TITLE: 'Measurement of the thermal conductivity of ferrites

TEXT: The author evaluates the thermal conductivity X by
m,easuring the thermal diffusion a , using the formula
a = X/sc
in which s isdensity and- c the specific heat. Two equal
assem.blies, each comprising a known standard anil the ferrite
under test, are used. The two assemblies are heated to different
teraperatures, then pressed together to achieve intimate contact
and the change in temperature at the boundary between standard and
ferrite is measured. By specifying the initial. conditions and
using the known formulae for the exponential change of tempera-
ture with time, the author derives an expression for the tempera-.
ture of the boundary and thus also the coefficient of thermal
dif fusion. For the measurement, the author uses a two-tharmistor

bridge, in which the difference in the temperature-resistance slope
of the thermistor is compensated by an ohmic resistance. The
dimensions of the standard (copper) were 60 mm dia., 80 mm long
and the length of the ferrite specimen was 5 min. The temperature
difference of'the two assemblies prior to test was about 15 OC.
In the single experimental example quoted, procisely'the same
thermal-conductivity value was obtained as is published in the
literature. The advantages of the method are: short duration of
the test (2 minutes); only small temperature differences are
needed; the temperature has to be in one place only.

ABSTRACT: The author evaluates theories used an a basis for the analyses of maget-
othermal phenomena. The purpose of the study was to find shortcomings distorting
the objective evaluation of experimental results. Theories of Stoner and Rhodes,
and Teale and Rowlands are deacrLbed, and their limits of validity discussed.
11w_ shortcomings of both methods is that they apply only to magnetic changes due
to reversible processes, but not to changes due to irreversible processes. It
would be an advantage to evaluate individual processes from the point of view
of energy changes characteristic of each process, in direct connection with the
hysteresia.loop. A possible approach is to follow.changes in magnetothermal
phenomena accompanying the movement of Bloch's wall on Si-Fe single crystals in
the,~shape of frames prepared according to Williams; the author is at prevent

ABSTRAM An apparatus for measureme-,t of amdll temperature changes
is described. The usual thermocouplea arc replaced by a thermistor
(0.1 mm in diameter) with a low time constant, connected on a
Wheatscone bridge fed by a circuit of 500 cps a-c. The a-c amplifier
operates at the same frequency. The apparatus has been uned for
measurenents of temperature changes an the order of 10-3C with an

of frangulaemodin in the prc-paration Cholagol, w)ijcjj is
based on Borntraeger's reaction. Analysis Is conducted In
Pulfrich photometer, with 351 filter, in 5-m1 cells. On
the basis of tbe results thus obtained a graph was plotted
showing depencence of extinction on concentration of the

Title Isonerization and Disproportionation of Cresols.

Abstract: The isomrization and the disproportionation of
cresolo in the liquid phase and in the gas phase on
acid catalysts have been investigated. The starting
material used consisted of the m- and p-cresol frac-
tions obtained during the semicoking of brown coal
after renoval of basic and sulfur-containing compounds.
As a result of isomerization the m-cresol content was
found to increase from an initial value of 3% to 60%.

phase experimnts have been carried out using a
variety of oxide catalysts and catalysts containing
fluorine; anong the latter best results were obtained
with A1(13F*)s on J' -A140j, calculated at 24. In
the isomrization experinerts the cresols were diluted
with hydrogen in the ratio 1 : I in order to reduce
carbon deposition on the cataly8ts. The effect of
teaperature was investigated in the range 380-500c
and the space velocity was varied between 15-and
75 mls/hr per liter catalyst. Using pure coppo-
nents (o-, n-, and p-cresol as well as various

xylols) the reactivity of the various isoners was
investigated. The effect of various catalyst poi-
soning agents has also been investigated. Nitrogen-
containing substances (pyridine mid quinoline) in
small amounts have a negative effect on the isomeri-
zation process and in large amounts also inhibit
the disproportionation, process. Sulfur conpo=ds,
on the other hani, inhibit only isomerization
reactions and have no effect on the disproportio-
nation reaction. Apparently the two reactions take
place at different active centers. Values are given
for the equilibrium constants for the isaneerization
and for the disproportionation reactions of all three
cresols. The heats of reactions are also given. --

TEXTt The reaction rate is studied of CH3Dr with pure Big catolyzed with
Cu, in a static installation at 100 - 1,000 mm Hg and 240 - 28000. 'The
results are correlated by means of the relation derived earlier for CH 3Cl.
It was found that the reaction of 08 1 with Sig using a Cu or AS tatalysto
at 280-3500 gives tetraiodoollene instead of methylbromosilane. Apparently
the methylbromosilane which in formed decomposes and the decomposition
products block the active aurface of the contact nasal howevorg it is also
possible that the C11 31 decomposes., The reactions of Cu and AS halides with
Si were also studied. The &uthor considers that the reaction of alkyl

halides with Si takes place during adsorption associated with dissociation,
in which case the alkyl to adsorbed on the copper and the halide on the Si.
Bromine atoms lower the electron density of Si less than chlorine atoms,
which to a great extent promotes substitution of the electrophilie CH group
at the Si, This process agrees with the results of kinetic measurements.
