Results are d4scribed*o"i''the initial investigations of a light field in turbid
liquid media illuminated with sunrays (a flux of a 50 x 50 cm cross section)
inclined to the surfaces of the media. The experimental setup, consisting
of a special container, a heliostat, and a photoelectric polariueter, is
described in detail. It was determined that, analogous to other turbid
madia such 'as, the atuosphem and colloids, neutral points and regions of
"negativelt po~arixation also exist in turbid liquid media. The experiments

Abstract In order to get better all-year and uninterrupted
production of steam from the small boiler-rooms widely
used in oil fields, the author recommends periodical
treatment of boiler water with "Antidepon", a chemical
consisting of caustic soda and certain other components,
which prevents formation of scale in boilers and facil-
itates blowing-outs. The author also suggest that a
chemical "indicator" solution (a compound of phenol-
phtalein with titrated hydrochloric acid) should be-Used
to check the alkalinity of water in boilers, and that
the course for firemen include specific instructions on
this subject.

TEXT: Sulfonation of organic compounds bymeans of complex compounds of
so is becoming of increasing theoretical and practical importance. Of
grht interest in this respect is dioxane sulfotrioxide, which was sug-
gested as a sulfonating agent for the sulfonation of various aromatic
compounds (Ref- 4). For this purpose, two dioxanates, O(CH 2CH2)2OSO 3 and
03S(CH2CH2)2OSO3' were precipitated from carbon tetrachloride and ethylene
chloride solutions. C. M. Suter (Ref. 4) points out that the synthesis of
the dioxanates of sulfur trioxide by direct reaction of the two components
involves considerable difficulties due to the occurrence of "strong
charring", In order to avoid the latter, C. M, Suter first dissolved
dioxane in an inert solvent (carbon tetrachloride or ethylene chloride)

and, on passing sulfur trioxide into the solution, obtained the dioxanates
as white flaky precipitates, The present work was undertaken to investigate
whether the dioxane complexes of sulfur trioxide might not be obtained by
a reaction without a solvent and in the gaseous, instead of the liquid,
state. The complexes of dioxane and SO3 were synthesized by a direct
reaction of dioxane and sulfur trioxide, both in the vapor state, in a
manner that excluded charring of the final product, According to analytical
data, the ratio of the components (SO and dioxane) in the complex is 2:1.
The forma'tion rate of the above complhAcan be regulated by varying the
evaporation rate of dioxane and ulTu--r~rioxide by temperature change.

the Ni content in the alioy, given in grams (a) and percents (b), and 7)
C02 content in waste gases. The tests were carried out in autoclaves at
1000- 2000 and a pressure of 150 - 200 atm~ In Table 2 test results obtain-
ed with Co-Al alloy (45:55) using a 25% KOH solution for activation are
shown (legend 1) to 7) as in Table 1).- In both cases an intensive reaction
of CO took place according to the system 2CO-*C+CO2; showing considerable
quantities Of 002 in the waste gases and carbon black in the.catalyzate
(Tests 1 and 2 in Table 1 and Test 3 in Table'2). The tests were carried
out on Ni-Al and Co-Al alloys cast in crucibles. The carbon monoxide ob-
tained by the reaction of sulphuric acid on the formic acid was collected
in a gas container, and its purity tested by a F7z1(VTI) eudiometer on
samples taken from the gas container and the buffer, The composition of the
gas compressed at 350 atm in a special buffer and piped from the gas ocnta~Jner
to the autoclave was: 00 - 95~/L, C02 - 0-3/-, 02 - 0-7~6, E2 - 0%, CnHm - O.Y-,
and gas residues (N2) - 2.75P. -The extraction process is described in detail,
