Abstract : In the artificial climate laboratories of the K.A.
Timiryazev Agricultural Academy the pre-sowing proces-
sing of corn seeds by lowere(I temperatures increased
the cold resistance somewhat, althou(~4 it afflicted
the (;ermination of the secds) particularly when planted
in cold ground. The pre-sowing seed processing throuji
alternating temperatures (acoording to Voronova's me-
thod) had a positive effect on plant growth in some

caseo. Maintaining the Growine oeeds at the reduced
temperatures (accordinG to Grachev's method) had an
adverse effect on plant growth in all cases.
Warmina up the dry seeds had no marked influence on
either the sproutina of the seeds or on plant growthe
When the corn seeds are planted early in cold soil,
they should not be soaked and then further aerminated.

Title :The Di3tribution of Phosphorus in Corn
Orig Pub Kukuruza, 1957, No 3, 44-46
Abstract Me experiment was conducted in the TSKhA fy-losoew "order of
Lenin" Agricultural AcadenW imeni K.A. Timiryazev7 artificial
climate laboratory in 1952 by the marked atom technique. The
formation of the organs of fraitbearing greatly influences the
distribution of P in the plant. During the projection and
florescence of the panicle) the inflow of P into the upper
part and corn panicle occurs. After the blossoming of the pan-
icley the inflow of P is obsarved in the site of the fomqtion
of the cob. The hypothesis ic expressed that the castration
of the corn favorably influences its development, inasmuch as
the feeding matter reaches the cob at an earlier stage.

Title : Rhythmicity of the Absorption and Excretion Activities
in Boots.
OriL: Pub : Izv. Timiryazevsk. 3.-kh. akad., 1957, No 4, 181-2o6
Abstract : A study was made uf the daily and iryulue rhythm in the
root activity of the sunflower, kidney bean, tomato,
squash, and other plants cultivated in Knip's nutritive
solution. The transpiration rate in the plants was de-
terL-dr.ed by the amount 3f released sap. The P and S in
the sap was determined by the method of isotipe analysis,
and K) Ca, and nitratos by the polaroL~raphic method.
A daily periodicity In the r-,te of transpiration was

detected in plants cultivated under n1tornatini; condi-
tions uf lioit and darkneas for a twenty-fc)ur hjur inter-
val, nad it was not observed with constant exposure to
lifjit. A rhythmicity was als.D note(! in the abs~)rption
of the investi(,-Ated ions by the rz):)t system: it was con-
siderably hirher in the daytime than at nif_ht. A study
of the release of ions from the sap als) revealed a daily
rhythm: the sulfate and phisphate coacentration was
hiLher in the daytime, but the concentration of nitrates
was lower than at ni(.ht. Moreover, a rh,,thndeity fir pe-
riods of several hjurs was observed in the absorption of
iona. Alternation of absorption and excretion of a defin-
ite ion by the plant roits is regarded by the authors no
a successive exchange of periods of stimulati3n and sup-
pression in the activity of the roots with a constant irr-
itant. This was confirmed by the presence of pulsation
periods of 15 - 30 minutes ibserved in the deter-Lainatiin

period of infants bor by means of caesarean section
PEDIAT. POL. 1955, 30/5 (Z55-462) Tables 3
The authors have analysed the newborn period of children born by means of caesa-
rean section. The mortality among 402 newborns born alive was 6.4%, while the
total infant mortality In this same period was 2.5%. The mortality of full-term
newborn Infants born by means of caesarean section was 3.11%. and the total morta-
lity of mature infants was 0.6%. Asphyxia was the most frequent cause of death.
572 Z CONV
The mortality was not caused by the operation Itself, but by complications of preg-
nancy and or the delivery which req0tred surgical intervention. Anaesthesia of the
mother caused asphyxia of the newborn in 22.9%; after oxygen-ether anaesthesia it
occurred in 6.1% of the cases. The Influence of caesarean section on the period of
the newborn's adaptation was not observed. Despite immediate section of the um-
bilical cord of these newborns in opposition to what is usually carried out on norm-
ally born children, a higher incidence of icterus neonatorum was not noticed. The
figures were 74% and 80% respectively. Lactation did not differ from lactation
after normal deliveries. Krasucka - Warsaw

TITLE: Thermal conversion of an N-cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulfenamide vul-
Icanization accelerator
SOURCE: Kauchuk i rezina, no. 8, 1965, 9-12
TOPIC TAGS: rubbeAhemical, organic substituted amide, organic sulfu
pound, EPR spectrum, thermochemistry, free radical, vulcanization, reaction
mechanism, heat resistance
ABSTRACT: The effect of rubber mixing and vulcanization temperatures on the
conversion of sulfenamide Ts [Abstractor's note: Compound correspaids to
1"Santocure. 9 and the effect of additives on the thermal stability of this vulcanizaJ
tion accelerator were studied. Heating of the sulfenamide samples at 105-110C
for 2 and 6 hours did not produce significant change in the melting of the material!
except to lower its melting temperature slightly. Thermal decomposition of the L'
sulfenamide at 140 -145 C is preceded by an induction period whose length depends

on the impurities present. Decomposition is accompanied by spontaneous tem- 1
perature increase and evolution of hydrogen sulfide and amine. 2-Mercaptobenzoo-
thiazole, its cyclohexylamine salt, and 2, 21-dibenzothiazyldisulfide were separat.
ed and identified among the resinous decom sition products. The eifects of

adding these three compounds or sulfur to mixes containing the sulfenamide were;
studied. Sulfur had the greatest effect on the thermal stability of the accelerator
at 140-145 C, and the addition of 1% sulfur on weight of the sulfenamide reduced
the induction period from 150 to 10 minutes. Examination F)f EPR spectra esta-
blished that the thermal decomposition of this sulfenamide Lis a radical chain pro-
cess. The presence of benzothiazolesulfide radicals was 1"ndicated. Orig. art.
