A t6taForl35 per-sons were examined. In half of them the visual acuity was determ.
i.ned by Sivtsev,s table, and In the other half by thit of SheValev. It was found that
with a visual acuity from 0.1 to 0.4 and from 1.0 to 2.0 more accurate results were
obtained with Shevalers table. With vision of 0.8 to 1.0 more accurate results were
obtained by using SIvtsev9b table. The author believes that Shevalev's table inay
be used for sight testing in ophthalmologic Institutions'. (S)

TITLEt Experience from work with the First Nuclear Power Plant
PERIODICALt Atomnaya energiya, v. il, no. 1, 1961, 12 - 18
TEXTs The First Nuclear Power Plant -in the USSR, which was the first in
the world, has been. successfully operated for seven years; this paper
presents a short survey of the experiences accumulated during the first six
years at this station. The station itself posaesses all the eqipment
available at a large research reactor. The construction of the Beloyar&aya
GRES (Beloyarsk StatR Regional Electric Power Plant) represents a further
development of the First Nuclear Power Plant. The working of the reactor
at different power levelst In the so-called "cold state", at 0.01% of the
nominal power, "he reactor has the lowest power level at which the automatic
power regulator can st"L-11 function; the rise in this level is checked by
measuring the neutron flux; the power level can be doubled within 20 see.

Heating begins with a rise of the power level to 5% of the nominal power
(first eyelet 160-11100C,pressure in the second eyelet 7 - 8 atm), t 'hen to
10clIo of the nominal power (temperature at the entrance to the reactori
1900C, steam pressure 12 5 atm); these parameters remain unchanged on furtber
increase of power. The total heating time for the system is 3-5 - 4 hours;
during this time, nitrogen is blown ir. the graphite system to remove oxygen.
The parameters of the power station for 50, 75, and 100/16 of the nominal
power are given in Table 1. On shutting the reactor. it is first cooled,
by utilizing the natural loss of heat, to the temperature of water in the
first cycle (110-1200C), which requires 1.5-2 hours. The cooling water is
then removed from circulation and cooled; t-his enables the reactor to be
cooled rapidly. Reliability and duration of the reactor's operation depend
on the quality of the fuel element; the station works with tube type ele-
ments. The fuel is contained between two tubes of nonrusting steel (the
inner is 0.4 mm thick and the outer 0.2 mm thick). This kind proved to be
particularly reliable% Not a single element has been dislocated during the
whole period the station has been in operation. The system of partial
renewal of the fuel element is used for guaranteeing the deepest possible
burning. (N. A. Dollezhal et a]. reported on this at the Second Geneva

Conference, 1958)- Numerical data about the consumption are given in Table
2. Deformation of the fuel elements were checked, a deformation of
14.20 +.0.02 mm of the element jackets was found. Experiments relating to
the boiling of water in the fuel channels and determination of the hydro-
dynamic characteristics of the fuel elements in the reactor were started
in 1956. The preliminaries were completed in September 1956, and one channel
was brought to boiling operation. This first boiling channel worked for
400 hours at thermal-loads of (0.45 - 0-80-10 6kcal/m 2. hr (steam content
5 - 20~ by weight, flow rate 250 kg/hr). As the system proved WUBfactoryt
more, channels were brought to boiling operation; in the middle of 1957 there
were 70 such channels, more than half of the total. The boiling operation
was characterized by the following parameters: Steam content at the exit
of the channels: 5 - 2% by weight, thermal load (0.6 - 1.3).106kcal/m2-hr,
water fl-ow'rate 0.7 - 1 mAr at 100 atm and 1900C at the exit. Since
superheating of" steam constitutes one of the most important methods for
increasing efficiency, experiments in this connection were carried out in
the following yearp with a special experimental loop (Fig. 1) to study the
methods of bringing thesteam to a superheated state. For this, a method of

ABSTRACT: The report covers feasibilities of exploiting the unique sorption properties of
synthetic zeolites to develop an industrial process for the desulfurization Of C4-C6 alkanes
and cycloalkanes used as source materials in the manufacture of high polymers. Emphasis
was placed on the removal of 'niercaptansAand thiophene.\ Isotherms for adsorption of various
substances, hydrocarbons, and sulfurous compounds by various types of zeolites were obtained
experimentally and processed graphically. Values for affinity factors, peak adsorption volume,
and other needed constants were calculated by employing equations which describe the volumet
rio filling of pores. Coadsorption of sulfurous compounds and Isopentane from the liquid phase

TEXT: Polychelate titanosiloxane elastomers were synthesized by poly-
condensation of organosilicon diols with monomers containing titanium.
The monomers used were bis-(acetyl acetonate)dibutoxy titanium (I) and
b4-a-(8~-o.xyquinolinp-)dibutoxy titanium (11). Organosilicon diols were
obtained by the method described in Ref. 3 (K. A. Andrianov and
V V., Severnyy, Dokl, AN SSSR 134, 1347 (1960)), The polycondensation
took place in pure nitrogen atmosphere at 1800C and a residual pressure
from 1 to 2 mm; the separating butyl alcohol was distilled off at the same
'kime. Soluble red-brown elastic polymers were produced: poly-bis-

and V. V. Kochkin, Zavodsk., laboratoriya 22, 352 (1956)). The
vitrification temperature was found to be influenced by the groups
surrounding the titanium atom. Molecular weights were determined by the

TEXT: In continuation of earlier papers by the authors (Vyeokomolek.

organotitanosiloxanes, the reaction of butyl orthotitanate with dimethyl

bond wag split and that low-molecular organo-ailicon compounds formed.

ABSTRACT: The authors have developed a design for an instrument based on the use of
gas-liquid chromatography for determining phase compositions. The design was tested
during an investigation of equilibrium between the liquid-phases and vapor in a
three-component system at temperatures of 20,40 and 70'C. The reagents used in this
investigation were purifibd of admixtures by way of fractional distillation on a,
column measuring 1.2 m in height and 18 mm in diameter. The column was topped by a
cap in the form of W mm wire spirals. An effective separation of components was
achieved through the use of solid paraffin applied on diatomite bricks at a ratio
of 1:4, in the capacity of a stationary phase. Spiral, glass chromatographic col-
umns with lengths of 2-3 m and diameters of 4-5 mm were used. The separation

temperature was 99.5 *0.30C. Helium was used as a carrier gas. Registration de-
vices included a catarometric indicator and an EPP-09 electronic potentiometer. The
obtained experimental data was verified by means of strict thermodynamic correla-
tions. The chromatographs were interpreted by introducing standardization coeffi-
cients. Heptane was used as a comparable component with a coefficient equal to 1.
,The authors concluded that the experimental data obtained on the equilibrium liquid-
.liquid-vapor, agree thermodynamically with each other. Thus the simple design of
the instruments make it possible to obtain reliable results on the equilibrium be--
itween liquid phases and vapor. Orig. art. has: 6 figures and 6 tables.

TITLE: Choice of a now oiling agent for processing capron in

TEXT: On the basis of the results obtained in the testing of new oiling
agents the authors recommend that 2-5 - 4-5% of the type k-160 (-16o)
should be applied to the fiber. The oiling agent consists of 82%
Velositetl(L), 6% 01-4 (OP-4) and 6% Stearoks-6. Twisting is to be
stabilized by low-pressure steaming. [Abstracter-s note: Complete
