TEXT: Peculiarities are considered in tracking reflected waves
when working according to the method of conjugate non-longitudinal
profiles with symmetrically disposed detonation points. The follow-
ing advantages of the described method are noted in comparison with
theiesults obtained on longitudinal profiles: 1) The improved
tracking of reflections, especially from shallow-lying boundaries,
and 2) the g37eater accuracy for calculating the effective velocity.
Methods of processing the obtained material -- calculating the ef-
fective velocity and determing the position of the reflecting boun-
daries -- are described, thqse being valid for areas with seismic
boundaries inclined at small angles. /Tbstractor's note: Complete

ABSTRACT: The investi, gatio.n considers one of the,;types of interferenqq registered
mainly in the border zones of the Pre-Pliocene erosion. The time of arrival of
such.interference waves varies from 0.6 to 1.9 sec. In order to study the forma-
tion of these waves, seismic receivers were spaced 5 m apart. It was foand that
the intensity and quantity of interference depends on the blast deptF. Further,
it was shown that the formation of interference waves is connected with the Pre-
Pliocene reflecting iurface. The authors also describe the different frodes of
diss6ination of inte?ference waves. These paths'may be combined In a'single
stratum. It is very, important In studying Interference waves to consider the
fields of registration. The knowledge 'of interference waves and kinematic features
eirlows gne to forecast their appearance on the seismograph. The best way of elimi-

TITLE: Phase distortions of reflections from shallow boundaries In

ABSTRACT:
'Experiments are d6cribe4 which weire conducted during group shooting seismic
!prospecting operations in the Kuybyshev region to determine the phase
distortions of waves reflected-,from a shallow (the uppermost) interface. To
evaluate the distortions in instances involving different- parameters in the
groupiag of shots, theoretical seismograms were compiled' for (1) linear
groups of 9 boreholes along bases of d - 80 and d - 140 m with wells spaced
at intervals of 10 and 1i.-5 u~respectively, and (2). a rhomboid arra 'nger-n t
of 9 boreholes spaces at intervais of 15 n. ..The parameters_ of the medium

were set at7v W 27do"'Qsic~,* '450 'm', aina"o --Ihe-theo'r'etic'al'
seismograms were compiled for a shot interval of 1 - 425 m. Under these
.conditions, the time shift ol a reflected wave between the most distant
.seismic recorders of the array ac the end of the shot interval was 0.0032 sec.
while the time shift between adjacent stations was 0.0008 sec. In the case
of linear groupings of the sources alo 'ng extended bases (d > X - wave length),
significant phase- distortions in reflections from the shallow interface uere
,observed and thus these reflections cann6t be used to compute effective
velocities. in the case of the rhombi, ar-.ay, almost no phase distortions
.occurred in recording short time reflections from shallow boundaries. In I
cases where it is necessary that'the shots be grouped along extended bases
.to increase the quality of reflections froa deep--seated interfaces, it is
.recommended that an additional single blast,be*set'off to obtain undistorted
reflections from the shallow interfaces. (DA)

TITLE: Improving the corrosion resistance of low-carbon and low-alloy steel
welds in an alkaline medium
PMODICAL: Avtomaticheskaya svarka, no. 5, 1962, 36-43
TZ~T: Since equipiient used in the aluminum industry has to be frequently re-
paired because of caustic embrittlement of low-carbon and low-alloy steel, and
since alternative steels cost too much, the effect of stress-relieviliff on the
resistance of low-alloy steel welds to caustic embrittlement was studied, using
a method described by T.11-1. Green and A.A. Holzbaur ("The Welding Journal", No. 3,
1946). The experimental equipment comprised a carriage -with 4 gas burners pro-
ducin- a 120 anwide flame, and a water-cooling device 150 mm behind the flame.
Five steel grades were tested. Calcium and wwonitwi nitrate solutions were
used for corrosion tests. The electrode potential in specimens was measured.
The experimental results show that the best ratio between- ~jn and C in the base

metal was 1.7 : 3.0, and the fUghest potential was found in the 14(-2 (14G2)
steel - 61 mv before heat treatment, and 30 mv after. The anode zone was always
revealed directly at the welds and appears to be the result of stress concentra-
tion. It is presumed that caustic embrittlement of low-carbon steel. in strong
alkali solutions begins with the destruction of the protective surface film,
and this process is most intensive in metal at welded joints/where the anode
potential is highest, but weld defects such as pin holes, slag inclusions, or
spills also cause stress concentration and anode potential. Conclusions: (1)
Thermo-mechanical treatment considerably improved the resistance of low-carbon
and low-alloy steels to caustic embrittlement; (2) welds in 19 F (19G), M 16(2
(~116S) and er.3 (St.3) steels have better resistance to caustic embrittlement
than M (M) and 14r 2 (14G2) steels; (3) the result of electrode potential
measurements show that residual welding stresses intensify the anode processes
in the weakness zone. There are 7 figures and 3 tables.

TITLE: Design problems of large scintillation Mwaters with a single photozultiplier
SOURCE: AN SSSR. Izvestiya. Seriya,fizicheskava, v. 29, no. 9, 1965, 1788-1790
TOPIC TAGS: ~scintillation counter, cosmic ray counter, nuclear scintillation counter
ABSTRACT: Scintillator-photomultiplier mutual arrangement and reflector sht4pe are
optimized to decrease the influence of particle trajectory location upon phctomul-
tiplier output and to improve reliability of registration of low-density cosmic ray
particles. In the experimental-arrangement (Fig. 1), a 50 x 50 x 5 cm plastic scin-
tillator occupied only one quadrant of the 100 x 100 cm reflecting container base.
A single FEU-44 photomultipUer was used with its axis along the axie of the con-
tainer. A diffusely reflecting Wattman paper (a high-grade Bristol drafting board)
was used as the reflecting surface, covering. Thelocation of particle trajeatories
was determined by a telescope system using $I-5G counters. The area of-the deintil-
lator vas divided into 16 equal. areas 12 x 12 cm, and selectionsIvere made of verti-
cal trajectory particle assages within a solid~angle of .014 sterad., Arrang'
