Errata slip inserted. 13,600 copies printed. Ed.: S. B. Stark; Ed. of Publishing House: A. A. Bagin; Tealh. Ed.V M. K. Attopovich. PURPOSE: This is a textbook for students of institutions of higher education specializing in metallurgy and the processing of ferrous and nonferrous metals. It may also be useful to neem, technicians, and:designers in related fields. COVERAGE: The book deals with the operating principles and designs of pumps, compressors, and fans. Problems connected with.the selection of these devices for use at metallurgical plants are discussed. The design, operation, and maintenance of water- pumping, air-compressions and ventilation installations are de- scribed. One chapter is'devoted to vacuum pumps. The basic principles of hydraulicsj hydrostatics, and hydrodynamics are Card 11W 2_ Pumps, Compressors, and Fans SOV2724 presented. Part I was written by Docent D. V. Rogozkin. The author thanks personnel of the following plants and design organizations for the'use of their materials in preparing the book; Giproalyuminiy, Gipronikell, Giprosvetmet, Nevskiy mashinostroitellnyy zavod (Neva Machinery-construction Plant), Krivorozhskiy metallurgicheskiy zavod (Krivoy Rog Metallurgical Plant), Plant imeni KotlyakoV, and Plant imeni Kalinin. There are 33 references; 30 Soviet, 2 German, and 1 English. TABLE OF CONTENTS: PART I. HYDRAULICS Introduction 1. The subject of hydraulics and a brief history of its development 2. In the transducer, the pressure acts on the arm of a potentiometric converter connected to..a d-c bridge circuit. Depth is determined by bridge unbalance using an M-24 microammeter (100 uamp, 700 ohms). The depth range for a TDB-10 transducer is 0-100 m with accuracy of 0.5 m. The time constant is 1 see, and the circuit is powered by a 1,5-v 25L-9 dry-cell battery, The range of depth measurements can be varied by replacing the TDB-10 with a TDB-501 card 1/3 ACC NR, ~1;i_ 14R4 Icard 2/3 Fig. I.- TDB-type pressure transducer 5 in watertight costs I Watertight Is casing; 2 - TDB Z ressure transducer; p 3 cover; 4 -filled ants-1 alcohol 'chamber; 5 -, rubber R-01 diaphregul 6' - pro- tective Cap$ threaded plug; a IpLge 2. A13STRICTo The papar undor review deacribas one of the experimenta on.the in- vestigation of the main properties of those bundles of fast neutrouc which are produced at the bombing of a beryllium target by protons of 600 MeV. The targets of a thickness of 295 cm vefe affixed within a chamber of the dynchrooyclotron. The experiments were c8nducted 0 for the exitanglas of the neutrons of 9 - 0 and 0 ' 18 with re- spect to the direction of the protons falling on the tar6et. The energy distributions of the neutrons were invGstigated by determin- ing the energy spectra of the recoil protons ( which ivere emitted at the elastic n-p-scatterin&). The measurements were conducted main- ly by means of the difference method. The souress of errors and the- necessary corrections are brivfly discussed. The energy dietribu- tion as 8btained from these experiments is repreaented in.a diagram., At 0 0 a maximum is situated at 600 MeT, thus 80 MeY below the Card 113 upper boundary of the spectrum. This is connected with the distri-. -3/55 The Energy Diatributions of Neutrons Which Are Emitted at Bombing of Beryllium By Protons of the Energy of 680 MeV. 'bution of the Drimary'proton bundle over different energies. In the case under consideration in the present paper there remains, as r4-, sult of the p-n-achange interaction, a proton with low energy in- stead of the neutron, in the nucleous. As result of the effects of the Pauli prinoiplet.the probability of this process must decreane considerably. It is possible that the plural collisions start to play a considerable Ale (and also such collisions in Which a part of the energy is carried away by a third particle).,.-All those state- ments are only of qualitative character. If the enerjSy of the pri- mary protons increases from 480 MeY to 680 MeV, then there appears~. in the anorgy spectrum of the neutrons a second maximum in the ene-r-, gy range of 100 - 400 MeV. This ipaximum is caused mainly by the.,~eu- trons.which0areemitted at the following reactions: p + p --* n +n+yl p, + n -.# x + n + p ; p + n m# n + n + n . (in this connection, these nucleons are produced on the nucleons of the beryllium nucleo'n] Finally, the paper under review enumerates experimental facto which. Measurements were carried out by means of this new method fortheangle of~emission of,Oo of the neutrons. Main attention was directed to the high energy part of the spectrum, knowledge of which is necessary for the purpose of carryin&out most of the work in connection with the bundles. The scheme of the experiment is illustrated by means of a schematical Card 1/3' drawing., A neutron bunch impinged upon a polyethylene- and New Measurements of the Spectrum of Neutrons Which SOV/56-35-3-52/61 ILre Formed During the.Bombardment of Be by 68o mev Protons Card 2/3 a graphite target. The effect on hydrogen was determined as the difference of,these effects on these targets. When calculating the spectrum the energy losses of.the~protons in the.targeis and in the air, as well as the astigmatism-~ of the magneitic system were taken into account. The results''. obtained by measuring the neutron spectrum after taking all.. necessary corrections into account are shown in formiof a diagram. The same diagram also shows previously obtained data. This energy spectrum has 2 maxima at about 275 and 620 MeV. The spectral range of from 100 to 500 XeV contains., a small admixture of protons, which are emitted in the 0 reaction-n + p4TE + n + P as well as in.the reaction n + p->Tr + p + p. The reasons for the occurrence of 2 maxima in the neutron spectrum were discussed by V. S. Kiselev and V. B. Flyagin (Ref 1). The. authors investigated the reactions n+p--).e+ d and n+p--.,Tt+n+p with an apparatus of complicated structure, which is described. The neutrons originated from a synchrocyclotron, the energy amounted to 600 MeV, and the intensity of the beam was 3.104cm-2see-I.,The experimental order is outlined by figure 10~ The -quanta produced by the decay of T~-mesons were recorded~ Card 1/3 Investigation of the Reaction.n+p-+Ie+d at Effective SOV/56-.35-4-4/52 Neutron Energies of 600 MeV and the Hypothesis of Charge Independence by means of atelescope of the following structure: 3 scintillation counters (diameter 909 120 and 125 mm respectively)p before them a lead converter (diameter 90 mm, thickness 7 mm)i and.before it the fourth counter. The electric plant is shown in figure 2 in form of a block scheme.. In the following, control tests, the r-telesPope, the measuring results and.their utilization, as well as measurement of:the total cross section are dealt with. Finally, the results obtained are discussed. For jhe angular distribution at 600 MeV the authors obtained (0.220 - 0.022) + COS29(in the C. m. s.), and a total cross section of (1-5 0-3) . 10-27cm2 ; these values are indicative of the existence of charge independence, Card 2/3 'Investigation of the Reaction n+p-.Py(+d at Effective SOV/56-35-4-4/52' Neutron Fnergiea,of 600 MeV 4nd the,Hyp9theVisof Charge Independence They are compared in a table iith those- published by.
