ACC NRs AP6028568 sh oidd be simulated. Taking the works of Professors V. V. Sharonov and V. S. Troitskiy in--o c on side ration, as well as data obtained by Luna-9, it is concluded tha't the lunar surface has a hard structure; from an analysis of Luna-9 data. it is possible to conclude that the strength of the moon' s surface is about I kg/cM2. During its operation Luna-9 increased its inclination 6.50 and turned 3*. Although the reasons for this have not yet been. de- termined, it can be assumed that the position change was somehow connected with the stoniness of the surface. The lunar surface in the Luna-9 landing area. iii., dotted with numerous stones and clods of various sizes, from several [centimeters to several decimeters. The Luna-9 landed in an 18-m-diameter, cra%er with a depth of about 0.7 m. The presence of several small craters with steep slopes (up to 550 ) was noted. All of these lunar surface details must be taken into consideration in developing a mobile automatic lunar station. The initial sca7'~es for modeling are length, modulus of ela sticity, j!raaierials, and acceleration of gravity. All other scales (i.e., mass density, c;peed, forces, etc. ) needed to develop an MALS model, and to convert the c!xperimental results obtained from the study ?f an actiial scale model of a ACC Mt Ar-6028568 lunar station, can be deduced from the three main scales mentioned above on the basis of the similarity of conditions. To have similar conditions, it 'is necessary that the 'AMALS models and their undercarriages be made frolm materials with the same Poisson' s ratio and coefficient. of friction as those of the Pall-scale design. The gravity scale is determined by the experimental conditions. The final selection of model dimensions and materials is made, JaRing into account the ovzrall dimensions and capabilities of the testing equApinent, pressure chambers, and test ranges. The development of MALS Jaodels built to 1/6, 1/3, and 1/1 scales is discussed. -If the dimensions of a model are* decreased by six times, it is better to make the model from .the same materials as tho full-scale design. For the 1/6 scale model, the Iine ar s p, e a d 'Scale - is equal to 1. Running tests as well as some op'era-- A ..ional tests of a 1/6 scale model can be carried out in a pressure chamber :sim0at.ing the lunar vacuum. Due to the small value of the scale of mass, !however,. the develop:,aient of a mobile model with such small overall di- mensions, while reta:ining similarity, can create a number of difficulties. It is considerably simpler to develop an MALS zriodel.on a scale of '1/3 or 1/2.- In developing a full-*scale model, the scale of mass should be six times smaller than full-scale mass.- In this case, a.full-scale under- - carriagejqF~ the model is developed from full-scale materials. The re- AcCi4l- AP6028568-------------- [ !in ..n ain' g elements (payload, structural parts, etc. ) should be decreased so fthat the total mass of the model will be six times less than. that of the complete 1':-.'ull-scale vehicle. The lunar station model will have the following specifi- -atio;.-is: the drive power and the lineaz, and angular speeds will be increased Iay 2.5 times, angular acceleration will be increased by 6 times * and the mass and inertia moments of the model will be decreased by 6' times. The testing period will be -decreased 2.5 times as compared with the full- scale model; the value of the energk (of* operation) and the for ns. aetinLy pL on th~ model will be equivalent to their full-scale values. ,Orig. art. Similar test performed with oxygen but with a 13 kev electron gun. Inthe nitrogen experiments, the stronipst lines were caused by the first negative system (ns) bands of molecular + 112 followid by the weaker (by a factor of 2--3) first positive system (Ps) of nolecular nitrogen. The change in distribution of relative intensities of N2 I-ps.,N21 c!-ps, and N~ 1-ns was also investigated. The relative intensities for 100 ev and 33 kev encrgies in nitrogen are given in tabular form. The relative intensities of these lin(-s are also plotted as a function of the electron energiea and show (in z.11 cases'; a sharp decrease as the electron energy is increased. The results are compared vith 37 kev proton excitation studies of nitrogen and are found to show the same emisaion bands. Fundamentally, a similar type of emission lines is observed in IJP(c) A L 40051-6S -TCC Nil AP 7737 the W -al spectra as in these laboratory tests. The strongest lines In oxygen were tho:ia generated by the first negative bands of 2. However, the laboratory emission spectra of oxygen differed considerably from the auroral spectra. Similar tests in air showed that the results were additive. It is concluded that kev electron-3 play a largerole in auroral phenomena, however, slow electrons seem to play an Dqually strong role, and a large amount of oxygen dissociation exists in an auroral lisplay. The comparison shows that "whiskers" mainly emerge at the boundary of the! , magnetic field H I, = 0 polarities and at the edge of the penumbra of large spot~jr the area of transverse fields dissemination. The position of "whiskers" in rela'- tion to the magnetic field was studied with maps of longitudinal and transveroe~' fields obtained with the BST magnetograph. The study confirms the conclusion Card - l-IL- UDC: 523. 74+ 523. 75 AR6028402 c)f A. B SevSRyy that whiskers appear at points of contact of the crossing or branching out of fields.of varying directions. Examination of 13~- films of sun- spots groups, in which whiskers were observed, shows that points of whisker appearance are. in most cases, also points of increased flare brightness, The character of the luminescence of the line of metals in the whiskers was examin- ed. This indicates that the: whiskers are subjected to a selective excitation mechanism which causes the luminescence of lines with determined excitation potentials of the upper level. The appearance of flares and whiskers in the same points with a specific magnetic field configuration, the analoguous character of luminescence of the line ol metals in the flares and in the whiskers, and'also a series of other factors, indicate the possibility of their having a common nature. In most cases such a concept agrees with observations even better than Doppler affect. Movement velocities of these jets (, 300 km/ of, out to lie of the sec) observed turn same order as mean velocities extension and contraction of' flares on the limb. In individual cases the best agreemdnt with observations is shown by Doppler broadening due to macroscopic disorderly movements at speeds of -1100 km/sec. The analysis of profiles of emission of an E-ruptive flare on the lf.mb presents a rather complicated picture of comparatively blow movement of the pratrusion as a whole and more retpid extension of a region giving rise to broad em-ission. 15uperposition of emission in such a multi-step movement is fairly well presented by Doppler distribution. T he analysis of emission of metallic lines warrants the conclusion that it can originate in the chro-flospheric region surrounding the "nucleus" of a flare or in a region in whic-h originates strongly broadened hydrogen emission. To this aim, the good spectrograms of Itmoustaches" taken on July 29., 1959 by means of an echelette grating were selLected. All absorption lines are found to be shifted toward tho violet. To clarify the nature of these shifts, photometric sections of several lines of different intensities were made at an "undisturbed" spot and at a spot of bending. The lineis at the: bending spot are broadened and, on the whole, are shifted toward' the violet as shown in Fig.2. The shifts of Fe and Fe+ 1:LneS red by means of a M~JP-12 (MIR-12) microscope. One of the methods of ensuring such an envc'4-ope, viz. , a met atio [hod of piecewise-step approximation with time-uniform discretiz consiiered. The accuracy,of the envelope, in this method, is determined by the er of tine-discretization elements. The number of these elements should be choseni,11,71 the basis of 3pecific permissible deviations, because the step structure of th" simulated signal m;W :~*-iclude adreLssible'as wel.1 as inadmissible deviations. Re.'ations for definite parameters of piece-vrise-step signals are derived; they can be use( with various shapes of sigrLils. These parameters are: number of discretization elem(*Its; enor-r of piecewise-step pulse; spectral characteristics; active duration and ; I~tive width of the spectrum. These parameters for a piecewise-step signal- and for ai* ideal sign&~L are compared. Bibliography of 4 titles. A.' 0. E3, 301(hG;NA and 25Kh2G-NTA steel were melted using AN-291 slag f studying the e'ffect oj' chimnical composition of steel on the recovery of aluminum slag. The test specimens were cut into oblong templates for studying the chemic heterogeneity of the meta.l. Variation of average aluminum concentration with re to ingot height in-given. Industrial data shows that the quantity of aluminum r covered from slag increases by 0.01-0.06% as silicon content in the metal is inc from l.16 to 3.22%. Data on silicon and aliminum content in 3OKhGSNASh steel,, p cessed by correlation analysis, sbcni that silicon is responsible for sauntinum re ct ed 1/2 UDC: 669. 6 ACC NRt AP6032554 from slag. It should be pointed out that the recovery of aluminum during melt, ing s not steady. Aluminum content in the metal increases during the first lart of sili m steel melting and decreases subsequently. The decrease in aluminum recovery is ex. ,plained by the accumulation of silica and a decreasing alumina content in the slag~- IThis brings about a higher silicon zoncentration and thus decreases aluminum. concei itration. The use of slag materials which ensure stable aluminum concentration Witt respect to ingot height mitke it possible to obtain metal with uniform mieebanical aj i- other properties. He mentions the organization of many higher schools within the period from 1921 to 1939. During the Soviet regime the numb of vuzos in the Ukraine increased by 5 times and the number sludents amounts at present to 325t000. In 1955P 459547 en- gineeral agronomists and other specialists left the vuzes, increasing to 0,804 in 1956, and to 53,644 in 1957, Vuzes of the Ukrainian wastern areas released 9,710 psecialists i 1957. The development of secondary special education was ve succesuful. In 19.45/46 there wore 532 technical schools wit 164,089 pupil sI in 1950/51 this figure increased to 584 and 227,76i1 and in 1956/57 to 586 and 3599177- Correspondence a evening courses have an important part in the educational ey In 1957, 146,826 of the Ukrainian students were trained by correspondence and in evening courses. Evening courses were introduced during the past 2 or 3 years at the Kiyev Polytee Card 1/3 nic Institute and -various other institutes. Correspondence Success of Higher Education in the Ukraine 3-11-3/17 courses were established at 13 vuzes. Great attention is de-t voted to the formation of a highly qualified teaching staff. Presently, 18,816 teachers are working at Ukrainian vuzes I am(jag them 7,553 dotsents and candidates of sciences and 879 profell,7- sors and doctors of sciences. In 1953, competition was introll duced for the replacement of the posts of prof essors, doteenti't teachers and assistants. Since the ideological training is &~e very important factor in the Soviet educational system ' an k institute for improving the qualification in Marxist-Leninist& educati.on was established In 1949 Rnd r'eorganized In 1955/56 a Invest_~,gations conducted by vuzen in accordance with industril."i contracts increase every year. In 1956, they amounted to 40-7j f, million rubles. In order to improve scientific research in g vuzes, 6 laboratories for fundamental research will be createil. at the Kharkov and Kiyev polytechnic instituteN and at the a Llvov University. Industrial ministries assigned funds to th~ vuzes which will help organize three laboratories at the KharAov Polytechnical Institute covering fat chemistryturbines, comiine and traotor engines. At the expense of the coal industry, lago- ratories will be established at the Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsi,'. Card 2/3 mining institutes and at the Donets Industrial Institute.
