TITLE: The influence of X-ray irradiation on the funcLion of
the ultraviolet thrombopoetic aerum-factor and the
efficiency of this factor on mice

TEXT: The aim of this work was to obtain better knowledge of
the role of the human thrombopoetic serum-factor by means of U,V.
thrombocytosis in mice. It was found that a humoral factor ir res-
pon6ible for the thrombocytosis caused-by U.V. irraciation. The
influebce of a dose of 300 r X-ray irradiation on the whole U.N.
thrombopoetic serum-factor and on its formation was exLmined in
detail. The action of the U.V. thrombopoetic serum-factor on the
number of1hrombocytos in the recipient mice after X-ray treatment
was also investigated. On the babis of these results it seems
probable that the formation Bite of the factor responsible for

tiscues, which are sensitive to X-ray irrEdiation. The factor -

Ab5tract: [Authors' English summary modified) After administration of
a single dose of 550 r, longer survival was observed In mice which
received thrombopoietic human serum before irradiation. The 95 per
cent death rate of the controls which received normal serum showed a
reduction to 68 per cent while the length of survival was also in-
creased. The mean of the thrombocyte values determined at various
intervals was twice as high In the treated as in the control animals.

ABSTRACT: Obtained by agar gel diffusion and separation with Rivanol, the fractions
of three patient sera with thrombopo';.etic activity and two normal sera have been.
studied with regard to their effect !)n the circulating thrombocyte count in mice.
According to the literature and our ;)wn exploratory data, the supernatant liquid
obtained by Rivanol separation contained only one immune electrophoretically
homogeneous P globulin, transferrin, in addition to gamma globulin. The whole
serum of the patients, the 0 globulins as well as the Rivanol-supernatant liquids
and the majority of the P globulins --tere moderately or pronouncedly positive in
the mouse test, that is, they enhanc-.-)d thrambocyt051S. This can be considered a
renewed indication of a relationship between the humoral regulation of erythropoiesis.

Abstract,: [Authors' Hungarian summarY3 The experimental studies of thrombo-
cytopoiesis were lacking in a method suitable for the quantitative determina-
tion of bone-marrow mer,akaryocytes in mice. The few methods described in the
literature were found un5ultable in mice (!xperiments. A method is described
which, according to the experiences gained so far, provideb satisfactory
information concerning the metrakaryocyte content of the mouse frmur and the
results obtained are reproducible. The renults are reported in terms of a
so-called megakaryocyte Index. The method appear3 to be suited to provide
information about changes in the megakar*y,)CY-te 3tOCk of the bone marrow in
case of changes in the thrombocyte count .?ffected or developed by various

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summaryl Following UV irradiation, thrombocytosis
of several days' duration develops in mice. Ar. increase in the number of
merakaryocytes in the spleen may be responsible for the increase in the num-
ber of thrombocy-tes in the circulation; the number of lienal megakaryocytes
is significantly elevated on the 2nd and 3rd cayaafter the treatment. The
number of giant cells in the bone marrow remains unchanged. In the post-
hemorrhagic thrombocytosis of mice, the mega4ryocytes of the bone marrow
are also increased in number. It is probable that the thrombocytoses developed
in response to different influences are based on different , echanisms. 6

ABSTRACT: The effect of temperature on the evaporation of water across themono-
layer was studied by the Lanomiir-Schaefer siethod in the 12-60 degree interval
using samples of regular and of reorystalliied 1-hexadecanol. The apparent regu-
lar and irregular charatter of the permeaWl.ity was explained by the transition
of the hexadecanol between the Bet* and the sub Alpha phases, whareby Interaction
with water is increased. The OH-group is mfterged and spreading of the none
layer is facilitated; recrystallitation cau:ses phase transition at 1ra6r tempera-
turo. The strength of the interaction botwiten adjacent monolayer molecules, and
the interaction of the monolayer with water, and its spreading properties jointly
determine the height of the energy barrier. The necessary orderlinoss of the mono-
layer can be obtained for instance with the aid of plasticizers which can orient

Abstract [English summary modifiedl: Report on 53 resections of the
superficial rrajor petrosal nerve for headache, including that done in
15 patients with ozena, over the course of the last 3 years. In 9 of
the patientsp the resection was bilateral. A study on the anatomy of
the temporal bona was done in 150 cadavers, listing the data on the
various rossible anomalies In the area and the general incidence in the
300 bones. There were no adverse effects from the surgery and in most
of the cases the results were exceedingly good, even to the extent of
the essentially complete cure of both nostrils when only a unilateral
operation -was done. 2 photomicrographs, 2 surgical diagrams; 13 Western
and 6 Yugloslav and I Soviet reference; manuscript received 24 December
1965.
