ABSTRACT: An investigation was made of the effect of nuclear radiation
on some properties of CdS single crystals grown by the zone sublimation
method and not subjected to alloying. To mea-~ure Hall effect, speci-
mens shaped as a parallelepiped (15 x 4 x 1 mm) were used; for other
investigations, specimens 4 x 3 x I mm were used. The neutron irradia-
tion was carried out in a VVR-1-1-type reactor at a temperature 'below
70C. The.gamma-ray Irradiation was ca'rried out in a cobalt installa-
tion at a temperature below 20C. To determine the -?character of the

defects appearing in CdS single crystals due to neutron and gamma-ray
irradiation, the following crystal characteristics were investigated
before and after irradiation: dark resistance, photosensitivity to
white light, spectral distribution of photoconductivity, spectra of
infrared quenching, Hall mobility of majority current carriers and its
dependence on temperature, concentration and depth of occurrence of
capture levels, characteristics of recombination centers, and lumi-
nescence spectra at 300 and 77K. Mobility and spectral distribution
of photoconductivity were measured in a cryostat at a vacuum of the
order of 10-4 mm Hg. All other characteristics were measured in the
air. It was found that gamma-irradiation primarily cr'eates acceptors
type defects. in CdS, the simplest acceptors can be Cd vacancies or
S atoms in interstices. Neutron irradiation creates donor-type
defects. The simplest donors can be eit 'her Cd atoms in interstices or
S vacancies, In addition, the,products of nuclear transformations can

ABSTRACT: A procedure for obtaining large single crystals of N1, by thQ zone
sublimation method is described. X-ray investigations of the defects in the
structure of these crystals were carried out. It was shown that they are more
perfect than those previously obtained (I. D. Konozenko, V. I. Ustlyanov, same
source, V. 5, no. 5, 196o). The electrophysical properties were analyzed and the
existence of a wide photoconductivity maximum was found. The depth of bedding and
of trapping level concentrations were determined. On the basis of these investi-
gations, it is possible to obtain purer single crystals of the A,,BGtype compoundo
with an improved lattice by perfecting the technoloa. Orig. art. has: 6 rigiires.

Seventy-two casos of atypical primary pneumonia are discussed and it is observed
that an aetiological diagnosis is clinically impossible. As the laborajory methods
of demonstrating the various viruses alao remained negative. it was necessary
to depend on epidemiological data: 8 cases of Influenz--i pneumonia, 47 cases of
ornithoeiB and 17 'atypical* cases in the strict sense. Chloramphenicol and chlor-
tetracycline produced satisfactory results. The incapacity for work lasted on the

properties of various types of graphite and of n1obium and zirconium carbides in

TITLE: Determination of the elastic moduli in a wide range of
temperatures

TEXT: The authors developed a method that makes it possible to determine
the elastic moduli in d temperature range of from - 190 to + 10000C. A
cylindrical test body is suspended by two thin metal wires one of which is
the lead-in for acoustic vibrations. The latter pass through the test
body to the second wire,and through a piezoelementf Are visualized on the
screen of an oscilloscope. The resonance frequency of this system depends
on the elastic moduli of the.test body. The temperature dependence of
these elastic moduli can be ascertained-by measuring the resonance fre-
quencies at various temperatures. A 176 mm long test cylinder of 7 mm.
diameter was used in determining the Young's modulus E. The modulus of
rigidity, G, was determined with dumbbell-shaped test bodies whose
cylindrical middle part had a diameter of 8 mm. The described method had
