRACT: This article is intended to focus the attention (if scientists
concerned with the development of a theory of het;erogeneous equi-
libria on several investigations of Russian scientists on this
field (whi,:h have been forgotten, such as those by D. P.
Konovaloy and X. S. Vrevskiy). D. P. Konovalov's investigations
of the thermodynamics of phase equilibria were written before
Gibbe had devised his thermodynamic methods. Konovaloy'a laws,
viz. his condition of stability may be derived d--rectly from
Gibbs# principle of equilibrium (Ref 4). Besides other aignifi-
cant results, D. P. Konovalov has successfully enployed vapor-
pressure measurement as a thermodynamio method for investigat-
ing phase equilibria. An important work on the thermodynamics
of phase equilibria in the monograph by P. T. Paisallskiy whiah
was published in 1695 (Ref 8)- In 1909 N- M- Yitiorf (Ref 9)

Thermodynamics of Phase Equilibria
from the curves of the thermodynamic potential, and plotted
100 kinds of diagrams for binary systems which still today
serve as a source for phase diagrams of binary systems. Another
important work constitutes R. F. Khollman's monograph (Ref 11)
"On the Thermodynamics of Saturated Solutions" (11K termodinamike
nasyshohennykh rastvorov") which gives a complete survey of the
phase conditions of binary systems and establishes several
rules, Some references are made to this book, and further a pub-
lication by A. V. Storonkin (Ref 1) is mentioned. In 1913 0. A.
Nazing (Ref 12) derived a set of differential equations defining
the equilibrium of a two-phase multicomponent system. These
equations were set up on the basis of Gibbs' general condition
of thermodynamic equilibrium. Mazing carried out further Investi-
gations of thermodynamic problems. After brief reference to these
studies, the author finally mentions publications by P. N. Pavlov
(Ref 13 j who dealt with the thermodynamics of surface phenomena.

region of higher pressures 'was developed. Vor the calculation of extrapolated v
equations of state are, recommended of which constants are determined from ore of
the last experimental points and from derivatives at this point. it is shown that
errors in determining the constants vbich are mainly due to errors In the derivatives
may be considerably reduced. Two equations of state, namely, Tait's equaticn and
Siron's equation were examined. The Diron equation suggented here may be uted for
extrapolating thermal quantities of liquids and gases to a range of several thouflarid
attlJospherea. A method to given for determining the maxinwo pressure to which extra-

TEXT: Air-are cutting or drilling-out of parts at a Soviet plant were
replaced by mechanized cutting using the NMET-105 (ImEr-105) plasma torcb,`
designed by the Institut metallurgii Imeni A. A. Baykova AN SSSR (Institute of
Metallurgy Imeni A. A. Baykov,__AS USSR). optimum cutting conditions were
up using a specially modified semi-automatic gas-cutting maehine (Fig. 1) . As
the IM-105 torch heated up very rapidly during the tests its design was modi-
fied as followst the tungsten electrode holder rod was made of copper to ensure
a better elimination of the heat; the contaot surface of the welding cable
connegtion with the tungsten electrode rod was enlargpd; 'the welding cables of
50 nud' cr6ss section were replaced by cables of 70 mm~~. After the aforementioned
improvements had been brought about, the torch operation was stable without

TEXT: The author reports on investigations on the Introduction of a mecha-
nized cutting process of aluminum alloys and stainless steel with the aid of*a
special installation, which were carried at one of the enterprises of the KR11nin-
arad Econnm1c Ravon. The installation for the automatic or semi-automatic cutting
is composed of thenc -500 (PS-500) welding transformer; instrument cabinet with
voltmeter, ammeter, pressure gage, intermediate relay, start button, transformer
ana !ortactor; special welding head, gas-cutting automatic of the coordinate or
hinged type for the cutting of shaped parts by a copying device or g&s-cutting
semi-automatic for the cutting of straight parts by a guide rail; PK -53 (RK-53)
oxygen reductor; hose for wa ?r and gas feed; control circuit line and npr,&.,
(PRGD) welding lines of 70 mm cross section. The cutting of aluminum alloys and
stainless steel is effected by fusing the metal and blowing it out from the hollow

of the cut by a gas discharge Jet. To produce this jet an are discharge is utiliz-
ed excIted between the tungsten electrode and the nozzle. Argon gas Is conducted
along the are column, which, passing from the electrode to the nozzle, is ionized
and emerges from the nozzle as a stable, luminous jet having a tapered shape, the
dimensions of which depend on the design of the nozzle, current power, gas pressure
and the recess of the electrode in the nozzle channel. The Jet temperature attains
15.OOOOC and more. The introduction of the described mechanized cutting process
reduces the labor consumption 13 times and cuts metal consumption by 3C%. There
