ABSTRACT Lecture delivered at the All Union Conference for Somioonduotors
in November 1956 at Leningrad. Thanks to Putseyko's endeavors
the condenser method for the investigation of the photo-
condvotivity of semiconductors is now widely in use, paxticularly
for the determination of the sign of photoourrent carriers ana
the spectral distribution of photoconductivity. However, when
using the condenser method it is by no means possible tit) give
a unique interpretation of all properties of photareaction
observ6d, This refers to the sign of photoreaction as well as
to the influence exercised by the nature of insulating Inter-
mediate layers on the phenomena enumerated. This paper deals
with the investigation of these problems with respect to
various semiconduculors.- Investigations revealed the presence

effect and lead to the ourvature of zones on the boundaries.
This renders the method unreliable for the determination of the
character of photoconductivity according to the sign of the
photoreaetion. Only if it were possible to control these
curvatures would a unique determination of the character of
photoconductivity be possi'Lile. In the next chapter the in-
fluenoe exercised by exterior voltage on the photoreaction for
different insulating intermediary layers is investigated with
the result that also in this case the method suggested by
Putseyko is of a very doubtfull character. The last chapter
deals with the influence exercised by constant additional
illumination, and it was found that between the effect produced
by exterior voltage on the photoreaction of HgJ and that
produced by constant additional illamination thire is great
similarity, but that the processes occurring in connection
with the two phenomena differ from each other.

TEYT-~ The effect of external voltage on the rapacitor photoeffect of
Hg12) Pb12, GdS, CdSe, CdTe, Se, Cu20, n-Ge and p-Ge semiconductors has been in-
vestigated. In case of a good Insulation (vacuum, air, polystyrene, mica) no ef-
fect of the external electric field cn the -_,a,,acItcr photceffect has been discov-
ered. When using cellophane washers having some ccriductivity, the effect. of the
external field on the capacitor photo-effect has been observed in all semiconductors
mentioned. In Hg12, Pb12 and GIS, the res4stance of which changes manifold at r-

Tlie nature of the capacitor photoelectric effect was studied in
Pb12, CdS, Cd3e, CdTe, Cu20, Se, n-type Gre, p-type Ge, and Si semiconduc-
to-~s. It was found to be analogous to the barrier or the non-barrier-type photo-
electric effects, and to be related to the curvature of the energy zones (-,t the
boundary), but also to bipolar photoconductivity. The capacitor photoelectric
effect ir, the semiconductor - cellophane system is interpreted by the Jon conduc-
tion of cellophane and by its o,...m effect upon the curvature of the energy zones
at the semiconductor boundary. The relationship between the capacitor photoelec-
-uric effect, the barrier and the non-barrier-type photoelectric effects, and the
Eecquerei effect is considered.

over the surface of a semiconductor, a special method was worked out in which the aur-

different points of the surface may differ by a factor of 10, loop or more. The ob-
served distribution of CPE; is not constant for a given samiplo and depends on the sur-
face finish, conditions on the boundary between the somicoinductor and the inulation
spacor, ate. The irregularity of the CPE distribittion may be due to various defects
of the crystal structure of the surface layer. In addition, the docrease of CPE on
the lateral faces and edges of the sample is due to the action of surface recombina-

TEXT: 'File behavior of the clectroluminescence peaks of the ZnS-Cu,Al phosphor excited by square
voltage pulses with varying amplitude, duration, and frequency was studied in order to explain tile 1111gla-
tion processes. The powdered phosphor was incorporated in a mixture of resins. A layer of lead oxide and
a vacuum-sprayed coat of aluminum served as electrodes. Tile excitation voltage was produced by means
of a f-MC-2 (GIS-2) generator with a wide-bind amplifier; luminescence of the samples was rccoided with
the aid of an (1)3Y-19 (FEU-19) photoniultiplier and an 3H0-1 (ENO-1) oscillograph The blue and green
spectral bands were separated by filters chosen in such a manner that their transmission bands should not
overkap. Measurements were made bteween 0, 1 and 1000 cps at 200 and 600lisec aid 400 and 800 v. Between
20-200 cps, at 400 v the amplitude of the first peak of the green bind increased while that of the blue band
decreased. At lower frequencies the former decreased rapidly. It is produced that the excitation energy shifts
during the pause between pulses from the deeper energy levels of the blue centers to the levels of tile gr(en

centers. At 800 v there is no increase in the amplitude of the first peak of the green hand. This is explained

circuits made of di5similar materials, for instance gold or aluminum
welded to silicon or thin films deposited on a semiconduetor or ceramic
substrate. The method combines ultrasonic welding with nimultaneous
indirect preheating of the welded parts done by passing n current pulse
through a section of the welding tool (See Fig. 1) Experiments showed
that the timing of the application of ultrasound depends on the wire
material. The best results in welding aluminum wire 0.1 mm in diameter
to gallium arsenide and silicon, or gold, tantalum or aluminum films
were achievedwith ultrasound applied 0.3-0.4 see prior to heat applica-
tion. In the case of copper wire and gold film, ultranound must be
