ABSTRACT: The article contains results obtained in a study of
some highland and valley fir forests on the western
slope of Timan in the basin of the Mezenskaya Pizhma
River, Arkhangellsk Oblast. Due to their northern
location and their vertical zoning, the interstream,
forests resemble those of northern Siberia. These
forests are distinguished by open grouping of trees

(class V to-Vb), by a persistent admixture of birch (up to 30 or
40 percent), by a small amount of young trees, and by the presence
in their third (grass and shrub) zone of psychrophytes such as
Empetrum nigrum. Deschampsia flexuosa. and others. The types of
fir stands have been classified as those with: ash and bilberry,
bilberry and green moss, bilberry and Ic,phagnum, horsetail and
sphagnum, and sedge and sphagnum. There is also a type associated
with spruce'and sphagnum swamps conta-Ining fir, polar birch, and
sedge. All of these types form a series of ecological associations
which change as the forest.descends from the well-drained high intez6
stream areas to sphagnum Imarshes in the lowlands. The ground water
level gradually rises as the elevation drops, and the heavy podsol
clays change to peat and marsh soils. Fir forests in the flood
plains (with bilberry and , large grasses, digyma and grasses)
are quite'dense (up to O.Jr,aesxsehsibit a greater productivity (up to
class II), contain an almost constant admixture of larches, harbor
no psychrophytes, and, in many places, have a ground clover of large

ABSTRACT: The authors study the irregaarities in the variation of cutting stress
components during turning of noncircular surfaces. This was done experilientally on a
screw cutting lathe with a 300 = swing and 1500 mm between centers. The unit was .',
