ABSTRACT' Spectral emission of the a~Eon~plasma Eene~ated in the constant cuTTent
,plasmat~n ~d flowlnK through a supemsoni~ nozzle has been investigated. The 9 ec
~density ranEe was 1012 cm-3 to 3'1015 cm'3 and elect~on tempe~atu~e~was~5000 to 2500�K.
The spectl~m was found to contain the lines of emcon, hydPoEen, recomf
um and molecular bands of nit~oEen (second positive system). The ~elatlve llne inten-
si~y was detenained by usinE Balme~ lines fo~ calib~atlon. The spectrum was studied
as a function of ~he ~adial position in the stream and the distance f~om the end of
the nozzle. The population density of levels with p~inclpal quantum numbers ~=g and 5
increased with inc~easin[ distance to the axis and was found inverted a~ low elect~on
densities. At the same time the ~=3 and ~ as well as ~:6 levels did not differ from
t/DC: 533.9

the equilibrium distribution. Relative population invez~ion and change with radial
distance is explained by the collisions of a second kind between hydrogen and argon
atoms. The authoz~ also note the interesting result that not only does simple inve~-
sion occur, but also at lower densit_~te~s the condition for light amplification

The vapor pressure of UF4 was measured in the temperature in-
terval of from 875 - 100000. Argon purified from oxygen and
steam served as carrier gas. Figure 1 shows the apparatus,
figure 2 a microphotograph (1:24) of the UF4 crystals taken
from the condensatiotx tube. The vapor pressures (in n-.Hg), mea-
sured for the temperatures 875, 900, 950, 975 and 1000u are
given. The first three values, corresponding to the vapor
pressure in equilibrium with the solid salt follow the equa-

TEXT: The oxidation of cyclohexanone by nitric acid has been much less
investigated than that of cyclohexanol. Cyclohexanone is oxidized with
61.3% nitric acid to adipic acid at 85-90�C with a yield of 65-73% of
the theory (Ref.7). The investigation of this reaction has gained con-
siderable importance in recent years since the oxidation o~ cyclohexanone,
like that of cyclohexanol and similar compounds, forms the basis of the
industrial method of producing adipic acid (Ref.2). The authors studied
the effect of pressure on the course a~xd yields of oxidation of cyclo-
hexanone by nitric acid, as well as the dependence of the yield in di-
carboxylic acids on the composition of the cyclohexanol - cyclohexanone

mixtures during their oxidation by nitric acid. Pure cyclohexanol and
60% HNO$ were used for the experiments at a temperature of 156�C. The
oxidatiSn of cyclohexanone without the use of pressure was conducted
at 75-80�C. The authors made experiments of cyclohexanol oxidation by
nitric acid in the presence of urea nitrate. Table 5 and Fig.4 show the
effect of pressure on the yield of cyclohexanone oxidation by nitric
acid. Table 6 gives data on the yield in gaseous reduction products of
nitric acid. The authors studied the oxidation of cyclohexanol under at-
mospheric pressure and in the presence of urea, and found that under
these conditions cyclohexanol oxidation begins at 70�C only (without ad-
dition of urea at room temperature), and that the adipic-acid yield
drops considerably with increasing urea nitrate concentration (Table 7).
The results of oxidation of cyclohexanol mixed with cyclohexanone are
given in Tables 8 and 9, and in Fig.5. Cyclohexanone is oxidized by
nitric acid at higher tempermtures than cyclohexanol~ the adipic-.acid
yield being much lower than with cyclohex~nol. In the first steps cyclo~
hexanol is oxidized to cyclohexanone; the end product is nitrous acid

Abstract :

A description of a voltage, stabilizer circui% designed for the supply
of photo~lectrondc multipliers. The stabilizer represents a hi&h'
frequency oscillator, employing a 6P9 tube (the screen grid of which
is used as the control grid), with a feedbackloop consisting of a
voltage divider and a three-stage amplifier (two stages employing 6N9
tubes and one stage produced by the control grid of the 6P9 tube).
The ~t~bllizatlou coefficient of the circuit is on t~e order of
x lO~, aud the output resistance is approximately 500 ohms. The out-
put is 1.5 watts.

ABSTRACTs In June 1956 there took place a seminas-y at the Engel'gardt
Obsenvatory on radio-echo observations of meteors� The author
publishes a repor~ on the instruments developed by him for
performing the observations mentioned above. ~he central
