COVERME: These articles review scientific. achliaveaents which have contributed to the econanic development of the Soviet Far East. The creation of 'the first baiversity in the Far East and of the Par East Branch of the Academy of Science is discussed. Studies in the history, geology, geophysies, chemist-~ y, biology., and econcmicsof the region are discussed and a great number of scientists etiid. their contributions mentioned. Stress is laid on the progress of the geological survey carried o4t in the sourthern part of the Far East and the consequent Card 1/3 .Science in the Far East SOV/3138 discovery of coal, silver, lead, gc;ld andi petroleum. In add~itioa to studies of the subsurface wealth, works on the vegetation and forest, nxe also presented. Numerous references are incorporated in the text. ORG: Chemistry Department, MGU (KhimiCheskiy fakultet NIGU) TITLE: Mass-spectrometric ion detector of the scintillation type SOURCE: Pribory i tekhnika. eksperimenta, no 2, 1966, 99-101 TOPIC TAGS: ion,,ion beam, ion detector, scintillation ion detector, mass spectrome-I teri mass spectrometer sensor, plastic seal, mass spectro- scopy ABSTRACT: The paper describes a very sensitive detector of ions for use in the mass spectrometer MS-4. it fills the need for Ithe registration of very weak ion beams, equivalent to ion currents of 10-15 - io- 9 amps4 The detector is based upon the scin4 tillation phenomenon, aided by an ion/electron converter. Sensitivities three orders of m agnitude higher than those of the usual electrometric concept have been obtained. The design permits quick switching from the scintillation to the elDctrorietric mode. This feature is useful for calibration and is necessary for measuring ion currents higher than 10-13amps. The conceptual schematic of the detector is sho;.m in Fig* Here, I is the final entrance slit of the mass spectrometer. If the emitter of secon- dary electrons, 2, is grounded, the ion beam proceeds along a. line trajectory to en- ter the Faraday chamber 4 of the conventional registration terminal. 1.1ithminus 14 kv Card 1/2 UDC: 621.384.8 ACC NIR. AP6013508 at %he emitter, the ions are accelerated toward i;, knocking off secondary electrons. The same field accelerates the electrons toward the (grounded) fluorescent fi,1m, 3, deposited on the glass plate 5, in the field of view of the photo- electric multiplier 6, which delivers the registra- . 4 ..i tion signal. The system is intrinsically stable to 31 the extent that fluctuation sources are essentially The minimum observed those of the power supplies ,. registered signal as 2.10 amps. As an ion coun- W te, the detector is lirear from several ion/sec. to 10 ion/sec. The discrimination level is ad justed so that at a a control loss of over 11 '~* the back- ground would not exceed 10 - 15 pulses per second. Fig. 1. PERIODICALS Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR~ 19599 Vol i27t Hr 3t PP 5 86-588 - (USSR)_ ABSTRACTs The underbush mentioned ~n the title grows wild in tropical oountries and is cultivated in the USSR to a large extent as a plant for technical fibres (Ref 1). After a survey of publioa- tions on substances acting upon the heart (Rafe 1-8)v the authors give the results of isolating corchorue. Its aglucone - strophanthidin and its migar-the bovinosis, have properties which eorrespond to published data. The non-fermented seeds mainly occur in two glyoosides scluble in water. In the paper chromatogram they were denoted'as "Yo" and "D" patches; smaller amounts of substances were found which were denoted as patohes 'IS" (Corchovosid A) and "V11 (Strophanthidia). They apparently develop by the hydrolysis of glycosides soluble in water auring the treatment of the extract (Fig 1). The authors suggest a formula (1) for the sugar part of olitorin, and Ca-rd 111112 arrived at the following conclusions: 01-1torting a New Card-iant Glycoside of SOT/20-127-3-30/re CoTchomus Olitorius L. 19 the new cardiant glycoside isolated from the mentioned spe,~ies of oorohorusq~is a straphanthiaol bovinoside.
