within that period. Liver metAstasos were encountered most froluently (102

TITLE: The Determination of Forces and Power Requirements in
the Plastic Deformation of Metals by Measurements in
Production Plants

TEXT: Hungarian and Hungarian born scientists like M. Hermann,
K. Lang, T. Karman, A. Nadai, E. Cotel and, more recently,
A.Geleji have pioneered the theory of plastic deformation. This
work has been supplemented by experimental measurements made by
the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Metals Technology
of the Nsht(zipari M%Tszakt Egyetem (University for the Heavy
Industry) in 1957 and 1958. Theme measurements, carried out in
various industrial works, aimed at establishing the actual loading
of production units and at clarifying the practical implications
or theory. Load cells of 30 to 800 tons capacity were
constructed using strain gauges. On the Ehrhardt-type punching
press and push bench of the Tube Works of the Csepel Vas- its

force were recorded; in addition, the speed of the puahJng rod
was measured by recording the impulses from a photo-call which
received the light signals passing through the slots of a dime
fitted to the push-rod actuating gear; motor voltage and power
were also recorded. A similar arrangement was employed on the
three-high steel-plate rolling mill of the L8rinci Heng*rm&
(Lgrine Rolling Mills)j total roll force, motor current and
rolling speed were recorded by means of oncillographs, power on
separate kW recorder and the length and width of plate was found
from photographs ta%en from an overhead crane. The forces
acting on the work and support rolls and on the piercing plug of a
Mannesmann piercing mill of the "Ceepol" Tube Mills were measured
by a total of seven load calls; power and motor current were
separately recorded. The force showed a gradual Increase in the
Ehrhardt piercing press due to the flow of metal along the
container wall. The combined diagram of Fig,12 gives the time

Typical results extracted from records tahen at the plate rolling
mill, and plotted against the number of passes in rolling A.35.21
quality steel from 180 x 300 x 1300 mm to 8 x 1200 x 12280 mm,
are shown in Fig.14. From graphs like this it was possible to
assess the efficiency of operation and a useful guide was found
for the design or rolling equipment. There are 15 figures and
