ABSTRACT: Experimental data are given which characterise tho phame
transformations and structural propertios of the polyeaters
obtained from aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and glycol.
To elucidate the phase states of the polymers, thermal,
thermographic, X-ray and microscopic methods of analysis
have 'been applied, supplemented by the calorimetric
determination of the latent heat of crystallisation of the
polyesters. X-ray data confirmed the, existence of lon,g
range order and crystal-optical studies showed that,
depending on their chemical structures, polyesters
crystallise as spherulites of two types. The polyesters
were obtained by the direct condensation, without catalysts,
of the poly-methylene series of acids, from succinic to
sebacic, with various glycols. In appearance, -the polymers
Cardl/4 were ,,rhite opaque solids or transparent viscous liquids.

.Their molecular weights varied between 3 000 and 10 000.
Thermal analysis and D.J.A. dingrams are reproduced and
show the material to behave like low-mol cc ular-wei &ht
substances forming Bertholide compounds. A phase diagran
supports this conclusion. 11cat changes accompanying phase
changes were measured cailorimetrically, the heat of
crystallisation of these polyesters being about 0.30 kcal/g
of polymer. Data on 7 different materials are tabulated.
X-ray pcw&r photographs were taken of eacli specimen, some
monochromatised by reflexion from pontacry-4hritol, but
results were not very clear because line widths depended on
several fai;tors besides crystallite size. Materials were

chains form radial spherulites. The influence of
mcchatnical deformation on the crystallisation kinetics
was studled. It was established that grindin.- the prep-
arations at the time of crystallisation did not eliminate
the sipherulitos but promoted the fori-iiation of more and
finer spherulites which occurred in Ghains. The reasons
for spherullte formation are still obscure and must be
examined further as they are of great importance.

that the mechanism of protective action of AO is determined by the presence of the N

In aq. SoIns. of chloraidne an appreciable quantity of Na0a by fonned
by bV&o3.ysD3., but uq, soln. is stable if protected from Ught.
Chlorami-ne-solnse,p therofore., can be used to replace the mors 4LVensive
17 and.the less stable gidIns. of C12 or NaOC1. Thus ferrocyariLde can be
oxidized to ferricyanide the excess of chloramine soln. detd. by adding
NaHW3.0 a very little KI: and starch and titrating with Na arsenite soln.
Similhrly, CKS-is cmidiz(d to 00-and SOh-wA the excess chloramine ititrated.
TV-dmixte is oxidized to N. and can be litrated directly vdth the chlorardne
reagent after adding NaTICO a little KI and starch, H3POP can be oxidized
to H3P03 by chloravdne in ~.24 N H2%h. After 24 hrso W 2 go of KI and
titra-te-with thiosulfato. CS2 dissolVed in 5% KOH in EWH is oxidized by
chloranane to K xanthogenate and test shows that the reaction is nearly
