Boklady, v. 139, no. 4, 1961, 892-694 TEXT: The authors investigated the system KF-ZrF by& 1) differential 4 thermal analysis and 2) X-ray phase analysis. Publications on the melting- point diagram of this system are very scanty. The authors produced XF by dehydration of KF02H20; ZrF 4was prepared from (NH 4 )3 ZrF7by distilling off NE4F in a CO2 current. (NH 4)3ZrF7 was eynthetized by methods of G. A. Yagodin and V. 1. Tarasov (Ref. 91 ZhNXh, 1, vyp. 9, 1987 (1960)). Melts with less than 33-3% ZrF4 were prepared-from XF and K 2ZrF6' and those with more than 33,3~ ZrF by fusing calculated amounts of K ZrF ) ZrF 4 2 6 and (KH4 3 7 in a CO2 current. A120 3 served as a standard. In order to reduce losses of ZrF 40 the melts (0-5 9 each) were entered into the furnace which had previously been heated to a temperature slightly higher than the melting point of the melt (930-940'C). The current was switched off after some minutes, and the cooling curve was recorded. This was the procedure with melts containing more than 33-3% ZrF 4- For other meltsp both cooling and heating curves were recorded. 2)a Crushed alloys were alued to Pyrex by means of zapon lacquer. Roentgenograms of XF And of k1loys bonUixiing much XF were taken in coaled Pyrex capillaries. The authors used cameras of the type PKA-57 (RD-57) with Fe radiationj for I2ZrF6 at 260 and 34000, a "Unicam" amers, with a GCBAT(BBVLT) tube and a copper anode was used. Fig. I shows the phase diagram of the system KP-ZrF 4' The authors established that the ZrP4 synthetizaa by them is a monoolinia modification. Its heating curve shows Card 2A 25857 S/020/61/139/004/017/025 Investigation of the system XF-ZrP4 B103/B206 endothermic effects at 612 and 68500 which correspond to transformations in the solid state. The effect at 61200 was missing with repeated heating* From 8800C onward the differential curve shows a strong deviation, since ZrF4 is highly volatile, At 903500 there is an endothermic effeot which corresponds to the malting of UP 4* If ZrT 4 in a platinum cruoible ie put into a previously heated furnace, its cooling curve shows a solidification effect at 903t5oC. With further cooling a polymorphous transformation occurs at 685 OC. The melting point of XF was found to be 8500C. In the system KF-ZrF they ascertained the following fluorine zirconatess 1) 1 ZrF 4) X3Z-r2F,l, 5) X Zr6F31# 3 1 71 2) X,Zr2p,,, 3) 12ZrF6 7 and 6) KZrF 5' 1) and 6) melt congruently at 923 and 45500, respectively. 2) and 3) are formed by peritectio reactionst Card 3/6 25857 8/020/61/139/004/017/025 Investigation of the system IF-ZrF 4 B103/B206 848 0c 5650C K3ZrF 7 + melt (KF, ZrF 4 ) K5 Zr2F131 K3 ZrF7 + melt (Kf-;Ijrr 4'(----LA2'j'rR6* 4) and 5) only exist in the solid state at 327 ~nd 3800C, respectively. So far, the following types of structures have been found:-p-quartzf a-quartz, 0-cristobalite, and a-cristobalite. The present paper describes a new, rhombic modification of BeF which is assumed-to be of structure similar 2 to tridymite. This modification had already been detected during the thermal analysis of the NaF - BeF2 ByStem*(A.V. Novoselova, M.Ye. Levina, and M.P. Savellyeva, ZhNKh, v. 3, 2562 (1956)), but it could not be found by X-ray photography. The extent of the 6xtraction of iron (III) from hydrochloric solutions as dependent on the concentration of the hydrochloric acid and the concentration of the tribenzylamine in chloroform, the concentration of the iron in the initial solution, the duration of the extractiong the number of subsequent extracl;ions, and the ratio between the organic and the aqueous phase were investigated. An 8% tribenzylamine solution was used as ext:~act- ing agent. The results obtained show that the extraction of iron (III) from hydrochloric solutions depends to a high degree on the concentration of the hydrochloric acid in the solution.. The complete extraction was obtained with 8n HC1. A complete extraction is obtained at a content of 2,02 mg/ml - 40,40 mg/ml Fe. Larger quantities of iron are not completely extracted. The equilibrium between the aqueous and the organic phase is obtain9d within 2-3 minutes. If the ratio between organic phase and aqueous phase is 1:11 the iron io completely extracted. TITLE-, On tho Paleogeography of tjj(j Sea of 0,1d3.0tsjc PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii nauk SSSR, SP-riya r-eo,-rafi- 1j R ches1kaya, 19591.) Yr 2,, pp 121 24 (USS ) This is a resum6 of the ilivest~i["-ations carried out by the authors since 191:~-'D in the Sea of 016qot;sj~ and the Boring Sea, to obtain data on the fossilEi of diatoms, pollen and spores on the -snirfac(-% as as the deeper strata of 1he silt of these basins,, The data is needed for the study of the paleogeo- -Ic conditions of the era, i,,rhen -raph- the sedimcnts formed. The authors used a nluaiber of new devices., among which new tubes for core sampling were of foremost importance. The arti-c-li-e is subdivided iato two main sections, the first referring to tune fossils of the silt surface and the second to the fossils of Card !/3 Uhe deeper strata. As to the fi--st Group, diatoms C30V10-59-2-2/20, On -the Paleo-eof-raphy of the Gea of Okhotsk L U were studied in the Sea of Okhotsk at 132 sites, in the DerinG Sea at 158. Spores and pollen vere studied at 82 sites of the Sea of Okhotsk. slis tc t ia-4 the latter, the irr-.-es i P t'~on showied that most of the sea sections are characterized by the occurrence of pollen and spores belonginG exclusive- ly -to a sylvan flora. Only in the sediments ofthe northern sections did the aut-hors discover a Cam- plex of pollen and spores correspondin,-, to a flora of mixed i-~iood and tundra character. Diatoms abound in the sediments of the Sea of 0_'-~iotsk as viell as the Bering Sea. At present diatoriaceous silts are forming with a content of amorphous silica var7ing C) from 30 to 55;'o (Bezru'r-uov, 1955, Lisitsyn, 1( 155). The deeper strata .-,ere examined in 37 core samples taken from the bottom of the Sea of Okhotsk and 22 from the BerinG Sea. The !on-est core samples measured 33.5 m, the shortest 1 m. The long I~ard 2/.-) core samples were taken with -the hydrostatic -round 0 SO-1/10-59-2-2/291, On the Faleogeo-raphy of the Sea of Okiiotsk tube, of SYsoyev-._-,udinov type. from the deep-vater depressions of both seas. The authors report in de- tail on the results of the analysis of two core samples taken in the Sea of' Okhotsk on sites '1140" and"1907" (see gra-ph 1). The authors conclude that both paleontological methods proved sufficiently promisinG in the study of the history of contem- poraneous sea basins. In ad-2ition to the above- mentioned names, t-he scientist Udintlsev is referred to in connection vit-h the prGblem of the c2hawre in the distribution of fossils iii- the strata .due to chan-ez in -the confiGuration and level of the senas.
