Title A New Flax Variety, T-5
Orig Pub Lan i nonoplya, 1957, No 12; 22-24
Abstract Variety testing conducted in 1953-1954 by the Tomsk
Regional Selection Station showed that tith regard to
yield and the quality of the fibers, T-5 surpasses the
Svetoch, Stakhanovets, Pobeditell and Fryadil'shchik
varieties, and is not inferior to them with regard to
the yield of the seeds This variety is resistimt to
damping off, has tall ;tems and is classed as a medium
variety. On a production scale, it is recommended to
soir it at the rate of 90-100 kg/ha. This variety was
obtained by crossing varieties 1-2 and B-1143 and sub-
sequently selecting. -- A.M. Smirnov

ABSTRACTs The author gives an approximate method of evaluation of
stresses and strains in shafts of complex shapes under
the elasto-plastic state of deformation. The analysis is
based on the theory of Ref 1 (deformation of conical
bodies) and assumes that radial lines in any cross-section
are not distorted under the strain. This assumption has
been confirmed experimentally (Ref 2) for the elastic
range of strains. The main object is to determine the
critical cross-section of the fillet within the angle of
transition a = 5 to 20 0. As shown in Ref 3, this
depends upon the ratio of the radius of curvature of
the fillet (P) to the smallest diameter of the shaft (d).
Further, as quoted in Ref 4 and 5, the magnitude and-
the distribution of stresses in the critical section
Card 1/4 depends upon the depth of the rounding, which can be

relations of Eq (1) or (2) respectively (for the meaning
of symbols see Fig I and 2). Assuming now the ideal-
plastic material (see Ref 6) and linearized
displacements (Fig 4) the author considers the
equilibrium of a conical element FCDDlClK (see Fig I
and 3) under the aation of the turning moment applied
to the shaft and finds the shear stress distribution on
a conical crOBs-section (Fig 5) and eventually,summing
up all the contributions of these stresses, arrives at
the formula (Eq 10) relating the applied turning moment
and characteristic parameters of the shaft LYT - yield
point strain, - plasticity parameter (as defined by
Eq (11) page 12u1 and the dimensions of the shaft].
By introducing now some acceptable values of plastic
deformation (ymax) the corresponding values of the
turning moment can be computed and so the graph of Fig 6
obtained. Hence, tqjcing any value of the turning
moment M. and employing graphs of Fig the parameter

of Plasticity uT can be determined, and so the
stresses from Eq (5), (6) and (9) and the strains from
Eq (7) and (8). The coordinate aT and therefore the
size of the plastic zone is given by Eq (11), which can
be solved graphically with the help of the relation
MT = f(aT). The above discussion applies to shallow
roundings. In the case of deep roundings, Eq W),
(71) and (99) are to be used and Eq (10) is replaced by
Eq (12) while Eq (11) is replaced by Eq (13). As regardz
.the residual stresses in the shaft, when the load is
removed subsequently to producing plastic deformation in
the shaft, since only the elastic straina can be
removed, and the elastic strains give rise to a hyperbolic
character of stresses, the result will be as shown in
Fig 7, bottom graph which is the difference between the
full stress on loading (curve (a) at the top of the figure)
and the subsequent removal of the strain (curve (6) at the
top of the figure). Next the problem of the a 'ngle of
Card 3/4 twist is considered. In the case of elastic defo;rmation,

Eq (14) is valid, while in the region of plastic
deformation Eq (15) is applicable. Thus, adding these
two together, the combined result for the elasto-plastic
deformation is Eq (16). In order to check this theory
some experiments were carried out on steel specimens of
parabolic contour (as shown in Fig 8). At first only the
elastic deformations were imposed and it was found that
the exp erimental angles of twist exceeded the theoretical
ones by some 5.8 to 7.2%. Next the angles of twist were
extended into the plastic range of deformation (of ymax
either 3 or 6%) and the results are shown in the table,
where the first line gives the total angle of twist, the
second line gives the subsequent reverse angle of twist
and the third line gives the final (residual) angle of
twist. There are 8 figures, 1 table and 10 Soviet references.

ABSTRACT: The behaviour of OP-65r MlVn service is discussed and
compared with that of the -5 type on the basis of data
collected during a period of over 5 years on a sector of
the Tomsk railway linel submitted to heavy traffic con-
ditionb. The* comparison of rails "P-65P and"P-50' removed
from the track due to various types of defects and the
distribution of defective rails 7-65r according to the kind
of defects (%) and the weight of traffic passed are given
in Tables 1 and 2 respectively. Relative proportion of
rails"P-6-T and"P-50"taken out of commission due to frac-
tures and other defects is shown in Fig'.1 (the amount of
rails"P-65Ptaken out of commission after the passage-of

ABSTRACT: It is pointed out that rails produced. by various works
according to the same technological conditions differ
considerably in their service life., The maximum
differences in the durability of rails of the R-50 type
was between those produced in the Kuznetsk Combine and
"Azovstal"" Works. The service life of the rails produced
on the latter works was 3.7 times longer. Loag
observations of the operating conditions of rails
indicated that the evaluation of their service life on the
basis of summary load carried by the track (t km/km) is
insufficient, as the durability of the rails depends also
on loads per axle and frequen6y.of their repetition. The
above, is illustrated by an example of the service life of

TITLE*. Prevention of the Crumbling of Metal from the Head of,
Rails
PERIODICAL: Stal', 1959, Nr 9, pp 840-842 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The introduction of some new types of rails and an
,increase in the rigidity of the track increased the
service life of rails (from 1948 to 1956 the number of
individual rails removed due to defects decreased by
about 40%) but due to heavier working conditions of
rails the appearance of some defects, which previously
were rare, became more frequent. The appearance of
crumbling out of the metal along the internal rolling
surface of heads in the external rails on a curved track
belongs to this category (Fig 1). An investigation
carried out in 1957 on the Tomsk railway indicated that
the percentage of rails removed due to the above defect
depends on the radius of curvature of the curved section
of the track:
Radius of curvature, m 651 650-451 450

SOV/133-59-9-24/31
Prevention of the Crumbling of Metal from the Head of Rails
A comparison of data on the number of defective rails
with various profiles of the head (profiles are shown
in Fig 3) indicated that the latter factor plays an
important role in the appearance of the defect. Thus,
in addition to strengthening the rail heads by means of
heattreatment or by the use of alloy steels, an
improvement in the shape of the surface of contact
between the rail head and wheels is necessary for an
effective prevention of the appearance of the defect.

ABSTRACT: An arrangernent is described for.introducing ordinates of curves Into
the storage of an "Ural-Z'.1-cornputer;Ithe curve reader from a standard Soviet-made
electronic randorn-process analyzer is used In the arrangement. The analyzer
depends for its operation on converting the optical image Into electrical signals by an
LI-23 vidicon. A block diagram and the principal -diagram of the above arrangement
are explained. The curves can be read from a 100-305-mm recorder or other
chart, or from a 35-mm movie film. Orig. art. has: 5 figures.

consists of a direct current battery, a milliamperemeter of
the type Tt-1, which is incorporated into a.',Yheatstonre bridge-

ABSTRP,CT: This suggestion was awarded a fifth premiwo in an
All-Union PoNver Economy competition. Hithe3--to little
use has been made of waste heat from foundry cupolas
largely because the heat exchangers become ~* irty very
quickly and therefore inefficient. Metal rL!.diation
recuperators of simple construction have recently been
used abroad for this purpose. The authors proposed the
installation of radiation recuperators for heating
blast air on two cupolas of 18 tons per hour upwards.
A sketch of the equipment is given. The recuperator

Chernaya metallurgiya, no.1, 1962, 190-197
TEXT: Gas is best for oxidation-free heating of steel in
open flame furnaces, but many furnaces still burn fuel oil.
Oxidation-free heating of steel in furnaces fired with fuel oil
may take place in a reducing or neutral atmospherp, of incomplete
combustion products. ordinary burners are not suitable and work
is in progress on the preliminary gasification of the fuel oil.
A laboratory. furnace was built with a cyclone combustion chamber
200 mm in diamater and 840 mm long with an electric air beater.
The furnace dimensions were 120 mm cube. The fuel oil,
vapourised by steam, was delivered at 80 OC with high-pressure
(3 atm. 150 OC) steam nozzles fitted tangentially to the
cylindrical part of the furnace. Oxidation was assessed by loss
in weight of grade 45 steel specime'ns. The work was carried out

with fuel oil grade 80 (85.6%, c, 10-55 H2, 0-75 S, 0.5'a 02,
0.5"Q N2, 20,0 W, 0.2% A). Two methods-of combustion were used.
in the first method steam and gas were delivered to the first
nozzle and burnt with hot air in the horizontal cyclone chamber.
The air consumption factor n ranged from 0.31 to 0.52; the
specific steam consumption was 0.6 kg per kg of fuel oil.
At a hot air temperature of 500 OC the furnace temperature ranged
from 1030 to 1060 OC. With the second method of combustion the
first nozzle was supplied with fuel oil pulverized by steam.and
with air sufficient for complete combustion. A second nozzle
delivered fuel oil and steam into the flow of hot gas from the
first nozzle in sufficient amount to reduce the overall air
factor to 0.3-0-54. Furnace temperature was 1000-1070 OC.
Both methods -ave practically oxidation-free heating with an
air factor of 0.3; .the specimens were covered with a dense layer
of soot; coke was deposited on the furnace walls. The ;3oot
content of combustion products was less with the second method
than the first, and accordingly further tests at higher
temperatures were carried out by,the second method, placing

ABSTRACT: Figure I records the fundamental data on the decay scheme of
AgI10 collected hitherto. This Y?6k determined the relative in-
tensities of 12 ~'-linea of Ag , whereby it was made possible
to check the balance of the intensities on the individual levels
as well as to determine the mull6fields of a number of transi-
tions. The Y-radiation of Ag was investigated by means of
at,lf-spectrometer with improved focusing and an "el-otrot which
U zed the emitted electrons. A silver chip of 7,6 g weight
activated by neutrons served as source. The measurements were
carried out 3 months after the preparation of the source. The
total view of the )r-spectrum of Ag11O is represented on figure

pure methacrylic acid (MkA) was studiod in an Othmer apparatus, in view
of the fact that MAA when oynthesizedg or when regenerated from waste
products, is always obtained in an aqueous solution. In solutions
containing up to 10% 14AA, the concentration was determined titrimetrically;
in concentrauled solutions it was'determined from the refractive expdnent.
Either method had an accuracy of + 0-5 relative %. Pure MAA was.obtained
by distillation at *5 mm Hg; crystallization was prevented by cooling the

TITLE., Apparatus for the Production of Bent Glass (Ustanovka dlya
proizvodetva gnutogo stekla)
PERIODICAL: Steklo i keramika, 19581 TIr 11, PP 44-46 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The apparatus was developed.and introduced by a group of
engineers in the Cusevskiy Factory. It consists mainly
of an electro-furnace (see figrurel. The nountibr molding
(mollirovaniye) possesses the desired form for the bent
glass and is constructed of heat-resistant steel. It is
fastened to a slide, which can be moved along rails in the
furnace. On this molding form bent wind shields for the
"Volga" and "Moskvich" automobiles are produced. The glass
packets are prepared in regard to size and strength, and
are exactly aligned and attached securely to the slide,
and then is introduced into the furnace through a fore-
hearth of the furnace. At a furnace temperature of 590-6210'
the glass becomes deformed and assumes the shape of the
Card 1/2 molding form. This process lasts 6 to 8 minutes and can be
