various diseases of the veins, neurosis, and others. Mere
was only one case of exacerbation in the 80 patients studied,
and both immodiato and long-rango effects proved highly

Abstract; Problems pertaining to the automatic control in
the saturation operation are presented. A scheme
of an automatically controlled saturation gas feed,
developed by the authors is reviewed. Its flow
rate is regulated by an impulse received from a
liquid stream as well as from a pH meter situated
in the !.nc~iUng liquid stream.

TITLE: The IVth Congress of Polish Technicians
PERIODICAL: Przemys3: Chemiczny, v- 39, no. 12, 1960, 737 - 739
TEXT: The author, chairman of the Stowarzyszenie Naukowo Techniczne
Iniynier6w i Technik6w w Polsce (Scientific-Technical Association of En-
gineers and Technicians in Poland), lists several subjects closely linked
with important technical problems, which should be discussed at the IVth
Congress of Polish Engineers and Technicians. The reason for publishing
his ideas beforehand was to give the people concerned enough time for con-
sidering the matter before the Congress will meet. In the first part of
his article the author discusses briefly the program and achievements of
three previous Congresses in 1946, 1952 and 1957. Problems, which in the
author's opinion should be discussed and thoroughly.elucidated at the con-
gress are the subject of the second part of this article. They are: 1)
Modernization and output increase of old plants. The decision as to which
plants deserve modernization and to what extent, requires careful considera-

tion; whether the replacement of old installations in existing buildings
by modern equipment will assure maximum space utilization etc. 2) Important
element for making the decision in this respect is the evaluation of the
technological modernity of the method to be applied; it should be thorough-
ly examined on the basis of technical and economical indices. The CongreEE
should work out some uniform methods by which the technical conditions in
plants could be judged. 3) To decide whether the Polish industry can be
modernized relying on own, not always ultra modern scientific research
achievements and experience, or whether it will be more practical to ex-
ploit other countries' scientific and practical experience and purchase ap-
proved modern methods- 4) Revision of the present trend of economy in con-
nection with scientific research progress, availability of local raw mate-
rials, trained personnel, profitableness and foreign trade balance. 5)
Utilization of coal, lignite and oil: whether to utilize them as fuel or as
raw materials for chemical industry. The same applies to the available
supply of minerals for phosphoric and potassium fertilizers. 6) Several in-
dustrially important semiproducts like soda, carbide, steel, etc. , are being
sold abroad in order to improve the balance of payment. 7) Project offices

are preparing documentation on which the respective industrial enterprises
carry out construction work. The author suggests that the whole work in-
cluding the documentation should be contractors' responsability. 8) The
Congress should su&;eut plans how to obtain more specialists for various
branches of industry and also a system of further 3elf-training of technical
personnel. 9) Consultation with technical personnel of respective plants
in matters of administration and more power of managers will secure better
administration of producing plants.

ABSTI"v%CT: Vac article discusses the various problems associated with the anticorro,
sion protection of the submerged parts of the ship's hull and the current and actual
use of paints to this end. Fainting the ship's hull as an anticorrosion measure can
be resorted to independently of the type of sacrificial anodes protection or cathode
protection used. These latter two methods have recently proved very effective when
used in conjunction with hull painting. The conditions which must prevail before the
ship's hull can be painted are detailed and the latest developments in underwater
anticorrosion paints are discussed. Of these, the type EKZS-40 paint, which can I;e
laid on at temperatures of from -250 to +35*C, has found wide application. Orig. art

tions Include fast curing resin+oI1 or slow curing oil-based anticorrosion base coatings with
two coats of surface coat paint or finish enamel for hull superstructure and bulwarks; a resin-
based heat resistant aluminum enamel or silicon aluminum enamel for smokestacks or exhaust
ducting; fast ~p-lng resin+oIl deck paint over two coats of the anticorrosion base coating or
antislip eRMI-boating over an epoxy base for steel decks; a fastcuring chlorinated rubber+
resin+plasticizer composition for cement composition decks; two to three coats of deck equip-
ment asphalt coating for anchors, anchor chains and chambers, coal bunkers, and battM
housings; a two coat brush applIcation. of a b1component bituminous epoxy for sanitation and

cooling water tanks; two coats of a base epoxy tank coating or three coats of the finish epoxy
tank coating fq fuel and ballast tank walls; a slow curing nonsolvent epoxy. for drinking water
tanks; two coats of oil resistant machine enamel over two coats of the hull base coating for
engine room machinery and piping; smokestack application for outside surfaces of steam boil-
ers; tvo coats of the hull base coating or fire resistant cabin base paint with a final coat of fire
resistant cabin enamel for walls of engine rooms and non-sleeping areas, the latter application

Acid rin;ing of marine steam boilers
SOURCE: Przeglad morski, no. 1, 1966, 47-55
TOPIC TAGS: marine engineering, steam boiler, hydrochloric acid, surface scaling,
cleaning technique
ABSTRACT: The author outlines the basic principles for using acid to remove scale
from the tubes in shipboard steam boilers. A hydrochloric acid solution is ordinaril
used which attacks the iron oxide mixed with the layers of boiler scale and bound
tightly to the pure iron. The reaction between the iron oxide and hydrochloric acid
forms ferrous chloride (FeCl2) so that the layers of boiler scale on the heating sur-
face loosen and crumble. The process takes place according to the reaction Feo+2HC1=
=FeCl2+H20. This process is accompanied by the reaction Fe+2HC1=FeCl2+2H forming
hydrogen bubbles which tear away the layer of scale as they eacape. Practical ex-
perience has shown that hydrochloric acid is most effective in loosening scale con7
taining calcium and magnesium carbonates. If the scale contains a high concentration
of silicates, sulfates or other components, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) or sodium fluorid

(Nar-) should be added to the hydrochloric acid. The acid concentration must be in-
creased to handle thicker scale layers. A concnetration of 2-3% is sufficient to
remove a 0.5 mm layer, while a 2.0-2.5 mm layer requires a concnetration of 7-8%.
The flow-through method for circulating acid through the boiler tubes to rinse them is
discussed. Comparative studies have shown that acid cleaning is about 3.5 times as
expensive as mechanical cleaning on the average. Operational data show that this type
of cleaning may be used a maximum of 9 times, i. e. once before putting the boiler into
service and 5-8 times during its entire service life. The limitations of the method
are discussed. Orig. art. has: 3 figures, 1 table.
