TITLE: The ion guide and beam-introduction system of the
proton synchrotron

TEXT: From experimental work on the 4 Mev electrostatic generator
used for beam injection, it was found that the diameter of,the
matched beam in the accelerator chamber would be.notles~s than
about 25 "lm. The injection sy'stem was therefore designed to use V~
plane condensers instead of slat condensers. As the phaae volume
of the beam was four times greater than expected, the focusing was
strengthened by the use of quadrupole lenses. The beam
introduction system is shown in Fig.2, where C1,2 3 are
condensers, Cl is constructed from stainle5s, steei plates,
~ = 600 min, h 35 mm, bent to a radius of 4000 mm,
V = 80 kV, W 171 mr, 6V/V = 1.5 x lo-3.

C2 has 220 mm, h 20 mm, V = 62 XV, w 85 mr and
L V/V = 2.2 X lo-3. C3 has ~ = 220_mm, h 80 mm,
V = 56 kv, w = 9.6 mr, LVA, ;a 1 x 10 2, where ~ is length of
the plates, h is the distance between themV w is the angle
through which the beam is bent and AV/V is the required stability.
Calculation on the-design of the system and its adjustment are
given, in particular design details are presented on the first
condenser Cl, the electrostatic quadrupole lenses, the ion guide
and the magnetic quadrupole lenses. The electrostatic quadrupole
lens consists essentially of four stainless steel plates with a
hyperbolic profile and the magmetic quadrupole lens is calculated
for a gradient of 350 Oe/cm and a length of 15 cm with a magnetic
aperture of 60 Mm. There are 12 figures.

TITLE: Design characteristica of the phase motion of
particles in the proton synchrotron

TEXT: The parameters defining-the phase motion of the charged
particles are calculated in the linear.approximation and tabulated.
From the prescribed fraction of lost pa:rticles the tolerances on
noise and resonance disturbances in the electronic equipment-and
the magnetic field are calculated. The calculations take into
account the adiabatic damping. These tolerances are more . .
stringent than actually required*w:Lth feedback ihto the control
unit of information on the beam. However, in the initial phases
of adjustment of the system, stable acceleration is required dt
least in the initial part of the cycle. There are I figure and

presented in the article indicate the effectiveness of the

is considered that further adjustmentis will be made in the course

programming the control frequency the intensityi. position,
and frequency and amplitude of tranavorB6 oscillation of the beam
is measured in three stages: (1) during the first revolution%
(2) with a circulating beam and (3) with acceleration.
For measurements on the first revolution long afterglow
scintillation screens are used which are either observed visually
or by means of a television camera. The screens are placed In
the sections between magnet blocks; 15 in the initial part and

deviate by more than 1.5 cm from the axis during the first
revolution. Circulating beams without acceleration are obtainod
which continue for 20 to 30 revs. Tho circulating current in
determined by means of a flight tube and the transverse
oscillation frequency with an electrostatic probe with double
vertical and horIzontal plates. Scintillation screens in tha
form of a grid with 855'. transmission .3ro used to show'the beam
position and diameter for 5 to 10 revs. The beam diameter is
shown to be about 4 cin under normal condition3. Investigations
are carried out on the optimum form of the frequency- time
relation for holding the beam in orbit. The width of the trapping
region is - 3 Kc/s for an initial frequency of 750 Kc/s which
agrees well with theoretical estimates. Preliminary adjustment
permitted the attainment of 6.2 Gov proton.;*and after adjustment
7.2 Gov protons wore obtained on October 25, 1961. Thu usual
intensity on a normal cycle lies in therango 3 to 5 x 109.

a closed orbit when the correction system is turned on are explored. It is also

ABSTRACT: The VNIIPTUGLEMASh 1A11-Union Scientific Research Institute of
Hoisting and Conveying Machinery for Coal), in co-operation with
industrial plants, carried out work on the development and introduc-
tion of the process of nitrocarburizal ion (N) of parts of pneurnatic
drills and han-imers, mine-shaft drilling and boring machines, etc.
that are exposed to wear. N was performed on a special apparatus
(plan adduced) and in industrial furnaces of the plant. Lamp kerosene
and NH3, fed into the furnace separately. were used as the carburizer.
The optimum NH3-to-ke:rosene ratio is - 0.6 - 0.86 liters NH3 to 1 cc
keros ene. Gas pressurE' in the furnace should be 90 - 150 mm water
Two types of N process, a direct and a stepwise process, were devel-
oped: The direct method is used for machine parts of 15K]i '. Z 0 ~ 2 OKh,
l2KhN2A, and other steE-IS with a I mrn deep nitrocarburized layer

temperatures (840 - 8700 C); after N the parts are precooled in air or in the fur-
nace to 800 - 8200 and then quenched in oil. The stepwise procedure is used for
machine parts with a >0.9-mm depth of the layer and proceeds in two stages; In
the first stage the surface layers are saturated with C alone at 900- 9400; in tliv
second stage, simultaneously with further carburization, N saturation is carried
out at 830 - 8500. Process data are adduced. Tests showed that wear resistance
of nitrocarburized parts is 10076 higher than that of carburized ones. The applica-
tion of N afforded the substitution of 15.Kh sr.eel for the expensive I2'Kh_?N-IA steel
for spiral rods. The heat treatment cycle is shortened by 30 - 50% in comparison
with gas carburization.

ABSTRACT: The success of the use of high-frequency alternating current
in chemical analysis wad in production control is above all
dependent on the fact whether handy apparatus simple in con-
struction and handling, which are sensitive to concentration
measurements in a wide range of concentration, are placed at
disposal. In the present paper a device is described which
meets these requirements to a higher degree than a previou.61y
described apparatus (Refs 1,2). In connecting the cell for
high-frequency titration to one arm of a measuring bridge un
alternating current it is not possible to obtain a distinct
zero point by balancing. The reason for this is a phase dis-
placement in the arms of the bridge and an additional balanc-

can only be removed with difficulty alternating-current
bridge cirouitc haVO L111611ertO not been used in high-f-requency
titrations. The authors of the present paper developed a
bridge circuit for high-frequency titrations free of this
trouble. By means of this arrangement the zero indication of
the galvanometer is ol-tained without any difficulties bust
as in ordinary four-armed bri4ge circuits with direct current.

formed in a wide range of concentrations (0,5n-1.16-3n).
Moreover different reactions can thus be investigated in non-
-aqueous media. The manifold possibilities of application
of the device are shown in the paper.
