ABSTRACT: In the lithological-stratigraphical laboratory of the petroleum-
and gas containing deposits of the allunion scientific petroleum-
and gas research institute of the ministery of petroleum. industry
of the USSR a palaeontological study of the oligocene deposits of
the Stavropol'- area was carried oat with the spore- pollen
analysis. As material served samples of an exposure on the Kuban
in the vicinity of theBatalpashinsk-bridge (city of Cherkassk).
The two spectres which are most characteristic are characterized,
by the predominating of the gymposperm pollen: Pinus, Picea,Taxus,
Cupressaceae and up to 4o% Taxodium. Among the -an-g-ii-os-perms the
pollen of the Betulaceae: Betula, Alnus, Coyflus,Carpinus (up
to 9-14%) plays a more or less imp-orta7nt _3~61e_,_hrthermore of the
jadlar~ ac.5~L.~: Juglans, Carya and Pterocarya ( up to 6-9%). alix,
Acer, Ulmus and Tilia occur often. Semictropical plants are re-
presented by; B1
ZrtaSfj~e, Nyss-c.eae and Ilex. Palmtreas and magno-
liaceae are very rare. Fern spores and the pollen of the grass
plants as well as the of &strichos aeridae do not play a con-

es ecologically differing to a great extent speaks of the fact
that these spectra reflect apparently the vegetation of probably
different vertical zones. In this connexion the author gives de-
tails of the vegetation conditions of Taxodium distichum, with the
undergrowth, of marsh plants, in oouthern North America. He de;-
tects in general traits the similarity between the spectra of the
Khadum-age in the North Caucasus resultingfrom the spore-pollen.
and the recent flora of the southern and ccntral Atlantic states
of the USA. Rence he also concludes a similarity of the climate.
It is possible that the climate at this time was in the North
Caucasus milder than today in the mentioned regions of the USA.
There are 1 t1ble, 2 references, 1 of which is Slavic.
