ABSTRACTt Conditions for the determination of free and of toltAl carboxylic group of
pectin by the precipitation of insoluble pectins and pectinates of copper according to
the method of V. Tibenskys, J9 Rosik, and V, Zitka is discussed, The influence of pH
upon the precipitation of these Ct@-o6npounds from the point of view of the capacity of
these solutions as regulators of the pHq and of their content of the W63* anions is
discussed. The HCO3 anions are formed by carbonization of the alkaline solution
during de-esterification of pectin by the influence of atmospheric CO@. The results
of measurements at optimum pH are compared to results obtal-ned in the determination
of carbo)qlic groups by acidinetric methods; the results agree within approzo :t I%e

ABSTRACT: IPol*dthaarylio' acid was used as a model in the study*
Potentiome-trio titration with 0.1 N NaOH showed that it is dif-
1-ficult to determine separate values for HC1 and pol7methaery
acid. Total acidity could, however, be determined well, and Gl by
precioitation as the Ag salt. The titration car, best be conducted
in a medium of 1M K01 . The same method can be used for poly-
uronic acid. In the presence of polysaooharides better results are
obtained without the KC1. M. Bystran participated In the experimental pa3rt of
the work. The preparation of the "Tripektin" was done by the Swedish Joint-Stock
